Consequently, Mac Lane titled his introductory book to the field Categories for the Working Mathematician Mac Lane also steered national science and mathematics policy through his work on numerous boards, and guided dozens of students to mathematical careers. In the support of scientific research, Mac Lane served as vice president of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, and as president of the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society. As president of the Mathematical Association of America in the 1950s, he began the first activity of that organization toward improvement in the teaching of modern mathematics. SAUNDERS MAC LANE, 95
University of Chicago mathematician helped introduce key concepts to field

Russell Working, Tribune staff reporter.
From the time his daughter was about 5, University of Chicago mathematician Saunders Mac Lane used to take her for walks in the city or hikes in the woods, pointing out landmarks along the way. As they returned, he would ask her to guide them back, Gretchen MacLane recalled. He wanted her and her sister to know how to find their way through memory and logic. Dr. Mac Lane, 95, called one of the most influential 20th Century American mathematicians, died of constrictive heart disease Thursday, April 14, in a hospice near San Francisco. A formal man who wore a hat and tie even while relaxing at home, he made a lasting impact on his field during his career, which extended into his 90s. In 1945, Dr. Mac Lane co-wrote a paper that introduced concepts such as "category theory," which deals in an abstract way with mathematical structures and relationships between them. "There are some ideas you simply could not think without a vocabulary to think them," said J. Peter May, a professor of mathematics at U. of C. "And the language that they introduced made huge swaths of modern mathematics possible."

18: Category theory, homological algebra
Introduction
Category theory, a comparatively new field of mathematics, provides a universal framework for discussing fields of algebra and geometry. While the general theory and certain types of categories have attracted considerable interest, the area of homological algebra has proved most fruitful in areas of ring theory, group theory, and algebraic topology.
History
A survey article which discusses the roles of categories and topoi in twentieth-century mathematics.
Applications and related fields
The word "category" is used to mean something completely different in general topology

MacLane, Sinaiko awarded for outstanding contributions to students' lives on campus
Saunders MacLane Their purpose is to recognize emeritus or very senior faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to teaching and to the experience of student life on campus. This year's awards will be given to Saunders MacLane (A.M., '31), the Max Mason Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in Mathematics, and Herman Sinaiko (A.B., '47, Ph.D., '61), Professor in the Division of the Humanities and the College. A Survey of Modern Algebra , the textbook that made it possible to teach undergraduate courses on abstract algebra. In addition to his mathematical research, he led several professional organizations and also chaired the University's Department of Mathematics from 1952 to 1958. In retirement he continued to help organize, attend and present at mathematical conferences until just a few years ago. In 1989 MacLane was awarded the National Medal of Science. Amid his demanding research and professional duties, MacLane always had time for students. Former students recalled the joy he took in teaching. One wrote, "It was evident that he would become thrilled as he saw a student begin to understand a difficult concept." Another wrote, "MacLane was unsurpassed in his ability to engage the student in dialogue about the concepts under discussion. He did not teach mathematics so much as lead the process of discovering it. He especially impressed upon the student the beauty, elegance and profundity of the subject. MacLane brought to the modern student the legacy of his own rigorous and deep classical training and helped make the student part of the continuum of centuries of mathematical progress."
