Introduction to Criminal Libel and the Duty of Juries by Jon Roland I was delighted to discover on a library shelf a facsimile reprint of the three essays, two by Joseph Towers, from 1764 and 1784, and one by Francis Maseres, from 1792, on the duty of juries in criminal libel trials, but this small collection lacked a proper title, any indication of an editor, or an introduction, so I felt the need to provide these when I rendered the collection for publication online. For the most part these essays speak for themselves, and present what might be termed the Camdenian doctrine of jury process, named for Lord Camden, as opposed to the Mansfieldian doctrine, named for Lord Mansfield. At the time of the American Founding, the prevailing doctrine in the United States was Camdenian, and that is the doctrine of interpretation that must therefore be considered authoritative in interpreting the Constitution of 1787 and the Bill of Rights of 1792 with regard to juries and due process. In the United States today we do not have laws making "libel" a crime, and higher standards for proving libel when the plaintiff is a public official or other public person, but the history of the United States does not lack for other ways of attempting to do the same thing. Beginning with the Sedition Acts of 1798, through those of 1917, to those which are still on the books today, to charges of "conspiracy", "terrorism", or simply "contempt of court" for failing to disclose sources of journalistic investigators, in the Age of the Internet when arguably everybody is a journalist, raise the same general kinds of issues discussed in these essays by Towers and Maseres. The names change but the issues endure.

    Cambridge
    The University of Cambridge
Dates from before 1209 when a group of students left Oxford after a riot and went to Cambridge. The first recorded Chancellor was elected by 1246. Town and gown riots occurred in Cambridge as well and in 1381 all the university records were publicly burned, resulting in considerable obscurity about the early history of the university. The Cambridge system has undergone many changes, but from 1747-1748 until 1910 there was an extended examination, called the Tripos, and the top students were ranked in order as senior wrangler, second wrangler, .... The total numbers of students with mathematical honours for 1747/48 to 1899 areTrinity 5948; St. John's 4224; Gonville and Caius 1533; with the other colleges trailing behind. By the early 20C, the Tripos system was replaced by unordered results within classes, like most other English universities.

Paris. 1744. Two volumes. Title-leaf, xvi,370pp. plus folding map; title-leaf, 400pp. (misnumbered 360) plus folding map. 12mo. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt, leather labels. Slight wear at head of spine of second volume, but a superb set. This travel narrative is now believed to be an imaginary voyage, since no such person as Capt. Robert Lade can be traced. The title asserts this to be translated from an equally imaginary British edition, and it is probable that it is a fictional account written by the supposed translator, the Abbé Antoine François Prévost. Prévost is best known for his massive compilation of voyages issued from 1746 to 1789 in twenty volumes, so his command of travel literature of the period was certainly vast, and he probably drew on reliable sources. The Lade narrative contains a long account of affairs in the infant colony of Georgia, founded only a decade earlier, evidently drawn from British sources. CLARK I:110. AN ENDURING MYTH N. KOLLERSTROM British Journal for History of Science,1992, 25, 347-54 (I) -2y-5 = 0, as the example given in De analysi, he started with the approximate solution of 2. Let the exact solution be 2+p, where p is small, and substitute 2+p into the equation in place of y. This generates a new cubic equation, namely p +10p = 1. As p is small, its powers are ignored, yielding the approximate solution 10p = 1 or p = 0.1. Next, 0.1+q is inserted in place of p to form another new equation, and so on. This is continued to achieve any desired level of accuracy. Raphson presented his method as follows. Taking as an example the equation ba - aaa = c (which we would write as a - ba + c = 0), let an approximate solution be g. Then, if a more accurate solution is g+x, X = (c+ggg-bg) / (b-3gg) The quotient expression was obtained by a two-step procedure (13). In the above example, one substituted (g + x) for a, then expanded the power terms to give a larger equation; this was a straightforward binomial expansion. The second step was to extract the terms in x: the terms which multiplied x in this example were (b-3gg), and these became the quotient. Iterating this procedure, Raphson explained, would give any desired level of accuracy. He elaborated his method only within the context of polynomial equations, without attempting to deal with reciprocal or square root functions. His worked examples contained terms up to the seventh power.
