Each new decade sees a new wave of innovative technology. Experts in the 1950s thought that the world's computing needs could be supplied by half a dozen computers. The 1990s saw digital processors become so inexpensive that a car could use dozens of computers to control it. Today just one Porsche contains ninety-two processors. According to Paul Saffo, director of the Institute for the Future, changes just as dramatic will be caused by massive arrays of sensors that will allow computers to control our environment. In Saffo's vision of the future, we will have smart rooms that clean themselves with a carpet of billions of tiny computer-controlled hairs. Airplanes will have wings with micromachine actuators that will automatically adjust to handle turbulence. These smart machines will require computers that can process vast amounts of sensor data rapidly, far faster than today's digital computers. To make Saffo's vision a reality may well require a rebirth of technology that many consider obsolete in this era of digital computersanalog computers.

Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. For correction, comments, or questions, write to Karl Dilcher ( dilcher@mscs.dal.ca You can scroll through this list, or jump to the beginning of the letter:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jan Keresztes and Ronald Lukasiewicz Receive 2000 Lillian D. Terris Award For Distinguished Board Service Professional Examination Service (PES) is pleased to announce the selection of Jan M. Keresztes, Pharm.D., and Ronald H. Lukasiewicz, R.Ph., as the recipients of the 2000 Lillian D. Terris Award for Distinguished Board Service. Named in honor of the first president of PES, the award recognizes individuals whose service contributions have enhanced the public and professional understanding of the missions of credentialing organizations and the meaning associated with professional credentials. Keresztes served as a member of the Certification Council of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) from 1995 to 1999, including one year as Chair of the Council. Prior to her work with the PTCB, she was Chair of the Commission on Technician Certification for the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) state certification program from 1982 to 1989. As Chair, she helped establish the ICHP pharmacy technician certification examination and was vital in the merging of the ICHP state examination with other state examinations into what was to become the premier national examination for pharmacy technicians in the United States. Lukasiewicz served a member of the PTCB Certification Council from 1995 to 2000, including a two-year term as Chair of the Council. Prior to his work with the PTCB, Lukasiewicz served as Chair of the Board of Examiners for the Michigan Certified Pharmacy Technician Program from 1981 to 1989. Working with the Michigan Pharmacist Association (MPA), he instituted the first certification program for pharmacy technicians and the first textbook for the training of pharmacy technicians. Under the leadership of Lukasiewicz, the MPA became one of the founding sponsors of the PTCB.

Yes, people do have some idea of what ancient Egyptian sounded like.
This is based upon such things as the words in related languages
(ancient Egyptian is an "Afro-Asiatic" language, related to the Semitic
languages and Coptic); transcriptions of names from other languages
(most famously in the Rosetta stone). The vowel sounds are most speculative (I think that they are ignored in the writing, much as is

Egyptian Hieroglyphics partially reflected the sound of the spoken
language. They weren't just pictures of things, but a full way of
representing the spoken speech. For example, for a word which wasn't
easily pictured, a homonym or group of homonyms could be used (sort of
    like rebus writing).
I am happy that he agrees that without spoken speech, the idea of a
phonetic (to be pedantic about it, that should be "phonemic", but let's
not quibble) alphabet wouldn't occur to anyone. For it is just as true
that without spoken speech the idea of Hieroglyphics wouldn't have occured to anybody. Someone with better knowledge than I would have to comment on the Sumerian cuneiform writing (slightly older than Hieroglyphics), but I

What tends to be overlooked, however, is that a naturalized theory of mental representation will not, by itself, salvage intentional realism. Since most naturalistic properties play no interesting causal role, intentional realists must also solve the problem of showing how intentional properties (such as representational properties), even if naturalized, could be causally efficacious. Because of certain commitments, this problem is especially difficult for intentional realists such as Fodor. In the current paper I focus on the problem as it arises for such realists, and I argue that the best-known solution proposed to date is inadequate. If what I say is correct, then such intentional realists are left with an additional and substantial problem, and one that has generally not been sufficiently appreciated.

The abilities to handle uncertain information and to reason nonmonotonically from incomplete knowledge are crucial features of an intelligent behaviour in a complex and dynamic environment. This is why reasoning under uncertainty and nonmonotonic reasoning have established themselves as major research areas in Artificial Intelligence during the recent decades. The aim of this special
