Hendrik Antoon Lorentz, the son of Gerrit Frederik Lorentz and his wife, Geertruida van Ginkel, was born on July 18, 1853, in Aarnhem. At the age of 9 he mastered the use of a table of logarithms. In high school he excelled in the sciences, as well as in history and languages. In 1870 he passed the examinations to qualify for the University of Leiden. By the end of the next year he had become a doctoral candidate. During the next 2 years Lorentz taught high school physics and mathematics in Aarnhem. In June 1873 he returned to Leiden and received his doctoral degree; his dissertation revealed at one stroke his extraordinary grasp of what constituted at that time the most advanced and most portentous part of theoretical physics, J. Painting of Hendrik Lorentz by Arnhemensis Hendrik Antoon Lorentz July 18 Arnhem February 4 Haarlem ) was a Dutch physicist and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on electromagnetic radiation Lorentz attended primary school in Arnhem until he was 13 years of age when he entered the new High School there. He entered the University of Leiden in 1870 but, in 1872, he returned to Arnhem to take up teaching evening classes. He worked for his doctorate while holding the teaching post. In his doctoral thesis for University of Leiden (1875), Lorentz refined the electromagnetic theory of James Clerk Maxwell to better explain the reflection and refraction of light. His name is now associated with the Lorentz-Lorenz formula. He was appointed professor of mathematical physics at the Univiersity of Leiden in 1878. Lorenz je považován za zakladatele elektronové teorie. Im Februar 1872 nahm er die Lehrtätigkeit am Abendgymnasium in Arnheim auf und bildete sich autodidaktisch weiter, so dass er 1875 promovieren konnte. Auf Grundlage der Maxwell -Theorie erklärte er in seiner Dissertation " Sur la théorie de la réflexion et de la réfraction de la lumière " die Brechung und Reflexion des Lichtes.
