Nicholas Malebranche (1638-1715)
Nicholas Malebranche was one of the principal figures in the development of Cartesianism. He both explicated and defended Descartes, and developed original views which he ably defended in controversy. Besides Descartes, the other great influence on Malbranche was Augustine's Christian Platonism, from which Malbranche drew, among other things, the view that the ideas we immediately perceive are the archetypes in the divine mind. Malebranche engaged in an important controversy with Antoine Arnauld , as well as with other notable philosophical figures including Foucher, Fontenelle, Leibniz , Regis, and Lamay. In Malbranche and British Philosophy Malebranche's most important work De la recherche de la vertie ou l'on traitde la nature, de l'esprit de l'homme et de l'usage qu'il doit faire pour eviter l'erreur dans la science or The Search After Truth, was Cartesian in inspiration and asserted views connected with the mechanical philosophy including the rejection of Scholastic apparatus of substantial forms, real qualities and powers in favor of the doctrine that the behavior of bodies must be explained by the configuration and movement of their parts and the claim that there is nothing in bodies like our ideas of color, taste and smell. Malebranche agreed with Descartes that awareness of mental states is immediate and infallible, perception of bodies is indirect and fallible, and that knowledge of things comes from clear and distinct ideas grasped by reason, and not by sensation or imagination. Malebranche also maintained some specifically Cartesian metaphysical doctrines such as the definition of matter as extension, that animals are machines, and that man has a soul really distinct from his body.

Nicolas Malebranche
Nicholas Malebranche was the most influential and original of the Cartesian philosophers. Deformed and sickly, Malebranche was born in Paris and from his childhood preferred solitude. He studied theology at the Sorbonne, and at age 22 entered the Congregation of the Oratory where he spent the rest of his life in seclusion. He was ordained in 1664 and the same year became acquainted with Descartes' Treatise on Man, an unfinished work which explores the relation between the human mind and body. He subsequently devoted his studies to Cartesian philosophy and science and four years later published his greatest work, The Search After Truth (1674-1675). In response to theological criticisms of this work he soon after published his Treatise of Nature and Grace, which attempts to reconcile God's power, knowledge, and goodness with the evil in the world. This work embroiled him in even more controversy, particularly with French Bishop Jacques Benigne Bossuet and French theologian Antoine Arnauld. Malebranche's other philosophical writings include Dialogues on Metaphysics and on Religion (1688), a work in fourteen dialogs which more informally covers much of the ground in his Search after Truth, and A Treatise of Morality (1683). In 1699 he was elected to the Academie des Sciences for his scientific writings.

Nicolas Malebranche
Philosopher, born Paris, France, 1638; died there, 1715. After joining the Oratory he engaged in church history and scriptural studies till his activities were turned to philosophy by the " Traite de l'homme ," of Descartes. In his " Recherche de la verite " he set forth the fundamentals of his own system, advocating occasionalism, maintaining that sensation and imagination are not produced in us by things but by God. His system, which would seem to lead towards pantheism and make God the author of sin, was attacked by Antoine Arnauld and Bossuet and was held in disfavor at Rome.

Nicolas de Malebranche
Nicolas de Malebranche was born in Paris in 1638. After early studies in his paternal home he studied philosophy in the college of Marche, and theology at the Sorbonne. In 1660 he entered the Oratory, where he came under the strong influence of the thought of St. Augustine which predominated there. But his enthusiasm for Descartes was stronger, and he became an admirer of the father of modern philosophy. He published De la recherche de la verite (On the Search for Truth) in 1674. It was well received, and caused considerable discussion. His other works can be considered as developments of the doctrine of this, his masterpiece. He died in 1715.
On God's Intervention
On Metaphysics
Theotimus: Your reply, Aristes, surprises me extremely. How, knowing all that you are now telling me, could you reply to Theodore that we are united to our body more intimately than to anything else?
Aristes: I did so because one is inclined to say only what is present to the memory, and because abstract truths do not present themselves to the mind so naturally as those that one has heard all one's life. When I have meditated as much as Theotimus I shall speak no more in mechanical fashion, but regulate my words in accordance with the deliverances of inner truth. I understand then now, and I shall not forget it all my life, that we are united immediately and directly to God. It is in the light of His wisdom that He makes us see the magnificence of His works, the model upon which He forms them, the immutable art which regulates their mechanism and movements, and it is through the efficacy of His will that He unites us to our body, and through our body to all those in our environment.

Nicolas Malebranche
Nicolas Malebranche August 6 October 13 ) was a French philosopher of the Cartesian school. The youngest child of Nicolas Malebranche, secretary to King Louis XIII of France , and Catherine de Lauzon, sister of a viceroy of Canada , was born in Paris. Deformed and frail, he received his elementary education from a tutor, and left home only when ready to enter upon a course of philosophy at the College de la Marche, and subsequently to study theology at the Sorbonne . He had resolved to take holy orders, but his academic disposition led him to decline a stall in Notre Dame , and in he joined the congregation of the Oratoire de France. He was first advised to devote himself to ecclesiastical history, and laboriously studied Eusebius of Caesarea Socrates Sozomen and Theodoret , but "the facts refused to arrange themselves in his mind, and mutually effaced one another." Richard Simon attempted unsuccessfully to teach him Hebrew and Biblical criticism .
