Chess Problem with Chancellor 1
This problem has been invented around 1889 by the famous American game and puzzle inventor Samuel Loyd. It was published in a book on Chancellor Chess by the American Ben Foster. The problem is taken from an article on Chancellor Chess from issue 11, Summer 1993 of Variant Chess , by George Jellis. White
King h6; Chancellor e4; Rook a5, e1; Knight a3, b3; Bishop f8. Black
King d5; Rook d7, g2; Knight a2, h5; Pawn b5, c5, c6, d6, f3, f4, g5, h7. White to mate in two moves.
The chancellor is a piece that has the combined moves of rook and knight (in the same manner as the queen has the combined moves of bishop and rook).
Solution

Need some help, mate?
December 29, 2002
Click "Stop" on your browser to stop the music and "Refresh" to start it. Chess is all about mate. You must admit that the ultimate goal of the game should receive its share of attention. Only problem is that mates never actually occur. Virtually never. Sometimes at an open or in a blitz game a grandmaster will actually deliver mate; and many have done so in their early pre-teen tournaments. But even when they mate it is usually a very mundane affair, with a protected queen slamming itself onto a square next to the enemy king, or one of those perennial backrank affairs. This is natural, because each side is trying to prevent the other from executing a brilliant checkmate. All this is a real shame, because the game of chess contains a vast treasure-trove of extraordinarily beautiful mating motifs. There are thousands and thousands of checkmate positions which we normal human beings playing in regular chess tournaments will never see.

All care has been taken in attempting to decipher the names, but sometimes it is very difficult, and thus names could have been transcribed incorrectly inadvertently.

SUGGESTIONS: Use your browser's [FIND] or [SEARCH] feature to query the surname you are seeking. This list is in alphabetic order but the township and page number can be used for geographical proximity. Multiple spellings should be attempted when searching for a particular surname. If that fails try a fragment of the surname. You can even search for an unusual given name if you like. John is not a recommended try. American biochemist and corecipient, with Robert William Holley and Har Gobind Khorana, of the 1968 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. He was noted for his role in deciphering the genetic code. He demonstrated that, with the exception of "nonsense codons," each possible triplet (called a codon) of four different kinds of nitrogen-containing bases found in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and, in some viruses, in ribonucleic acid (RNA) ultimately causes the incorporation of a specific amino acid into a cell protein. American chemist best known for his syntheses of complex organic substances, including quinine, the well-known antimalarial (1944), the steroids cholesterol and cortisone (1951), and vitamin B (1971). He also synthesized lanosterol, the famous poison strychnine and reserpine. Several other examples from the chemistry of the alkaloids are lysergic acid, ergonovine, ellipticine, colhicine. In the field of antibiotics Woodward established the structure of aureomycin and terramycin. He has also synthesized chlorophyll, the green plant pigment. He established the structure of many compounds, for instance the peculiar fish poison tetrodotoxin, causing numerous fatalities in Japan. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1965. Surprising discovery in known Loyd's #3
In 2001 there was organized international match Slovakia-Ukraina in 4 sections. In #3 section there was set theme: change of set model mates in #3. My enthusiastic colleague Daniel Novomesky searched a bit among known older problems and he has made a shocking discovery - if we turn the solution of Loyd's castling tanagra #3 into set play, we get another correct threemover, with analogous set play, try and solution. Just watch the things in motion... A bit unfortunately, the judge of the competition put his problem to the last "Slovak" place, thus it was free and quickly published.
(A few weeks later...)
As it was partially expected, this discovery was too shocking to be real... and it was indeed fortunate for Slovakia not having Daniel's problem placed higher. What happened? I recently received an e-mail from Michael Lipton, one of leading orthodox miniature experts. He writes: "Novomesky's version is anticipated. It was published first by A. J. Taffs, American Chess Bulletin 1960, alongside Loyd's original New York Albion 1857 ... The twins are in Colin Russ's miniature collection, no. 369. ... Note also there is a lovely Shinkman 3er (no. 240 in Russ) that can be twinned to all these by Zeroposition ... Also an old 3er by J. Hane (publication?) that is not on a par with the above fine problems, but really just a cute trick - but another relation."
