Essays in Medieval Studies
page 174 The Natural Rhetoric of Ramon Llull Mark D. Johnston The Catalan theologian and philosopher Ramon Llull (1232-1316) is one of the most unusual figures of the later Middle Ages. His career is typically eccentric in the best medieval fashion. The son of a merchant nobleman on the island of Mallorca, he was raised at the court of Aragon, where he became a royal official; sometime around 1263 he experienced a profound religious awakening that left him committed to one great goal spreading the Christian Faith among nonbelievers by proving philosophically the truth of its beliefs to them. After several years of academic preparation (how and what is still unclear), he spent the rest of his long life engaged in missionary journeys to infidel lands, even reaching Armenia in 1301, visiting kings and popes in order to promote his plans, and writing nearly 300 works in Latin, Arabic, and his native Catalan. The foundation of all Llull's works is his peculiar system for philosophical argument, the so-called Great Universal Art of Finding Truth, which he claimed as a divine revelation and which is indeed so idiosyncratic that it easily appears to be a wholly original creation. The most notorious feature of this General Art is Llull's selection of nine attributes of the Christian Godhead as fundamental components of all being and knowledge. He designates these Divine Dignities, or Absolute and Relative Principles as he variously calls them, with the letters B through K of the alphabet. By arranging these letters in circular and tabular figures, Llull generates double or triple

    Llull, Ramon
Ramon Llull was born on the island of Majorca, probably in 1232. He was the only child of a wealthy French-descended merchant from Barcelona who settled on Majorca with James I of Aragon after the king conquered the island from the Moors in 1229. Llull was raised and educated at Court during the latter part of his early years, about which little is known. He was eventually appointed seneschal to the young James II of Majorca, who received the island from his father in 1253. Traditional accounts have left colourful stories about Llull's gay life at court, especially his amorous exploits and cultivation of the troubadour lyric. He married one Blanca Picany in 1257, and had two children. Sometime in 1263 or 1264, however, Llull underwent a profound religious conversion, induced by repeated visions of Christ crucified. At this time Llull is said to have conceived the three great goals of his life's work as a missionary and procelyte; these form the indispensable context for any understanding of his doctrines and activities. They were: (1) the founding of schools to teach missionaries the oriental languages, (2) the writing of a book to prove Christian doctrine, and (3) the propagation of the Faith among the infidels. Inspired by a Franciscan sermon, Llull renounced his life at court, sold all his goods, and went on pilgrimages to Rocamadour, Compostela, and other shrines.

Princeton University Press, c1985. Ramon Llull was a noble and a knight who enjoyed the good life and a reputation as a ladies man until he experienced a religious vision near his thirtieth year. After that he became a monk and wrote many works in Latin and his native Catalan before his death at the age of 92. The Book of Knighthood and Chivalry was one of the more widely read of the chivalric manuals with it being translated into most of the languages of Europe during the next 150 years. It takes its form as the story of an encounter between a young squire who gets lost while heading to court who then meets an aging knight turned hermit. Their conversation includes the older knight's image of what ideals an aspiring knight should strive to live up to and his concept of the knighting ceremony. Llull also stresses that the strength and authority of the knights must be tempered with a concern for those less able to defend themselves.

Appropriation and Misrecognition as Social Reproduction

The "Good Upbringing" of Ramon Llull's Blanquerna:
Appropriation and Misrecognition as Social Reproduction
    Mark D. Johnston
His assessment remains largely applicable today: scholarship on the organization and curricula of the studia generalia Medieval education was surely a diffuse, complex, and broad process, involving a wide range of the basic functions of conservation, reproduction, assimilation, transformation, negotiation, and conflict commonly recognized in modern social theory. Study of these functions of course depends on practical and methodological problems well known to any social historian. Because of these difficulties, comprehensive studies of medieval schools are available only for a few areas of Italy and England, while we possess scarcely a handful of articles or monographs (and often less) for entire nations elsewhere. The Iberian peninsula is one of those areas for which information about elementary or secondary education is so scarce that scholars eagerly seize on any document that seems to offer some insights. One text often cited to illustrate the schools of medieval Spain is chapter 2 from the Book of Blanquerna by the Majorcan lay theologian and philosopher Ramon Llull. As it happens, Llull's account is hardly an empirical report on practices of elementary and secondary education in his era. It does nonetheless offer a provocative contribution to discourse of and about schooling as a process of social reproduction. This essay analyzes how Ramon Llull's representation of early education especially displays the operation of two important social functions. On the one hand, his text offers numerous examples of what Pierre Bourdieu terms "misrecognition," that is, the symbolic manifestation of social power in ways that make it appear to be a force of some other kind.
