Young Ada's curiosity, originality and imagination blossomed into a passionate desire for a path in "poetical science". Her untimely death would not allow the wish for a profession in mathematics or music to be fulfilled, yet Ada's insights were nevertheless destined to foreshadow the essential nature of the field we know today as computer science.. The Women and Mathematics contest is designed to encourage you to carry out a brief web-based biographical research on a famous female personality who has made major contributions to the mathematical sciences. Each month you will have the chance to become acquainted with a fascinating individual. The correct entries will participate in a monthly draw for a prize. Sandra D. Shattuck I wrote this paper for a computer science course in Spring 2000. Sue Bogar , who was my instructor at UMBC encouraged me to take on this topic. I am indebted to Sue's excellent teaching, including her unforgettable presentation of the definition of an algorithm. Imagine a computer programmer who still programs in bits and bytes and has never heard of the terms "bug" or "de-bugging." Then, stretch your mind much further, and try to imagine a world without computers. Most of us, no matter what age, don't have such powerful imaginations. But without the contributions of women like Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, who developed the first compiler, and Lady Augusta Ada Byron Lovelace, who made the idea of an Analytical Engine accessible to a world without computers, our most advanced computing device for general use would very likely still be a simple calculator. Lovelace and Hopper are by no means the only women who have made invaluable contributions to the field of computer science. Without Betty Holberton, who "devised the first sort-merge generator, for UNIVAC I" ( AWC, "Frances..."

Ada Lovelace by Shawn Stoffer Computer Science 451 University of New Mexico Fall 1999 She turned out to be much like her father though. She died at the age of thirty-six, like her father, was prone to bursts of energy, and had poetic tendencies, which she related to her mother later in her life. Though she was not to be with her father throughout her life, and in fact never got to know her father at all. Her father, had had been accused of taking his half-sister to be his mistress, and the controversy surrounding this ended his marriage to Ada’s mother, less than 5 weeks after Ada had been born. Her mother apparently did not want her daughter to turn out like her father, and therefore taught her disdain for her artistic talents, and instead nurtured her mathematical and scientific abilities. To further subdue her daughter’s non-conforming ideas, she fed Ada a laudanum-laced tonic, which created an addiction, and most likely did not help the illnesses which plagued Ada’s life (Rheingold, 1985). She is often regarded as the first computer programmer, by helping to develop a machine thought of by Charles Babbage, which she helped him to develop, though sadly was not finished within her, or even his lifetime. This story though is not necessarily true, as a few of my sources related, that Babbage, having designed the machine in the first place would no doubt have already written some programs for his Analytical Engine, before Ada. This is inconsequential except to those who care that someone have done something first. The entire issue is eclipsed by the fact that Ada Lovelace was a very good mathematician and further intelligent enough to understand the potential of Charles Babbage’s ideas at the first demonstration of the Difference Engine, where she met Charles Babbage and spoke to him at length about the Engine. Babbage noted after this meeting that "She seems to understand it better than I do, and is far, far better at explaining it."(Rheingold, 1985)

Ada as a child
Not much seems to be written about Ada's youth. We know her mathematical aptitude was certainly recognized and encouraged by her mother. We also know that like many other young women of her time that she enjoyed concerts, theatres, and parties. In other words she was a very well rounded individual. At the age of seventeen Ada was introduced to Mary Somerville, a mathematician whom Ada deeply admired. Mrs. Somerville encouraged Ada in her mathematical studies. It was through Mrs. Somerville that Ada met her future husband.
Marriage and children
Ada Byron was married at nineteen to a man who was eleven years her senior. This man was William Lord King who soon became the Earl of Lovelace. They enjoyed a warm and caring relationship. Lord Lovelace took a keen interest in his wife's work and was very supportive. Intellectually, Ada was superior , regardless, it created no problem in their marriage. Lord Lovelace accepted his wife's talents and took pride in her many accomplishments.
The couple settled in the country where they had two sons and a daughter. Interestingly, the daughter, following the footsteps of her mother and grandmother, showed a keen interest in mathematics to later become a famous Arabic Scholar.

Concerned that the outspoken child would turn out as nonconformist as Lord Byron himself, she attempted to curb her. Ada was administered a daily dose of a laudanum-laced tincture, which produced a "calming" effect. It also produced an addiction, which would be joined by other addictions later in her life.
Ada's mother was an accomplished mathematician (whimsically known in some circles as "the Princess of Parallelograms"), and she encouraged Ada when she began to display an aptitude for math as a child. She was educated at home by governesses and tutors specially selected by her mother. (Once Ada tried to elope with one of them.) At 15 she was introduced by her mother to the renowned Scottish mathematician Mary Fairfax Somerville. The two attended geography lectures together at the University of London in 1830. Afterwards, they kept up a correspondence regarding matters of mathematics.

Augusta Ada Byron Lovelace
In the Bodleian Library at Oxford University there is a massive collection of letters, diaries, and papers concerning the life of the world's first computer programmer, Ada Byron Lovelace. These items were collected by her son, Ralph Milbanke, second Earl of Lovelace. Ada lived over 150 years ago and wrote the program for a machine that had not yet been built. She was a woman whose intuition allowed her to see beyond what was to what could be. Ada Lovelace was born Augusta Ada Byron on December 10, 1815. She was the only legitimate daughter of the poet, George Gordon Noel (Lord Byron) and his wife Annabella Milbanke. This match between one of the most popular, romantic men in England and his wealthy bride was short lived; Annabella left him when Ada was a month old and Lord Byron never saw his daughter again. He died in 1824 of a fever. When Ada was three, Lord Byron wrote the following words:
  • Is your face like thy mother's, my fair child!
Ada! sole daughter of my house and heart?
