O’NEILL IN HUNGARY: A LETTER January 9, 1977 Dear Professor Wilkins: At the MLA Annual Convention held in New York on December 26-29, I read the Preview Issue of The Eugene O’Neill Newsletter . I am delighted with the plan to establish a Newsletter in which O’Neillians “of academe” and “of the proscenium” will have a chance to exchange their views on an American dramatist of international standing. Since O’Neill’s dramatic scope is truly universal, it is little wonder that O’Neill scholarship also has an international character. There is a great deal of interest in O’Neill in Hungary, too. His greatest plays ( The Emperor Jones Desire Under the Elms Mourning Becomes Electra The Iceman Cometh Long Day’s Journey Into Night A Moon for the Misbegotten A Touch of the Poet , and More Stately Mansions ) have been translated into Hungarian. Among the one-act plays, the early

Multidimensional Statistical Analysis and Theory of Random Matrices
Proceedings of the Sixth Eugene Lukacs Symposium Editors: A.K. Gupta and V.L. Girko This volume contains the papers from the Sixth Eugene Lukacs Symposium on ``Multidimensional Statistical Analysis and Random Matrices'', which was held at the Bowling Green State University, Ohio, USA, 2930 March 1996. Multidimensional statistical analysis and random matrices have been the topics of great research. The papers presented in this volume discuss many varied aspects of this all-encompassing topic. In particular, topics covered include generalized statistical analysis, elliptically contoured distribution, covariance structure analysis, metric scaling, detection of outliers, density approximation, and circulant and band random matrices. This volume will be of great value and interest to researchers in the above fields. 1996; xii+386 pages

STATISTICAL COLLECTIONS GUIDE The Special Collections Department holds many prominent collections relating to statistics. Included are the archival records of the American Statistical Association (ASA), founded in 1839 and one of the oldest professional organizations in the United States. It also contains collections documenting the editorial activities of the Journal of the American Statistical Association , published by ASA, and the Annals of Statistics , published by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS). In addition, there are collections of personal papers of notable statisticians in the United States, many of them former officers and fellows of the ASA or the IMS. Department Newsletter PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES Good bye: Randy Fischer Congratulations to: Glen Hartless and Christy Steible were married on May 17th in Gainesville. Sue McGorray recently landed a 28 inch, 7-pound redfish on light spinning tackle while sea-kayaking in Lemon Bay near Englewood, Florida. She was out on the water with reknown fishing guide Paul "PK" Kubilis (known by many in the Sarasota area as "The Trout King of South Lido"), who made her hold the fish so that photographic evidence of the catch could be obtained. Since the redfish was longer than the upper legal limit of 27 inches, it was resuscitated and released back into the wild. David Nations baby was born May 28 at home (as they had planned), time of birth was 7:19 pm, 10 lb. 4 oz., 22-1/4" long. His name is Joshua David Nations. David and his wife will celebrating their 5th wedding anniversary soon. May and June are exciting times for them. Yoko Tanaka was married on May 3rd in Georgia. Her husband's name is Micah Kerr. She will be keeping her last name. ƒ Beiyao Zheng is the proud mother of abeautiful baby girl born April 12 at 8:21 PM. Margaret Li weighed in at 7 lb 2 oz and is 18 3/4 inches long.

The names in this alphabetical list are represented by archival collections at the given locations in North America. No attempt is made to indicate where papers or letters by one person may also be located in the collection of another. Such cross references are often given in the collection descriptions in the indicated sources. Some mathematicians have been included for whom there are no known collections of papers. They are here only as reminders of the inevitable incompleteness of the historical record. Still there may be a possibility of filling in such gaps sometime. Driscoll says that, under certain restrictions, the probability that a given Gaussian process has its sample paths almost surely in a given reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) is either or . Driscoll also found a necessary and sufficient condition for that probability to be Doing away with Driscoll's restrictions, R. Fortet generalized his condition and named it nuclear dominance . He stated a theorem claiming nuclear dominance to be necessary and sufficient for the existence of a process (not necessarily Gaussian) having its sample paths in a given RKHS. This theorem - specifically the necessity of the condition - turns out to be incorrect, as we will show via counterexamples. On the other hand, a weaker sufficient condition is available.
