Many standards of quality and reliability exist. The most common standards that US students are likely to encounter are those established by ANSI. ANSI standards cover such topics as quality management and quality assurance standards; design, development, production, installation, and servicing; and inspection and testing.

Benoit
Mandelbrot
IBM Watson, Yale University
The most important mathematician of the last century, the creator of fractal geometry.
He was largely self-taught, allowing him to think in unconventional ways and develop a highly geometrical approach to mathematics. In 1958, Mandelbrot joined IBM, delving into processes with unusual statistical properties and geometric features. This led to his famous contributions in fractal geometry.
The concept has found applications in such diverse fields as physics, economics, the earth sciences and linguistics. The colorful symmetry of computer- generated fractal graphs has captured the imagination of artists, scientists and the public.

Benoit Mandelbrot
New Scientists has an interview with Benoit Mandelbrot , the mathematician who coined the term fractal and indirectly turned on the public to self-similarity and chaos theory in nature. He turns 80 next week. What is it like seeing the Mandelbrot set emblazoned on T-shirts and posters?
I'm delighted. I always felt that science as the preserve of people from Oxbridge or Ivy League universities - and not for the common mortal - was a very bad idea.
Even though most people view it as a beautiful image and ignore the underlying mathematics?
That's right. Yet there is nothing more to this than a simple iterative formula. It is so simple that most children can program their home computers to produce the Mandelbrot set. Link

    The Mandelbrot Set and Beyond
Mandelbrot, Benoit EUR 49.95 @ISBN 0-387-20158-0 It has only been a couple of decades since Benoit Mandelbrot published his famous picture of what is now called the Mandelbrot set. That picture, now seeming graphically primitive, has changed our view of the mathematical and physical universe. The properties and circumstances of the discovery of the Mandelbrot Set continue to generate much interest in the research community and beyond. This book contains the hard-to-obtain original papers, many unpublished illustrations dating back to 1979 and extensive documented historical context showing how Mandelbrot helped change our way of looking at the world. by Dave Snyder
Fractals are a mathematical subject, so a full understanding of fractals requires mathematics. A person can look at a rainbow, a waterfall or a cloud and enjoy the beauty of these objects without understanding the physics behind any of them. And fractals are the same way. However, in my view fractals become even more enjoyable as one understands the mathematics behind them. This is hardly an exhaustive list of reference materials on the subject. A complete literature search for the author Mandelbrot will produce a couple hundred works on a variety of subjects (Mandelbrot was a prolific author). A complete subject search and/or citation search would produce even more. This is an attempt to list a few representative examples of works to show what fractals are and how they apply to specific areas in astronomy, however I have included references on physics as well.
