Lavrentev is remembered for an outstanding book on conformal mappings and he made many important contributions to that topic. In the 1940s he developed the theory of quasi-conformal mappings which gave a new geometrical approach to partial differential equations. One of the major areas to which he applied this work was to hydrodynamics. The 1940s was a period of industrialization and construction and, after 1945, Lavrentev founded new areas of research in mechanics and applied physics which were aimed at laying the theoretical foundation necessary for the large construction projects of building dams, canals and bridges on the Volga, Dnieper and Don rivers. He also applied the theory of complex variables to other topics, in particular to non-linear waves. Other topics where he made substantial contributions where the theory of sets, the general theory of functions, and the theory of differential equations.

Updated 11 hours 44 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Hyperbolic geometry A triangle immersed in a saddle-shape plane, as well as two diverging parallel lines. Hyperbolic geometry , also called saddle geometry or Lobachevskian geometry , is the non-Euclidean geometry obtained by replacing the parallel postulate with the hyperbolic postulate , which states: "Given a line L and any point A not on L , at least two distinct lines exist which pass through A and are parallel to L ." In this case parallel means that the lines do not intersect L , even when extended, rather than that they are a constant distance from L This image needs to be cleaned up to conform to a higher standard of quality. ...

The father, Farkas, or Wolfgang, Bolyai, 1775–1856, b. Bolya, Transylvania, was educated in Nagyszeben from 1781 to 1796 and studied in Germany during the next three years at Jena and G¶ttingen, where he began a lifelong friendship with Carl F. Gauss. From 1804 to 1853 he was professor of mathematics at Maros V¡s¡rhely. His primary interest was in the Euclidean parallel postulate. His principal work, the Tentamen (1832–33), inspired by his mathematically gifted son J¡nos, is an attempt at a rigorous and systematic foundation of geometry (Vol. I) and of arithmetic, algebra, and analysis (Vol. II). J¡nos, or Johann, Bolyai, 1802–60, b. Koloszv¡r, Transylvania, was educated by his father in Maros V¡s¡rhely and from 1818 to 1822 in Vienna, where he received military training at the imperial engineering academy. In 1820 he began to work in a direction that ultimately led him to a non-Euclidean geometry. In 1823, after vain attempts to prove the Euclidean parallel postulate, he developed his system by assuming that a geometry could be constructed without the parallel postulate. His theory of absolute space was published as an appendix to his father's Tentamen and constituted the sole work published in his lifetime.

    Lobachevsky, Nikolai Ivanovich (1793-1856)
A Russian mathematician who was one of the pioneers of non-Euclidean geometry . He developed, independently of János Bolyai , the self-consistent system of hyperbolic geometry in which Euclid's parallel postulate is replaced by one allowing more than one parallel through the fixed point. Lobachevsky first announced his system in 1826 and subsequently wrote several expositions of it, including Geometrical Researches on the Theory of Parallels (originally published in 1840 in German). Lobachevsky studied and taught at the new University of Kazan and eventually became rector of this institution in 1826. However, for some reason, despite serving his country and university well, he fell from favor and in 1846 was relieved by the government of his posts as professor and rector.

    Lobachevsky, Nikolai Ivanovich
In Euclid's system, two parallel lines will remain equidistant from each other, whereas in Lobachevskian geometry, the two lines will approach zero in one direction and infinity in the other. In Euclidean geometry the sum of the angles of a triangle is always equal to the sum of two right angles; in Lobachevskian geometry, the sum of the angles is always less than the sum of two right angles. In Lobachevskian space, also, two geometric figures cannot have the same shape but different sizes.
Lobachevsky was born at Nizhni-Novgorod and studied at the University of Kazan, Tatarstan. He taught there from 1814, becoming professor 1822 and rector of the university 1827-47. He also took on administrative work for the government.
Lobachevsky developed non-Euclidean geometry between 1826 and 1856. He came to see that it was not contradictory to speak of a geometry in which all Euclid's postulates except the fifth held true. By including imaginary numbers, he made geometry more general, and Euclid's geometry took on the appearance of a special case of a wider system.
