Sir Hector-Louis Langevin
Sir Hector-Louis Langevin, Member of Parliament for Dorchester, Quebec, and Minister of Public Works. Ottawa, July 1873.
(August 25, 1826 - June 11, 1906)
As a member of the Great Coalition , Hector-Louis Langevin attended all three conferences leading to Confederation in 1867 and helped to draft the text of the constitution. On 's death in 1873, Langevin became leader of the Quebec branch of the Conservative Party. In 1867, Langevin became secretary of state and superintendent general of Indian affairs. In 1869, John A. Macdonald made him minister of public works. Compromised by the Canadian Pacific scandal, which forced John A. Macdonald 's government to resign in 1873, Langevin left politics until 1876. When John A. Macdonald was re-elected prime minister in 1876, he reinstalled Langevin at the Post Office Department until 1879. Langevin also became minister of public works again. Throughout the 1880s, Langevin remained John A. Macdonald's right-hand man in Quebec, but conflicts within the Conservative Party undermined his influence. Louis-Rodrigue Masson, the new leader of the Quebec Liberal Party, and Joseph-Adolphe Chapleau attempted, with some success, to discredit him. When Louis Riel was hanged, Hector-Louis Langevin was one of the few Conservatives to survive the 1887 elections in Quebec. Despite the views of certain politicians, he remained the minister of public works. Prime Minister John Joseph Caldwell Abbott then went back on his promise to appoint Langevin lieutenant-governor of Quebec. Langevin left politics in 1896.

Major-General Sir Hector Archibald Macdonald 1853-1903
(K.C.B., D.S.O., A.D.C., L.L.D.)
Hector Macdonald, a crofter's son, began his military career as a private in the British army, and later became a Major General. Hector Macdonald fought in the Afghan war and both Boer wars. Distinguished himself when he saved the British army from total destruction at the Battle of Omdurman. At the Battle of Omdurman Macdonald's brigade met the attacking Dervishes with heavy fire, Macdonald kept his troops well organized and disciplined, he continually maneuvered the lines to meet the ongoing threat of the attacking Dervishes. "Amid the roar of the firing and the dust, smoke and confusion of the charge of front, the general [Macdonald] found time to summon the officers of IX Sudanese around him, rebuked them for having wheeled into line in anticipation of his order, and requested them to drill more steadily in brigade."- Winston Churchill Before long other regiments began to arrive and backup Macdonald's lines, the firing upon the Dervishes was so intense that they began to retreat, fleeing into the desert. At the battles end 10,000 Dervishes lay dead, 16,000 wounded, and 5,000 prisoners. The battle was over the British army saved, the army lost 48 men and 382 wounded. At the end of the day, when the ammunition from Macdonald's brigades was counted, there were two rounds per man. The British army won the battle and avenged the death of General Gordon of Khartoum. Macdonald was the hero of the day and truly saved the British army.

  • "This switchback journey of duplicity is orchestrated with skill and brio; and the denouement is both unexpected and teasingly ambiguous. Macdonald, who studied with Richard Dawkins, knows his subject inside-out: the narrative is peppered with fascinating insights into the far reaches of game theory and the ethical and political implications of emotion control." -

Major General Sir Hector Archibald MacDonald
(Fighting Mac) Soldier. Born at Muir of Allangrange on the Black Isle, MacDonald was the son of a crofter. He worked with a draper in Inverness, before joining the army, to serve in the Gordon Highlanders. His gallantry in Afghanistan saw him being promoted from the ranks (1880), a rare occurence at the time. He went on to serve with honour at the Battle of Omdurman in the Anglo-Sudanese campaign. MacDonald became a national hero and was knighted by King Edward VII in 1901. He led the Highland Brigade during the Boer War and took command of the army in Ceylon in 1902. MacDonald's name and face was widely used to sell products, but he had difficulty with his heroic status. In 1903, questions were raised about his sexuality and allegations made about his behaviour in Ceylon. There were suspicions that the allegations were fabricated by MacDonald's enemies. He was despised by some of the military establishment, who considered themselves of a superior class and looked down on MacDonald's thick Scottish accent, 'uncultured' ways and humble beginnings. Before any trial, the allegations were raised publicly in the

General Born the son of a Scottish crofter, he worked as an apprentice draper before enlisting in the army at the age of 17; he rose rapidly through the ranks and ultimately became a major-general. MacDonald first saw action, and was commissioned as an officer, in the Second Afgan War in the late 1870s, then distinguished himself in the battle of Majuba Hill in Sout Africa in 1881. After postings in Britain and Ireland, he was sent to Egypt in 1884. Here he recruited and trained a battalion of Sudanese soldiers, whom he led into several victorious battles, including one of the most legendary in British imperial history, Omdurman. In 1902 the army sent MacDonald to India to tke up a regional command, but he was there only briefly before being moved to Ceylon (actual Sri Lanka) as Commanding Officer of British forces. But after only 11 months MacDonald was summoned and told he must return to England to answer "grave, very grave charges". Although details remain unclear, MacDonald was alleged to have committed sexual improperties with four Ceylonese youths or (in a different version) to have exposed himself in a train carriage with 70 schoolboys. In London, Lord Roberts, the Chief of the Imperial General Staff ordered him to return to Ceylon to face a court-martial. In his way back, MacDonald comitted suicide in a Paris hotel. MacDonald had secretly married in 1884 and fathered a son, although he saw his wife on only four brief occasions in 19 years and never revealed his marriage to his military superiors.

Macdonald's novel 'The Mind Game' kin to 'The Magus'
    March 11, 2001
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us If you liked John Fowles' "The Magus," or Donna Tartt's "The Secret History," you will definitely like "The Mind Game" by British novelist Hector Macdonald (Ballantine, 2001, $24.95). Many novelists dislike comparisons of their work to other writers, but in a recent phone interview Macdonald didn't at all mind, agreeing that "The Magus" is "a very fine book" and that Tartt's is "a lovely book." Such generosity and good manners! Macdonald seems like a lovely young guy, also well-traveled and sophisticated for his age, which is 27. I spoke to him in his San Francisco hotel room by phone last Monday. I told him I was calling from Davis. "Davis? Oh, yes, I was just there," said Macdonald. "I spent Saturday night there with friends," he added. "On Sunday we drove a very windy road over to Napa. It was a very exciting ride in the rain," he said. Macdonald will never think of Davis as anything other than soggy and wet, like his London home, although I tried to convince him it was sunny and hot for seven months of the year.

Battle of Majuba Hill Battle of Paardeberg The Battle of Majuba Hill - The First Boer War 1881 On the night of 26 February 1881 Major-General Sir George Colley planned to lead a force of 650 soldiers and sailors, including 180 Gordon Highlanders to capture a hill called Majuba, the hill was steep and would take the soldiers all night to accomplish the goal. At dawn the army had taken the hill and now could see the Boer's camp below, Colley became a little to comfortable with assuming the position at the summit, Lieutenant Ian Hamilton and Colonel A.D. Macgregor suggested entrenchment, but Colley failed to do so. The Boers now could see the soldiers at the top of Majuba and began to take action, the commander put together a force and began to climb the steep hill. The Boers knowing the hill very well new how to climb the slopes and remain under cover. The Boers came over the crest of the summit and attacked, it had been said the Boers were firing so rapidly that you could only see their rifles through the smoke as they crept on. Their fire was so accurate the British quickly began a retreat-which soon became a rout.

emotional trauma and neuroscience are the subjects of one of the most exciting debut novels of 2001
For a first novel, it has travelled far. The Mind Game, 27-year-old Hector MacDonald's debut, has been sold to 20 publishers. The film rights have already been taken by the maker of Notting Hill and the book will be heavily promoted in the coming weeks (check out the website Despite all the hype, MacDonald insists that the key to success is the book's subject. He sought out something close to the spirit of this conspiratorial age: a student who volunteers for an experimental programme that takes a sinister turn. Understanding emotions
MacDonald had an interest in neuroscience, but it took a while to turn it into a subject suitable for a novel. Psychologist George Mandler ("one of the great men of emotional science") went through the books for him, corrected a few things, and reassured him. "You only have to think about how you go about measuring emotions for a few hours," MacDonald says. "Eventually, you come to the conclusion that you will have to manipulate and deceive someone, to put them in a situation they don't know about, that they are being measured.
