Rare Books at the University of Michigan
The University of Michigan Library started with 3707 volumes (purchased for $5000), including Audubon's "The Birds of America" (1827-38). It offered little mathematics and grew slowly. A major improvement came in 1881 when a complete run of Crelle's Journal was donated. Two faculty made important contributions to the mathematics collection. Alexander Ziwet, who was on the faculty from 1898 to 1925, worked to improve the library and contributed a large collection of his own books. Louis C. Karpinski, on the faculty from 1904 to 1948, gathered many rare volumes for the mathematics collection. Another important influence occurred in 1964 when Mathematical Reviews moved to Ann Arbor. Today the mathematics collection at the University of Michigan is one of the best in the world. The collection of rare mathematics books is outstanding. The titles listed below in chronological order were selected by V. Frederick Rickey, of Bowling Green State University, to show to a history of mathematics course taught at Michigan State University by Dan Chazan on March 11, 1996. We would like to thank Peggy Daub, Head of Special Collections and curator of the mathematics collection at the library for her assistance.

This is the 11th of several transcriptions of short biographies of
Huguenots who went England and Ireland before 1868. Thanks for the direct
response from the list members. I will transcribe and post additional names
as time permits. There are about 400 of these short biographies in the book.
I apologize that I do not have time to do lookups.

History of Actuarial Science
10 Volume Set Edited by Steven Haberman and Trevor A Sibbett The History of Actuarial Science is the first collection of its kind. This edition covers the key period in the history of actuarial science from the mid-seventeenth century to the early nineteenth century. It gives an essential insight into how actuarial principles have developed throughout history. In 110 texts, the most important progressions in actuarial thought are preserved, with scholarly annotation placing the pieces in historical context. Trevor Sibbett and Steven Haberman, with the support of the Institute of Actuaries have compiled the most significant pamphlets from the year 220 to those written in the early twentieth century.

http://www.philosophy.ubc.ca/ed/
Enlightenment and Dissent was founded in 1982 as the successor to the Price-Priestley Newsletter. The latter was concerned with the Rational Dissent in late eighteenth-century England; Enlightenment and Dissent set out to broaden its scope within the area of what can be described as the English Enlightenment. It has published articles on major as well as neglected figures. Articles published since 1982 have ranged from John Locke, Mathew Tindal, Samuel Clarke (special number), Henry Grove, Edmund Law, William Chambers, David Hartley, William Paley, Richard Price, Joseph Priestley, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Hays, William Godwin, Francis Maseres, Joseph Towers, Sir William Jones, David Williams, John Thelwall and Jeremy Bentham. Reviewing the journal in the Times Literary Supplement in the 1980s, Roy Porter concluded: Whether such a beast as the English Enlightenment ever existed is still a bone of contention. This admirable journal is helping to settle the question in the affirmative. The co-editors of the journal are Martin Fitzpatrick and James Dybikowski. D. O. Thomas is editor emeritus.

Report on Reconciling French and British laws In 1763 France ceded its Canadian colonial holdings, called New France, to Britain. These territories were home to about 65,000 French settlers, many of whom resented British authority. Their hostility presented a serious challenge to British rule in Canada. In 1768 Francis Maseres, the attorney general of Qu©bec, wrote this report suggesting different strategies for combining French and British laws in the colony. He described four approaches, from leaving French laws intact to developing an entirely new legal code. Britain, in an effort to garner more support from the French settlers, adopted the 1774 Qu©bec Act, which incorporated some of Maseres's suggestions. Want more Encarta?
