Preface to the second edition
This survey was originally written in December 1990, and revised a couple of months later. It was written for the monthly magzine of CFUV-FM in Victoria, BC to be published in conjunction with a cycle of Mahler symphonies which I intended to play on my weekly radio show. The title of the series was 'The Great Mahler Conductors' It was also written at a time of considerable emotional turmoil in my own life: appropriately enough, as Mahler is the composer I tend to turn to most at such times. Since the article was originally written several events have occurred which make we now wish to revise it: firstly the flood of Mahler recordings has hardly abated: Haitink and Tennstedt are on their second cycles, Rattle and Sinopoli continue with theirs, Segerstam and Inouye (and possibly others) have started theirs. Secondly there have been a considerable number of reissues (or first-time isses) of historic Mahler performances by major figures of the recent (and not-so-recent) past. Even though I have continued to acquire Mahler recordings I feel that their sheer volume is beginning to overwhelm me, I have not - and probably never will - have heard all the available recordings of Mahler's works. Considering that only a few years ago I had heard every single recording ever made of the 6th, for example, indeed owned the majority of them, this situation is both rewarding and alarming.

Luciano Berio Biography
see also: http://www.compositiontoday.com/articles/berio.asp
Luciano Berio (October 24, 1925 – May 27, 2003) was an Italian composer. He is noted for his experimental work, particularly in his orchestral work, Sinfonia, and also as a pioneer in electronic music.
Biography
Berio was born in Oneglia. He was taught the piano by his father and grandfather who were both organists. During World War II he was conscripted into the army, but on his first day he injured his hand while learning how a gun worked. He spent time in a military hospital, before fleeing to fight in anti-Nazi groups.
Following the war, Berio studied at the Milan Conservatory under Giulio Cesare Paribeni and Giorgio Ghedini. He was unable to continue studying the piano because of his injured hand, so instead concentrated on composition. In 1947 came the first public performance of one of his works, a suite for piano.

Anton Bruckner
Anton Bruckner, a giant of the 19 th The teaching salaries earned by Bruckner were poor and the work itself a distraction from compositional goals.  But through his skills as a keyboard player, Bruckner found his way to the assistant organist position at St. Florian, where he stayed for ten years, and organist at Linz Cathedral for thirteen more.  The Linz period was vital to his creative life, as he received lessons by mail from Simon Sechter, a Viennese who briefly taught Schubert.  Grueling exams and certifications from the Vienna Conservatory would follow, although Bruckner's musical proficiencies were never in doubt.  Through the encouragement of friends, Bruckner found work in Vienna as theory teacher at the College of St. Anna and as an instrumentalist.  He was also invited to play organ at churches throughout Europe and received wide acclaim. Convinced of his musical future, Bruckner remained in Vienna until his death. His once-peaceful life would become drenched in controversy along the way. Bruckner had written numerous vocal and orchestral pieces for church performance, but his first serious attempts at concert music did not occur until the 1860s, when he began projects under the tutelage of Otto Kitzler.  During his time with this modernist, Bruckner fell under the potent charm of Wagner, whose ultra-chromatic style brought change to the Austrian's own.  Bruckner's church music sat well with audiences, but his symphonies, for which he is best known today, were radical in scope and hostilely received.  He became a personal friend of

Kurt Andersen is author of the novel Turn of the Century, a New York Times Notable Book of 1999 that Times reviewers called "wickedly satirical" and "outrageously funny" and "the most un-clichéd novel imaginable," and that The Wall Street Journal called a "smart, funny and excruciatingly deft portrait of our age." Andersen has adapted the book into a screenplay for a film being developed by the director Curtis Hanson with Village Roadshow Pictures. He is now at work on his second novel.
Kurt Andersen began his career in journalism at Time, where he was an award-winning writer on national affairs and criminal justice, and then for eight years the magazine's architecture and design critic. Returning to Time in 1993 as editor-at-large, he wrote a weekly column on entertainment and media, and from 1996 through 1999 he was a cultural columnist for The New Yorker. His journalism and essays have also appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and Architectural Record, among other publications.
Andersen was a co-founder of Inside.com, and editor-in-chief of both New York and Spy magazines, the latter of which he co-founded. He joined WNYC in 2000 to become host of the weekly arts and cultural magazine, Studio 360.

Modernist Aesthetics and Musicology
Modernism, understood as a broad range of aesthetic and technical features in 19th and early 20th-century music, is an area of research focus within the department. This research engages with the era's characteristic preoccupations, reflected in the aesthetic categories of fragment, originality, desire and subjective identity, the sublime, and the melancholic. It is also focussed on Modernist obsessions with the new, with conflicts of order and chaos, and subjective anxieties in an age of political upheaval, technological advance and cultural crisis. This research engages with and develops central methods in historical and critical musicology and music analysis. In many areas the research in the department also applies an interdisciplinary approach, drawing, for example, upon hermeneutics, philosophy, psychoanalysis and cultural theory. Dr Stephen Downes is working on a monograph exploring musical constructions of creativity, inspiration and eroticism in aesthetic contexts from Romantic idealism to Modernist anxiety. He also researches into musical expressions of subjective identity in central/eastern europe , involving gender, nationalism and ethnicity, and has lectured and published on these issues in Poland . The primarily focus is on the music of Karol Szymanowski - his monograph

The Chamber Music Society of Minnesota presents the Midwest premiere of Camp Songs five poems from the Holocaust set to music. Many people might imagine music inspired by the Holocaust to be mournful, respectful of the dead. But what sets these songs apart is their bitter defiance and humor in the face of war and death.
"I was very taken with the movie The Producers when it first came out," says Schoenfield. "It was one of the best protests to God about the Holocaust I'd ever heard. And Kulisiewicz had the same idea with these biting poems they show such dignity and such strength."
