Grigory Margulis Gregori Aleksandrovich Margulis (first name often given as Gregory Grigori or Grigory ) (born February 24 ) is a mathematician known for his far-reaching work on lattices in Lie groups , and the introduction of methods from ergodic theory into diophantine approximation . He was awarded a Fields Medal in and a Wolf Prize in (joining six mathematicians, up to 2004, who had received both prizes). He was born into a Jewish family in Moscow USSR . He studied at Moscow State University , starting research in ergodic theory. Early work with David Kazhdan produced the Kazhdan-Margulis theorem , a basic result on discrete groups . His superrigidity theorem from clarified a whole area of classical conjectures about the characterisation of arithmetic groups amongst lattices in Lie groups. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1978, but was not permitted to travel to Helsinki to accept in person. His position improved, and he visited Bonn , and was later able to travel freely, though he still worked in a technical institute rather than a mathematics department. In he took a professorial position at Yale University . In , Margulis completed the proof of the Oppenheim conjecture on quadratic forms and diophantine approximation. Como ocurre con los Premios Nobel, representa para los galardonados el pasar a la Historia de la Ciencia. Fields Procede el nombre de John Charles Fields (1863-1932), que en 1924 Presidió el Congreso Internacional de Matemáticas, en el cual se hizo la propuesta de concesión a los descubrimientos matemáticos más destacados. Se otorga el premio cada 4 años, y en total pueden recibir la medalla Fields hasta seis matemáticos en cada edición del mismo. Los galardonados han de ser menores de 40 años de edad. Aunque en algunas ocasiones se han concedido hasta un total de cuatro medallas Fields, en la última ocasión, agosto de 2002, solo han sido premiados dos de los posibles candidatos de todo el mundo. A Word about The Fields Medal The Fields Medal is the highest scientific award for mathematicians and is presented every four years at the International Congress of Mathematicians. The mathematical equivalent in prestige to the Nobel Prize (there is no Nobel Prize in mathematics), it is awarded by a committee appointed by the International Mathematical Union every four years to one or more outstanding researchers. "Fields Medals" are offïcially called "International medals for outstanding discoveries in mathematics." The Fields Medal were first proposed at the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto. Professor J.C. Fields, a Canadian mathematician who was secretary of the 1924 Congress, later donated funds establishing the medals which were then named in his honor. To encourage mathematical endeavor and encourage the field of mathematics, recipients must not be over 40 years of age in the year of the Congress. In 1966, it was agreed that in light of the great expansion of mathematical research, up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress. The inscription on the tablet reads: CONGREGATI EX TOTO ORBE MATHEMATICI OB SCRIPTA INSIGNIA TRIBUERE The translation means: "The mathematicians having congregated from the whole world awarded (this medal) because of outstanding written contributions." This year the International Conference of Mathematicians will announce two Fields Medals in the presence of 5000 mathematicians in Beijing, China on August 20, 2002.
