La scomparsa di Mac Lane Lo scorso 14 aprile, in una casa di riposo di San Francisco  morto Saunders Mac Lane. Aveva 95 anni. Nato a Norwich, nello stato del Connecticut, il 4 agosto del 1909, Saunders Mac Lane compie gli studi universitari a Yale e a Chicago. Studia con Eliakim Moore e, su suo suggerimento, per il dottorato si trasferisce a Gšttingen, dove soggiorna dal 1931 al 1933. In quegli anni lÕUniversitˆ di Gšttingen annovera fra i suoi docenti David Hilbert, Emmy Noether, Hermann Weyl, Paul Bernays. A Gšttingen consegue il dottorato nel 1934, con una tesi dÕargomento logico, sotto la guida di Weyl e Bernays, ma con lÕavvento dei nazisti al potere si vede costretto a lasciare la Germania prima possibile e a rientrare negli Stati Uniti. Dopo aver ottenuto incarichi di insegnamento alle Universitˆ di Harvard, Cornell e Chicago, a partire dal 1947 Mac Lane  professore presso il Dipartimento di Matematica dellÕUniversitˆ di Chicago, dalla quale nel 1982 riceve il titolo di Professore Emerito. (Per dare unÕidea del suo impegno sul difficile fronte che intercorre fra didattica e ricerca, basti dire che  stato relatore di ben 39 tesi di dottorato in matematica.) Sono pi di un centinaio i lavori di ricerca dei quali Mac Lane  autore o coautore. Ha pubblicato sei volumi, alcuni dei quali sono diventati, da subito, testi Òdi riferimentoÓ, altri lo avrebbero meritato. In ordine cronologico:
