Keep The Faith

Hope springs from our desires for materialistic things. We feel that only when we acquire the things that we hope for, can we lead a peaceful life. On the contrary, this desire to acquire things results in tensions, bitterness and many disturbances. Is this the legacy we wish to leave behind for the future generations? To ensure that
Living Right

In reality, God is not connected with the happenings of this world it is only the power of God that is connected to the world. It is this power of God that works in silence and causes the emotional and psychic vibrations or physical actions and reactions. God is, in essence, static, and his power moves the world. Similarly, each one of us is inherently static, but the power in us makes us move

Mettagu Manava Puccha
Mettagu's Questions
Translated from the Pali by John D. Ireland For free distribution only The Venerable Mettagu: "I ask the Lord this question, may he tell me the answer to it. I know him to be a master of knowledge and a perfected being. From whence have arisen these many sufferings evident in the world?" The Lord: "You have asked me the source of suffering. Mettagu, I will tell it to you as it has been discerned by me. These many sufferings evident in the world have arisen from worldly attachments. Whoever ignorantly creates an attachment that stupid person comes upon suffering again and again. Therefore a man of understanding should not create attachment, seeing it is the source of suffering." Mettagu: "What I did ask you have explained, now I ask another question. Come tell me this: how do the wise cross the flood, birth and old age, sorrow and grief? Explain it thoroughly to me, O sage, for this Dhamma has been understood [ ] by you." The Lord: "I will set forth the Dhamma, Mettagu, a teaching to be directly perceived, [

Speaks Up
By Manava Samskriti
03 March, 2005
Manava Samskriti B r eaking his silence over two years after stepping down from office, former president K R Narayanan has criticised former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his handling of the post-Godhra situation in Gujarat and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of stalling a second term for him. "He [Vajpayee] did not do anything effective. I had sent him letters. I had talked to him directly," Narayanan said in a freewheeling interview to Congress MLA P T Thomas carried in a recent issue of Malayalam magazine Manava Samskriti. Claiming there was a conspiracy involving the state and central governments behind the 2002 Gujarat riots, he said if the military was given powers to shoot at the perpetrators of violence, recurrence of violence in Gujarat could have been prevented. "I had asked military to be sent to suppress the riots. The Centre had the constitutional responsibility and powers to send military if the state government asked. The military was sent. But if the military was given powers to shoot at the perpetrators of violence, recurrence of tragedies in Gujarat could have been avoided. However, both the state and central government did not do so," Narayanan said.

http://www.bharatavarsha.com/iyer/gotra/kaushika.html
THE KAUSHIKAs The kaushika (descendents of the influential kushika) include such intellectual giants as vishvAmitra and madhucchandasa. What is arguably the single most important verse in all the vedas - the gAyatri mantra- was composed by vishvAmitra. This set of lineages has kshatriya origins. vishvAmitra himself was a king of some importance during the vedic age. The accounts of his rivalry with vasishTha make up one of the great dramas in the vedas and the post-vedic literature. All the kaushika lineages have come down through vishvAmitra. The vaishvAmitras may be divided into 20 gotra-gaNas as shown below: NOTE: In the table below, the subdivisions of the kaushikas are listed. The name of the gotra is listed in the first column, and the corresponding pravara rshi set is in the second column. Since some of the pravara lineages are specific to the followers of certain sutras, the appropriate sutra is given in the third column. Wherever there are two or more sets of pravara rshis, it should be taken to mean that there are different lineages that correspond to a certain gotra. In general, the set of pravara rshis is a more accurate indicator of a person's descent, than simply the gotra itself. GOTRA PRAVARA RSHIs SUTRA vishvAmitra

THE BHARGAVAs The Bhargavas (descendents of Bhrgu) include such illustrious names like Chyavana, Jamadagni and Parasu-rama (usually referred to as ramo bhargava, or simply as bhargava). The Bhargavas may be divided into the 5 subsets. The first subset may be called simply Bhargava, constituted by 11 gotras. The remaining 4 subsets of the Bhargavas are individual gotras by themselves. Collectively these 4 subsets are called the Kevala Bhargavas. NOTE: In the table below, the subdivisions of the Bhargavas are listed. The name of the gotra is listed in the first column, and the corresponding pravara rshi set is in the second column. Since some of the pravara lineages are specific to the followers of certain sutras, the appropriate sutra is given in the third column. Because of stinginess,
heedlessness, it doesn't shine. With longing it's smeared I tell you. Suffering-stress: Ajita: They flow every which way, the streams. What is their blocking, what their restraint tell me with what are they finally stopped? The Buddha: Whatever streams there are in the world: their blocking is mindfulness, mindfulness is their restraint I tell you with discernment they're finally stopped. Ajita: Tell me, when asked this, where are they brought to a halt? The Buddha: This question you've asked, Ajita, I'll answer it for you are brought to a halt without trace: With the cessation of consciousness they're brought to a halt. I can't venture across
    the great flood.
    Tell me, All-around Eye,
    the support to rely on
    for crossing over this flood.
The Buddha: Mindfully focused on nothingness, [
    relying on `There isn't,'
you should cross over the flood.
    Abandoning sensual pleasures,
abstaining from conversations, keep watch for the ending of Upasiva: One free from passion for all sensual pleasures relying on nothingness, letting go of all else, released in the highest emancipation of perception: Does he stay there unaffected? The Buddha: One free from passion for all sensual pleasures relying on nothingness, letting go of all else, released in the highest emancipation of perception: He stays there unaffected. Upasiva: If he stays there, O All-around Eye, unaffected for many years, right there Would his consciousness be like that? The Buddha: As a flame overthrown by the force of the wind goes to an end that cannot be classified, so the sage free from naming activity goes to an end that cannot be classified.

    Posala's Questions
Posala: To one who reveals the past
    I've come with a question.
I ask the Sakyan about the knowledge [
of one devoid of perception of forms,
who has abandoned all the body,
    How is he
The Buddha: The Tathagata, knowing directly
knows for one stationed in them
Knowing directly the origin of nothingness to be the fetter of delight, one then sees there clearly. That's his genuine knowledge
    Notes
Posala's question concerning the knowledge of the person in the sphere of nothingness has a double meaning: He is asking about the Buddha's knowledge about that person, and also what a person in that sphere of attainment should do to develop his/her knowledge even further. The Buddha's answer deals with the question in both its senses. Go back On the seven stations of consciousness, see
