Étienne-Louis Malus
Étienne-Louis Malus was born in Paris, France and displayed significant ability in mathematics while attending the military engineering school at Mezires. He was dismissed from the establishment, however, without a commission in 1793 on political grounds. Subsequently, Malus entered the French army as a private soldier and eventually gained notice for his skills, which resulted in his superiors selecting him to study at the École Polytechnique. A pupil of Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Fourier, while enrolled at the state supported institution Malus began carrying out research in optics focusing upon the refractive indices of various materials. Once he received his degree, Malus was accepted into the army’s corps of engineers, but remained associated with the École Polytechnique as an examiner. Malus took part in Napoleon’s campaigns in Egypt and Syria in 1798 and did not leave the region until 1801. Although he continued to hold official posts in the military for many years, Malus became increasingly involved in the study of optics following his return from the East. In 1807, he commenced experiments on double refraction , the phenomenon that causes a light beam to divide into two different rays on passing through certain materials, such as Iceland spar. Malus’s findings supported those obtained earlier by Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens, whose description of double refraction was founded upon the then controversial idea that light is characteristically wavelike. In 1808, Malus famously discovered that light could be

In the aftermath of the American and French revolutions, the science of optics experienced its own revolution during the early nineteenth century. Not even a century after the publication of Opticks , English physician and physicist Thomas Young challenged Isaac Newton's corpuscular theory of light. In 1801, Young did an experiment that established the principle of light interference, which could not be explained by a particle theory of light. His experiment allowed light to pass through two closely set pinholes onto a screen where he observed that the beams spread out, or diffracted, and overlapped. In areas where the light beams overlapped, bands of brightness alternated with bands of darkness. Newton's color spectrum went through its own revolution early in the century. In 1802, William Hyde Wollaston discovered seven bands of darkness interrupting what had been presumed to be a continuous range of colors in the solar spectrum. Ten years later, Joseph von Fraunhofer found and measured the positions of over 300 dark lines in the spectrum, establishing the groundwork for a new field of inquiryspectroscopy. At about the same time, William Herschel and Johann W. Ritter discovered that there are regions of the spectrum invisible to the human eye. In 1800, Herschel was studying the relationship between light and heat. Using a prism and thermometer with blackened bulbs (for better heat absorption), he measured the temperature of each color of the sun's spectrum. As a control, he measured the temperature just outside the visible spectrum and, to his surprise, found that a region beyond the red portion of the spectrum had the highest temperature. He had discovered an area of the spectrum that could be measured and felt, but not seenthe infrared region.

To bolster the notion of a dichotomous universe, I have provided examples, such as the discovery of the dual nature of calcium carbonate by Erasmus Bartholinus and Etiene Malus's work on the polarization of light. In 1669, a Dutch physician, Bartholinus (1625-1698), discovered that a crystal of Iceland spar, a transparent form of calcium carbonate, produces a double image (illustrations below-left). Apparently, light passing through the crystal splits into two rays. This simple observation indicates that light has two components and is thus a fundamental facet of wave theory. Together with other observations, it proved that light can appear in two forms Before we can begin implementing the principles of Wave Theory within the basic premises of science, we must grasp one final characteristic of energetic matter: All wave formations are comprised of smaller wave formations. In fact, every quant is a subunit of a larger quant, and is comprised of ever smaller quants (please also see the
