Biographical memoirs
Kurt Mahler 1903-1988 By J.H. Coates and A.J. van der Poorten This memoir was originally published in Historical Records of Australian Science , vol.9, no.4, 1990. It was also published in Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society of London Kurt Mahler was born on 26 July 1903 at Krefeld am Rhein in Germany; he died in his 85th year on 26 February 1988 in Canberra, Australia. From 1933 onwards most of his life was spent outside of Germany, but his mathematical roots remained in the great school of mathematics that existed in Germany between the two world wars. Above all Mahler lived for mathematics; he took great pleasure in lecturing, researching and writing. It was no surprise that he remained active in research until the last days of his life. He was never a narrow specialist and had a remarkably broad and thorough knowledge of large parts of current and past mathematical research. At the same time he was oblivious to mathematical fashion, and very much followed his own path through the world of mathematics, uncovering new and simple ideas in many directions. In this way he made major contributions to transcendental number theory, diophantine approximation, p -adic analysis, and the geometry of numbers. Towards the end of his life, Kurt Mahler wrote a considerable amount about his own experiences; see 'Fifty years as a mathematician', 'How I became a mathematician', 'Warum ich eine besondere Vorliebe fur die Mathematik habe', 'Fifty years as a mathematician II'. There is also a recent excellent account of his life and work by Cassels (J.W.S. Cassels, 1991, 'Obituary of Kurt Mahler'

FAQ Reviews Lyrics ... TweeNet information about all the bands on the CD La Buena Vida - Tardes de Cafe The fabulous Stamp fanzine introduced me to Spainish pop in the late eighties. The excellent Rutland Records tape compilation had a great song by this Spanish band "Aventuras De Kirlian" which I fell in love with right away. Some years later the new Spanish label Siesta Records released a fantastic 7" by La Buena Vida, the follow up to "Aventuras De Kirlian". I had just released the International Pop 7" and was planning a second one, so I asked them for a song. The first time I've heard "Tardes de Cafe" was at my friend Keith's house in Rhode Island in September 1993, since then it waited to be released. the song:

Kurt Mahler contracted tuberculosis at the age of five years which affected his right knee. Because of these health problems he attended school for only four years leaving in 1917 at the age of 13. In 1918 he took a job in a factory but attended technical schools to learn to become an instrument maker. He was self-taught in mathematics teaching himself while working in the factory, reading works by Edmund Landau Knopp Klein and Hilbert among others. His father sent small articles his son had written to Klein who passed them to Siegel Siegel arranged for him to attend Frankfurt University which he entered in 1923. There he attended lectures by Dehn on topology Hellinger on elliptic functions Siegel on calculus and Emmy Noether Courant Landau Born ... Hilbert and Ostrowski and acted as unpaid assistant to Norbert Wiener . It was through Emmy Noether that he learnt about p-adic numbers which were to be one of the major topics of his research throughout his life. In 1927 he submitted his doctoral dissertation on zeros of the
