It was probably edited by Patrick Murdoch, who had edited Maclaurin’s other important posthumous work, the Account of Sir Isaac Newton’s philosophical discoveries published in the same year. At least part had been written in 1726 for Maclaurin’s lectures as Professor of Mathematics at Edinburgh University.

    Colin Maclaurin
    Professor Colin Maclaurin
Mathematician. Born in Glendaruel (Argyll), where his father was a noted minister of Kilmodan Parish Church, who had translated the psalms into Gaelic. Maclaurin entered at the University of Glasgow the at the age of 11 and, at 15, he gave a remarkable public defence of his thesis on the power of gravity. In 1718, at the age of only 19, he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the Marischal College, Aberdeen. Somewhat to the annoyance of the University authorities, Maclaurin seems to have left to undertake a 'grand tour' of Europe, as was the fashion of the time. In 1725, Maclaurin was appointed to a Chair of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh, to assist the aged James Gregory - a nephew of the more famous James Gregory (1638-75). Maclaurin had been recommended by Sir Isaac Newton, who was so impressed by the young mathematician he offered to pay Maclaurin's salary.
Maclaurin's is best remembered for Geometrica Organica (1720), his

How to get to the Colin MacLaurin Building
In case you are a little confused about where this is... The most familiar place to start is the crush area (outside 1.83) in the Earl Mountbatten building (houses computer science and others). Walk towards the computer scence office (room 1.24 - the one with lots of glass to speak through!). Keep walking past this, through the double doors at the end. You are now about to walk into the Colin MacLaurin building. There are stairs on your right, should you need them! Depending on the floor, room numbers start with a different letter:
    • Ground Floor: G First Floor: F Second Floor: S Third Floor: T
You can also get in directly from outside by walking up Gait 1 (all car parks on one side). The entrance is the large, two storey glass section.

    http://www.jim-mclaren.co.uk/colin_mclaren.htm
In 1745, having been very active in making plans, and superintending the operations necessary for the defence of the city of Edinburgh against the Highland army, Mr. MacLaurin was, upon their entering the city, obliged to withdraw to the north of England, when he was invited by the archbishop of York to reside with him. On his journey southward he had a fall from his horse, and the fatigue, anxiety, and cold to which he was exposed on this occasion, laid the foundation of a dropsy, of which he died soon after his return to Edinburgh, June 14, 1746. His portrait, from an engraving in Smiths Iconographia Scotica, is subjoined.
Below is the inscription on one of a group of seven or eight commemorative tablets high up on the outside wall at the south-west corner of Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. Text and translation kindly provided by Mr. Bert Hutchings. To visit the Kirk web-site please follow this Greyfriars link “Infra situs est COLIN MACLAURIN Mathes. olim in Acad. Edin. Prof. Electus ipso Newtono suadente. H.L.P.F. Non ut nomini paterno consulat Nam tali auxilio nil eget. Sed ut in hoc infelici campo Ubi Luctus regnant et Pavor Mortalibus prorsus non absit Solatium: Huius enim scripta evolve Mentemque tantarum rerum capacem Corpori caduco superstitem crede.” “Beneath here lies COLIN MACLAURIN, formerly Professor of Mathematics in the University of Edinburgh, having been elected on the advice of Newton himself. This stone was erected by his son, not that he might provide for his father’s reputation, which stands in no need of such aid, but that mortals might not be altogether without consolation in this sad place, where grief and fear hold sway; for you have but to examine his writings, and you must believe that a mind capable of such lofty efforts must survive the frail body.”

    Maclaurin, Colin
Skotský matematik, který se stal následovníkem Newtona . Jako první publikoval systematické formulace Newtonových metod v díle A Treatise of Fluxions z roku 1742.

SIMSON, Robert. Volume of holograph letters on mathematical topics between Robert Simson.and Matthew Stewart. [1741-1755] MS Gen 146 After graduating at Glasgow University in 1711, Robert Simson spent a year in London where he met several eminent mathematicians, amongst them Edward Halley. It was the latter's influence that tended to confirm Simson's interest in the writings of the Greek mathematicians. In 1712 Simson returned to Glasgow as Professor of Mathematics. The rest of his life was spent in teaching and in research on the early Greek mathematicians - he published important works on Euclid, Pappus of Alexandria and Apollonius of Perga. This correspondence between Simson and Matthew Stewart (Professor of Mathematics at Edinburgh) was published in The proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society , vol. XXI, session 1902-1903.
