Although slide rules existed before Mannheim's time, invented by Oughtred and Gunter and others, it was Mannheim who standardised the modern version of the slide rule which was in common use until pocket calculators took over a few years ago. It was while he was a student at Metz that the ideas for this slide rule came to Mannheim. After graduating from the École d'Application in Metz, Mannheim became an officer of the French artillery. After several years in the military, Mannheim was appointed to the École Polytechnique in Paris, while continuing his army career. His first appointment at the École Polytechnique was as a répétiteur in 1859, then in 1863 he was appointed as an examiner. In the following year Mannheim was appointed as Professor of Descriptive Geometry at the École Polytechnique. Koppelman writes in [1]:- He was a dedicated and popular teacher, strongly devoted to the École Polytechnique, and was one of the founders of the Société Amicale des Anciens Elèves de l'École.

Leonardo da Vinci conceived the first mechanical calculator. Napier's bones " invented by John Napier for multiplication, based on the ancient numerical scheme known as the Arabian lattice.
William Gunter
developed a logarithmic rule for multiplication and division using dividers, which was the forerunner of the slide rule.
William Oughtred
invented the circular slide rule, and in 1633 described the rectilinear version. Blaise Pascal started to develop a mechanical calculator - the Pascaline. Capable of addition, subtraction was performed by nines-complement addition, and multiplication was performed by repeated additions and subtractions. It had shortcomings and failed to sell.
Gottfried Leibniz
constructed the first calculator capable of multiplication and division. He Developed the Stepped Reckoner using stepped gear wheels. Performed the 4 functions, but worked erratically due to an error in the carry mechanism, none sold.
1820 - Charles Xavier Thomas's Arithmometer Charles Babbage conceived the original Difference Engine.

Introduction to the Slide Rule
The words "slide rule" may conjure up images of overwhelming complexity and technical detail for you, but the underlying concept is actually quite straightforward. At its heart, the slide rule is nothing more than a simple and elegant solution for solving basic mathematical calculations. What I'll attempt to do on this page is to explain where the slide rule came from, and how it works. Don't worry about all that intimidating detail you see on the face of a slide rule ... you'll quickly see that it is actually quite simple to understand and use (or, in the words of Douglas Adams, DON'T PANIC!). Although the slide rule goes by many names (sliderule, slide ruler, slipstick, etc.) and comes in many forms (linear, circular, cylindrical, etc.), the background presented below applies equally well to all makes and models. If you want to skip the theory, and proceed directly to how to use a slide rule, see my How to Use a Slide Rule page for some downloadable manuals. You might also want to check out the various types of rules and the meanings of common scales listed on my Slide Rule Scales page. Incidentally, all the sources for the historical background presented here can be found in the Further Reading section at the bottom of this page.

And until well into the 20th century companies used this method for transmitting information. These perforated tapes, or punch tapes, will also be adopted for the output of computer. The teletype (telex) terminals accepted only this kind of tape and were the sole way to communicate with computers. Thus data the punched tape will be used for the decades to come in dataprocessing.
