Francis Macaulay 's father was a Minister in the Methodist Church. He sent his son Francis to a school for the sons of Methodist Minister's in Bath, namely Kingswood School. Graduating from Kingswood School, Macaulay entered St John's College, Cambridge from which he graduated with distinction. After graduating from Cambridge, Macaulay returned to Kingswood School in Bath, where he had himself studied, and taught mathematics there for two years. He then went to London, becoming a teacher at St Paul's School. In this school he taught many outstanding pupils and he encouraged them into a research career in mathematics. two such students were Watson and Littlewood and we know of the teaching methods employed by Macaulay through the writing of Littlewood ... there was little formal instruction; students were directed to read widely but thoroughly, encouraged to be self-reliant, and inspired to look forward to pursuing research in mathematics. Macaulay wrote 14 papers on algebraic geometry and polynomial ideals. The papers look at algebraic curves, the Riemann

Francis Macaulay 's father, the Rev Samuel Macaulay, was a Minister in the Methodist Church. He sent his son Francis to a school for the sons of Methodist Ministers in Bath, namely Kingswood School. Graduating from Kingswood School in 1879, Macaulay entered St John's College, Cambridge, from which he graduated with distinction, being eighth Wrangler (ranked eighth in the list of First Class students) in the Mathematical Tripos of June 1882. In January of the following year he was placed seventh in the advanced papers of the Tripos. Now Francis Macaulay was not the only member of his family who excelled at mathematics. H F Baker writes [4]:- A brother, familiarly known to his contemporaries at Cambridge in as "Macaulay of Caius", was remarkable for his devotion to the theory of

Beard, Charles A. (1876-1958): § Beard had been on the faculty of Columbia University. In his earlier works his liberalism shone forth (he figured that, as property owners, the framers of the American Constitution were chiefly interested in constructing a charter to protect their wealth). He was a strong advocate of the idea that the study of history should include consideration of all cultural forces. He wrote several books with his wife, a historian of both the feministic and the labour movements. Beard's early liberalism faded toward the end of his life, when he began advocating more conservative ideas; he became an isolationist in foreign policy, and an outspoken critic of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

  • Notes.
Introduction:- Bacon's real claim to fame is: not that he, as the lord chancellor, in 1621, was removed from office for accepting a litigant's bribe; nor, that he was the real writer of the Shakespearean plays (one of the controversies in English literature, the "Baconian controversy") ; but rather Francis Bacon is known as a philosopher, one of the first order. Bacon delineated the principles of the inductive method, which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science, even though philosophers and scientists of the day, - and seemingly today, yet - repudiated both his theories and methodology, alike. Bacon argued that the only knowledge of importance to man was empirically rooted in the natural world; and that a clear system of scientific inquiry would assure man's mastery over the world. He was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power." He was quite taken up by the "materialist" theories and the resultant discoveries of both Copernicus and Galileo . Bacon, along with Galileo are known in the literature as "the great anti-Aristotelians who created the 'modern scientific' view of Nature."
