The year was 1993, and it began with the death of one of Springfield's most beloved citizens, Maureen Bauer. For Roger, Holly, Ed and Michelle, her death began a storyline that exploded at the Cliff House in July. We've included a few transcripts which provide an overview and review of the events and emotions that precipitated what happened at Cliff House, and we'll continue to add transcripts that tell the story up to and after Cliff House. Reynolds , father and daughter, have come up with two titles (in order) for that elusive mantle of "best movie ever made." In our house father and daughter lean these two ways . Guess which is which. UPDATE: For the record, that was my favorite movie as of nine o'clock on this Saturday morning. An hour, even a half hour, later it was something else . And this, for me, is the most haunting of all.

Gotta go with daughter on that one (maybe she'll grow out of it?). Posted by: Kyda Sylvester at June 25, 2005 09:16 AM “The movie, from 1933, is tremendously satirical, a play on politics and war. (As Firefly says to a hapless young solider, "You're a brave man. Go and break through the lines. And remember, while you're out there risking your life and limb through shot and shell, we'll be in be in here thinking what a sucker you are.")” I don’t recall ever seeing Duck Soup. It probably is very funny. Did the antiwar sentiments expressed by Groucho Marx unwittingly discouraged our dealing with Adolph Hitler while there was still to minimize the danger? I wonder if he would have uttered the same lines just six years later.

Last night even their vaunted martinis were bad-or at least wrong. Sheryl and I had ordered two Ketel One 'martis', up, with olives and only one came out with the Shirley Temple we ordered for Madeleine. I sent the waiter back for mine and he returned fifteen minutes later with a gin martini. (Yes, I know, some say I should be ordering gin in the first place, but let's not get into that. Allow me my yuppie eccentricities.) Of course, I downed it anyway, but even the pony of extra martini they provide with your glass couldn't overcome my displeasure with my grilled pork chops, another supposed favorite, which were tougher than the proverbial shoe leather, in fact virtually inedible. Madeleine didn't like the sand dabs or the spinach and couldn't figure out why her mother and I loved this place so much. At six and a half, Fitzgerald and Chandler don't mean much to her. As we drove away, I knew a tradition was ending and we wouldn't be back soon. But I wasn't sad really. So many ideas have changed for me lately, so many traditions, I almost expected it.

Lyndon Bowring Letter - 15 Jun 2005
On 15 June 2005 United for Life wrote to CARE following a UCB Europe radio programme where Roger Smith, Head of Public Policy of CARE and Joanna Thompson spoke about CARE. This letter was directed to the Chairman, Lyndon Bowring. We had an e-mail from them wishing to discuss the letter over the phone but United for Life replied via e-mail that we would appreciate a written reply so that we could take time to consider all the points made. A reply was received from Joanna on 22 July 2005 following an e-mail request by Noal Leach, General Director of CARE that Joanna be forwarded a copy of our letter to Lyndon Bowring on 15 June 05 so that Joanna could respond on CARE's behalf.

JUDGMENT DAYS
January 17, 2005
To mark the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Jeffrey Brown speaks with civil rights author Nick Kotz and Roger Wilkins, history professor at George Mason University.
JIM LEHRER: And finally tonight, to Jeffrey Brown for a Martin Luther King Day, new book conversation. JEFFREY BROWN: This year marks the 40th anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a key piece of an immensely fertile period of civil rights activity and legislation. Two figures towered over that period: Martin Luther King Jr. and Lyndon Baines Johnson. A new book titled "Judgment Days" tells the story of these two leaders and of what it calls the laws that changed America. Its author is Nick Kotz, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and writer. Also joining us is Roger Wilkins, professor of history at George Mason University. He served in various posts in the Johnson administration. Nick Kotz, the first words of your book are "they were unlikely partners." Why don't we start there. Why unlikely? NICK KOTZ: They were unlikely for a number of reasons. Johnson was a man of Washington. To him, power was exercised from Washington and if you wanted to do business in Washington, you came there and petitioned the government. Dr. King was not only a preacher, he was a great organizer of people in the streets.

Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon were labeled 'imperial presidents,' recalls former White House adviser Roger Morris. But neither could hold a candle to today's George Bush
by Roger Morris
Whatever his triumph in Iraq, George W. Bush already enjoyed a victory of historic proportions in the United States. By unique dominance of Congress and the rest of government, and to the approval of the American media and an impressive majority in the polls, Mr. Bush had acquired power beyond the grasp of any predecessor. Before U.S. forces ever roared through Baghdad, their Commander-in-Chief was America's most imperial president. The specter of an emperor in the White House is familiar to an American system that lurches between the wider powers of the modern president and the long-sacred constitutional restraints placed on executive supremacy. In his noted 1973 book, The Imperial Presidency By the mid 1970s, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Nixon had left Washington in disrepute. Congress reasserted itself in the War Powers Act, which limited the unilateral power of the president to go to war, and take certain other steps. Presidential authority shrank under Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.

Roger Kerr Op-Ed: Are Tax Cuts Inflationary?

Opinion: New Zealand Business Roundtable
Are Tax Cuts Inflationary?
By Roger L Kerr
Op-Ed In Otago Daily Times 15 July. In arguing against tax cuts, one point that finance minister Michael Cullen asserts is that they would push up prices, and that the Reserve Bank would have to raise interest rates to curb inflation. To any serious economist, this argument is an embarrassment. Even at a superficial level, tax increases are more likely to push up prices and reductions in tax are likely to lower them. This is easy to see with GST. When the Goods and Services Tax was introduced there was a relatively brief spike in prices. Increases in excise tax on petrol push up the CPI. Changes in income taxes have similar effects. When the Muldoon government imposed a wage-price freeze in the early 1980s, it cut income taxes to encourage wage earners to be more moderate in their wage demands. The idea of a wage-tax trade-off was to reduce pressure on wage costs and prices. Conversely, when the government lifted the top tax rate from 33 to 39 cents in the dollar in 2000, some firms had to increase wages so that the post-tax incomes of their workers did not fall, in order to retain them. This added to their costs and price pressures.

First-order Model Theory
First-order model theory, also known as classical model theory, is a branch of mathematics that deals with the relationships between descriptions in first-order languages and the structures that satisfy these descriptions. From one point of view, this is a vibrant area of mathematical research that brings logical methods (in particular the theory of definition) to bear on deep problems of classical mathematics. From another point of view, first-order model theory is the paradigm for the rest of model theory ; it is the area in which many of the broader ideas of model theory were first worked out.

Reality Shift
I'm no expert on life and Reality, that's for sure. But after thirty some-odd years, a girl can't help but notice obvious patterns and you sort of know what can be expected from your life. Sometimes, however, things happen that are just so ... well ... so unexpected that the only way their occurrence can be explained is that some kind of reality shift must have taken place, and suddenly all the rules are changed. That's what happened to me on August 16, 1996. There's just no other way to explain it. Now you might not think the email I received was that big a deal, particularly in my line of work as an activist, with twenty years under her belt, turned administrator for one of the world's largest environmental organizations. But at the time it was a monumental shift in my understanding of the world. I'd started out early in life as a girl burning with a passion to change the world. I was haunted by a vision of a simpler, happier more beautiful world that had visited my dreams for as long as I could remember.

Condoleezza Rice at the Center of the Plame Scandal

By Roger Morris
Commondreams.com Thursday 28 July 2005 We don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud." It was September 2002, and then-National Security Advisor, now-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was fastening on CNN perhaps the most memorable and frightening single link in the Bush regime's chain of lies propagandizing the war on Iraq. Behind her carefully planted one-liner with its grim imagery was the whole larger hoax about Saddam Hussein possessing or about to acquire weapons of mass destruction, a deception as blatant and inflammatory as claims of the Iraqi dictator's ties to Al Qaeda. Rice's demagogic scare tactic was also very much part of the tangled history of alleged Iraqi purchases of uranium from Niger, the fabrication leading to ex-Ambassador Joseph Wilson's now famous expos© of the fraud, the administration's immediate retaliatory "outing" of Wilson's wife Valerie Plame as a CIA operative, and now the revelation that the President's supreme political strategist Karl Rove and Vice President Dick Cheney's Chief of Staff Lewis Libby were involved in that potentially criminal leak - altogether the most serious political crisis Bush has faced. In fact, though her pivotal role has been missed entirely - or deliberately ignored - in both the media feeding frenzy and the rising political clamor, now-Secretary of State Rice was also deeply embroiled in the Niger uranium-Plame scandal, arguably as much as or more so than either Rove or Libby.
