On Vu's thin basis theorem in Waring's problem
Source: Duke Math. J. Abstract:
V. Vu has recently shown that when k s is sufficiently large in terms of k k ), whose number of elements up to t is smaller than a constant times ( t log t s , for which all large integers n are represented as the sum of s k k ) in order log n ways. We establish this conclusion with s k log k , improving on the constraint implicit in Vu's work which forces s to be as large as k k . Indeed, the methods of this paper show, roughly speaking, that whenever existing methods permit one to show that all large integers are the sum of H (k) k th powers of natural numbers, then H k )+2 variables suffice to obtain a corresponding conclusion for "thin sets," in the sense of Vu. THE FUSION OF THE EPIC AND DRAMATIC: HEMINGWAY, STRINDBERG AND O'NEILL In The Historical Novel George Lukács expresses his agreement with a statement in which Goethe points out the difference between epic and dramatic motivations for literary action: Goethe ... analyses the different motifs governing action, finding some that are common to both epic and drama and others that form particular characteristics of either of the two genres. These motifs are, according to Goethe: "1. Progressive ones , which further the action; such are used primarily by drama. 2. Retrogressive ones , which distance the action from its goal; such are used almost exclusively by the epic poem" (Lukács I 145). Luk cs also shares Goethe's view that retrogressive motifs should be distinguished from retarding ones; rather than diverting the action from its goal, retarding factors "hold up the pace or increase the distance,; such are used by both kinds of literature to the greatest advantage" (Lukács I 145). Thus retarding motifs can be both dramatic and epic. In the works of Ibsen, Hauptmann, Strindberg, Chekhov and O'Neill, however, their role is rather pronounced in making the drama episodic, and in not only holding back but also considerably broadening the progress of the action, whose stages are often meticulously portrayed. This brings a strong epic tendency with it.

    The historian as anti-populist
Traditionalist historian John Lukacs laments the direction of conservatism in America

    By Jeet Heer
    Boston Globe (March 6, 2005)
    (revised and expanded)
POPULISM FIRST EMERGED in America in the late 19th century as a radical political movement pushing for labor reform, progressive taxation, the regulation of business, and economic justice for the little guy. But in recent decades, as observers like journalist Thomas Frank and historian Michael Kazin have pointed out, the populist notion of an embattled people fighting an entrenched elite has evolved into a staple of the conservative worldview. From Joseph McCarthy finding treason in ''the bright young men who are born with silver spoons in their mouths'' to Richard Nixon speaking up for ''the silent majority'' to George W. Bush complaining about those who ''think they're all of a sudden smarter than the average person because they happen to have an Ivy League degree,'' the right has consistently won elections by talking the language of Power to the People.
But criticism of the marriage between conservatism and populism comes not only from the left. In his bracing new book

SHIRLEY LUKACS Membership Vice President 's bio: I attended Lane Community College for three years (1987-1990). While at Lane, I was a Student Service Associate (worked in the Career Center and the Counseling Dept.). I graduated from the University of Oregon with a B.A. in Psychology. I am currently working on my Masters Certificate in Academic Advising. I have lived in several foreign countries (India, Germany, Canary Islands, briefly in Pakistan) and I have traveled to several other countries. I attended Oregon Institute of Leadership Development (OILD) in 2003. This experience was profound. I began to see my role at Lane as more than the position I was hired for, but also as a person working to create a positive and supportive environment with my coworkers. I have attended AAWCC conferences which continue to support leadership and professional growth. I am currently Vice President of Membership for our campus chapter and look forward to actively involving other women in this organization.
