This page is an annotated bibliography on 3 subjects: symmetry, plane tiling theory, plane pattern theory. Symmetry is the mathematical study of symmetry; this usually means group theory with geometrical view. Tiling theory concerns tilings in the plane. Pattern theory concerns the classification of geometric patterns in the plane (e.g. wallpaper designs). The three subjects are related, but distinct. Among these are also aspects of computational geometry problems related to programs that draw patterns or find tilings. This is not a comprehensive list, but is fairly complete as a starting point for anyone interested in these subjects. The majority of references cited here are accessible by undergraduate math majors. A large number of websites are at the level of high school students or nonprofessionals. Others are for mathematicians. Both printed and web resources are included. It is worth noting that in general, the quality of printed publications are far superior than web resources. In particular, web resources lack depth and accuracy.

Sally Denton and Roger Morris share with you here their own experiences which led up to the writing of THE MONEY AND THE POWER. Sally grew up in Nevada and witnessed as a child the excess of the jeweled city in the desert. Roger's service in the White House led him to see many trails of corruption leading directly to Las Vegas. SALLY DENTON on growing up in the glow of Las Vegas I never thought I would write about Las Vegas, except as an adjunct to some other story. As a third-generation Nevadan who grew up in the 1960s in Boulder Citya tiny desert community 23 miles southeast of Las VegasI viewed the neon city in the distance as a mishmash of bad planning and ostentatious excess. Left to right (standing): Scott Denton, Red Skelton, Ralph and Sara Denton. (seated) Gail Sawyer, Mark Denton, and Sally Denton at the Riviera Hotel in 1958. This was the backdrop of my childhood, and one of the great good fortunes of my life is that I have come to an understanding about the significance and the role in the world of the strange city that lay just beyond our horizon.

by Herb Kane April 23th, 2003
(Out of 4 stars) "The Right Stuff" is a movie about the courage of seven men aiming for the skies to be one of the first Americans to step foot in space. We also see Chuck Yeager (Sam Shepard) flying a bullet-shaped Bell X-1 rocket plane (October 14, 1947) to be the first man to break the sound barrier in a flight over the Mojave Desert. Later the race is on to put a man in space and we see how seven pilots go through endless testing to prove their emotional and physical capabilities for the job - which oftentimes is laced with humor during tense times. Their wives don't exactly take on their passion. One backyard barbecue scene displays how the pilots love flying and the wives are distressed by the high accident rate (a one in four chance of dying). I especially like the brave attitudes of the pilots - like when they confront the designers to make a porthole in the spacecraft so they could see. They made the designers feel like monkeys, which at the time many would have preferred to use on flights instead of humans. Roger Ebert said in his review, "Seen now in the shadow of the Challenger and Columbia disasters, 'The Right Stuff' is a grim reminder of the cost of sending humans into space."

Jeremiah Duggan, 22, was run over by three cars on a motorway in Wiesbaden, Germany, on March 27, 2002, three days after attending a meeting of the far-right LaRouche Youth Movement. He had run out into the road in what was apparently a panicked state one hour after phoning his mother, Erica, of Dunstan Road, to tell her that he was in deep trouble'. But despite claims from Mrs Duggan that her son had been subjected to psychological terror', the public prosecutor in Wiesbaden, Hannelore Biniok, has refused calls for a full investigation into her son's death. Mrs Duggan plans to appeal the decision in the European Court of Human Rights unless a dramatic U-turn is made... To find out more, visit

ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: And now for an historical conversation about race. In calling for a national dialogue last weekend, President Clinton joined a long line of leaders who have grappled with the subject of race in America. And for perspective on that, we turn now to NewsHour regulars Presidential Historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Michael Beschloss, and Journalist and Author Haynes Johnson; and they’re joined tonight by Bill Kristol, editor and publisher of the "Weekly Standard," and Roger Wilkins, professor of American history at George Mason University. Michael, you heard Mark say that perhaps this is a way for the president to get on Mount Rushmore. That its all about historical legacy. How did the speech strike you as an historian? Mr. Beschloss: "I don’t think it’s a speech that will be very long remembered."

It was September 2002, and then-National Security Advisor, now-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was fastening on CNN perhaps the most memorable and frightening single link in the Bush regime’s chain of lies propagandizing the war on Iraq. Behind her carefully planted one-liner with its grim imagery was the whole larger hoax about Saddam Hussein possessing or about to acquire weapons of mass destruction, a deception as blatant and inflammatory as claims of the Iraqi dictator’s ties to Al Qaeda. Rice’s demagogic scare tactic was also very much part of the tangled history of alleged Iraqi purchases of uranium from Niger, the fabrication leading to ex-Ambassador Joseph Wilson’s now famous exposé of the fraud, the administration’s immediate retaliatory “outing” of Wilson’s wife Valerie Plame as a CIA operative, and now the revelation that the President’s supreme political strategist Karl Rove and Vice President Dick Cheney’s Chief of Staff Lewis Libby were involved in that potentially criminal leak—altogether the most serious political crisis Bush has faced. In fact, though her pivotal role has been missed entirely—or deliberately ignored—in both the media feeding frenzy and the rising political clamor, now-Secretary of State Rice was also deeply embroiled in the Niger uranium-Plame scandal, arguably as much as or more so than either Rove or Libby.
