TUDOR LODGE - "Let's Talk"
Bart Wise's excellent history of TUDOR LODGE (liner notes for "It All Comes Back"
On a bright summer day in 1971 in England, two young gents and a woman with a flute mounted the main stage at the Cambridge Folk Festival for their moment in the sun, remembered by all the band-members as their crowning achievement. "The whole atmosphere was still love and peace", the weather was fantastic, and despite nervousness that caused John Stannard's knee to bounce audibly and repeatedly against the microphone stand, Tudor Lodge poured out their honeyed harmonies and mesmeric spider web guitar background. The audience would remember and mention the set in almost every piece of writing about the band that appeared in the years after. The beginning of our story, however, and indeed the truest setting for our heroes lies in more intimate surroundings, the folk clubs scattered over the English countryside. Tudor Lodge was born in the year 1968 from the temporary union of John Stannard and Roger Strevens as a performing folk duo. Roger's character included an unusual, off-the-wall sense of humor and John tended not to speak at all in performance, a strange juxtaposition that insured that they would be remembered even by the most fleetingly attentive members of any audience. Perhaps fortunately, Roger decided that he had "had enough" sometime in late 1969 and abandoned John to a series of about six shows they had committed to play. With hopes of fulfilling his obligations to the several clubs, John approached a young guitarist he had observed playing in clubs on occasion, one Lyndon Greene, with the intention of asking him to fill in for Roger on their last few gigs. Lyndon had recently returned from a spell in Turkey, where he had been forging his own "hippie trail" through the psychedelic hinterlands, and was ripe for a new adventure. They agreed to finish out the six gigs together, and upon the successful conclusion of that run of shows saw no reason not to continue on.

General Asscrack And The Bill of Rights
Former Clinton Commerce Department officials say pressure from Capitol Hill played a large role in their eventual decision to lift export controls on encryption technology. "They had us against the wall," says one. Ashcroft at the time said he was "pleased" that "the Administration finally has listened to those of us in Congress who long have urged export decontrol." That was in 1999, a year after the U.S. indicted Wadih El Hage in the plot to bomb two American embassies in East Africa. According to the indictment, El Hage sent encrypted e-mails to associates in al-Qaeda. Since becoming Attorney General, Ashcroft has not pushed to change the policy. Only a lunatic would read the following as the work of a "liberal journalist," desperate to "rescue" the Kerry campaign: YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, April 27 - The man who would be president takes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches - on whole wheat, strawberry jelly preferred to grape - twice a day on the campaign trail. He wears $15 reading glasses, off the rack at CVS. Before bedtime, he starts but rarely finishes movies like "Seabiscuit" and "The Blues Brothers" in his hotel suite. Come morning, he leaves $20 for the maid.

Johnson and King "were very different men. But what they had in common was a true passion for justice and a commitment deep in their souls - an urgency about improving the plight of the poorest and most helpless people in society." Roger Wilkins, Johnson-era Justice Department official,

The RAND Mathematics Study Panel was charged with defining a core problem of mathematics teaching and learning and mapping out a comprehensive, long range program of research and development that will assist the nation in dealing with that problem. The Panel identified the need for all students to become proficient in mathematics. This need is urgent since adults now need significantly more mathematical proficiency in order to participate fully in the 21st Century economy and society. While the emphasis is on the problem of proficiency, the panel recognized the need for those who will be engaged in scientific and technological fields to acquire even higher levels of mathematical skills than ever before. The RAND Mathematics Study Panel was composed of eighteen prominent mathematics education researchers, mathematicians, mathematics teachers, and policy makers. The Panel deliberated face-to-face and through email, and its initial findings are presented in a draft report on this web site.

Send this review to a friend LBJ: King of the Hill REVIEW BY ROGER BISHOP In Master of the Senate , the third volume of his magisterial study of Lyndon Johnson, Robert Caro continues to probe the personal and political sides of a complex man who, during the 1950s, "put on a show so riveting that Capitol Hill had never seen anything like it during the previous century and a half of the Republic's existence." Detailing his subject's fierce ambition to "be somebody", in particular the president of the United States, Caro offers a fascinating look at this respected and feared leader. As Senate majority leader, Johnson skillfully maneuvered the Civil Rights Act of 1957 to enactment, the first civil rights legislation Congress had passed in 82 years. Johnson, who throughout his career had always opposed civil rights bills, seemed an unlikely politician to accomplish what many principled reformers had tried and failed to do for decades. But Caro demonstrates that he was the only person who could have achieved this legislative goal. Under Johnson's leadership, key decisions were made in negotiations away from the Senate floor. A principle that determined whether legislation would be passed or defeated during this period was whether or not it would further Johnson's personal career. Compassion was sometimes on a parallel track with ambition, but if there was a conflict, ambition won.
