In particular, it is concerned with "counting" the objects in those collections ( enumerative combinatorics ) and with deciding whether certain "optimal" objects exist ( extremal combinatorics ) and which " algebraic " structures these objects have ( algebraic combinatorics An example of a combinatorial question is the following: What is the number of possible orderings of a deck of 52 playing cards? 24 Colour Triangles
  • The triangles must be fitted such that meeting edges have the same colour, and The entire border of the shape has only one colour.
  • One of the greatest investigators into the triangles is Wade E. Philpott, whose puzzles and solutions were published in Martin Gardner’s Mathematical Games column and later in his book, Mathematical Magic Show The number of ways the triangles can be fitted into a parallelogram with dimensions 3x4 is also not known, but Philpott believes it is less than that of the hexagon. Again, six solutions are found, each also having three smaller hexagons of one colour each within it. He also invented many other puzzles, such as the "duplication problem", which is to form two identical symmetrical shapes that meet the two conditions set by MacMahon and with borders of different colours. There are 28 shapes known to be solvable. The "triplication problem" is similar, but three shapes have to be made instead of two. It has been proved that only ten symmetrical shapes are solvable. These are shown below, with a solution for one of them.

The Reading Group brings together about a dozen individuals interested in the history of mathematics from the Cincinnati tri-state area twice a year to read original source materials in mathematics. The organization was (cleverly) named after the French Scholastic philosopher Nicole Oresme (1323-1382) whose "latitude of forms" constituted early graphical representations of mathematical functions, long before Descartes. The Reading Group was inspired by the experience the organizers shared during the summers of 1995-1997 at the Institute on the History of Mathematics and its Use in Teaching held at American University (Washington, DC), and was established under the guidance of Fred Rickey, one of the organizers of the Institute and an erstwhile Ohioan.

    http://www.math.columbia.edu/~ums/abstracts/Sp05Haque.html
The Omega Transform and Generating Functions Mohammad Moinul Haque, February 15, 2005 The Omega Transform is a powerful tool from Partition Analysis. First developed by Major Percy MacMahon in the early 20th century to solve problems in partition theory by computing their generating functions, understanding and making use of this transform has in fact become a somewhat current field of research in this part of mathematics. I will discuss what this transform is and give examples of where it is useful. In particular, in the last part of the talk I will discuss how I used this tool to solve combinatorial problems arising from arithmetic algebraic geometry as part of Prof. Glass' group in the Columbia Summer Research Program.

    The Hoffman-Singleton Game
Ed Pegg Jr., November 1, 2004 The Game of Set works on 3 colors, 3 numbers, 3 shadings, and 3 symbols. Mathematically, 3 = 81 cards is nice, but may be too many cards. A deck of double-9 domino cards , by me. A card set based on a larger Venn diagram might be nice. I haven't really looked at the game possibilities. Here is the order-5 Venn diagram.
Figure 1. An order-5 Venn diagram. Originally by Branko Grunbaum. See Frank Ruskey's survey. Polyforms (especially hexominoes and octiamonds), make interesting sets. They don't work well as cards, though. In the various games played with Octiamonds, for example, the shapes of the pieces is more important than anything. The edgematching sets developed in 1926 by Percy MacMahon all work well. Path cards, such as in Kaliko Tantrix , and the 36 path dominoes also make nice games. Unfortunately for both of these, squares, hexagons, and triangles all work better as tiles. The 4 LONGEST LOOPS
