Obituary
Jacques-Louis Lions
Jacques-Louis Lions died on May 17, 2001, at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife, Andrée, his son, Pierre-Louis, daughter-in-law, Lila, and grandson, Dorian. Jacques-Louis Lions was a scientist of remarkable prescience and immense energy, with vision that extended to the development of entire areas of the mathematical sciences. He understood that mathematics could make contributions to science, and worked to see this potential realized. The founder of the French school of applied mathematics, he also had considerable influence on mathematicians and mathematical institutions worldwide. His mathematical legacy includes 20 books and nearly 600 papers. Beyond all his personal achievements, his greatest satisfaction came from the success of his son Pierre-Louis, who was awarded a Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich in 1994. Jacques-Louis Lions was born and grew up in Grasse, a charming town in the south of France known for the flowers it provides to the French perfume industry. His father was mayor of Grasse for nearly thirty years. Jacques-Louis's wife and lifelong companion Andrée was also born and grew up in the south of France; they met during World War II, when both were active in the Résistance.

Spring Semester 2004 Graduate Course Description Course Title: From electrons to nonlinear elasticity: a mathematical approach Unique Number: Time/Location of Lecture: Special format: two 2-week sessions (Feb. 4-18, March 22-April 2) Proposed timesMWF 12-2 p.m.
Instructor: Professor Pierre-Louis Lions Brief description
The course is about a rigorous mathematical approach to justify the derivation of nonlinear elasticity models from basic, microscopic models for atoms and molecules in Quantum Mechanics. The course will begin with a review of several known mathematical facts about the microscopic modles. The next topics will be (i) the optimization of geometries of molecules in the context of these models, and (ii) the so-called bulk or thermodynamical going from a molecule to a crystal limit. The course will conclude with the macroscopic limit as an attempt to derive the modeles in nonlinear elasticity. Prerequisite No permission is required from the instructor.

Spring Semester 2005 Graduate Course Description Course Title: Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations Unique Number: Time/Location of Lecture: Proposed timesTBD
Instructor: Professor Pierre-Louis Lions Brief description
In this course, we review known and discuss open results on some classical kinetic models such as the Boltzmann or the Vlasov equations. We begin with Boltzmann's equation and present the known existence results and the various open issues. In order to present proofs, we shall review various tools of independent interest such as velocity averaging, the regularity of some part of the Boltzmann collision operator and its connections with Radon transforms, the propagation of SL compactness forward and backward in time and regularization effects due to grazing collisions. We then discuss Vlasov equations such as Vlasov-Poisson and Vlasov-Maxwell systems, and explain how global weak solutions can be built using velocity averaging and (or) the theory of generalized a.e. flows. We conclude by discussing coupled Vlasov-Boltzmann systems. Prerequisite No permission is required from the instructor.

    CICIAM Prizes
CICIAM, the Committee for International Conferences on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, has established four prizes to recognize outstanding achievements in industrial and/or applied mathematics. These four CICIAM Prizes will be awarded quadrennially at the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics. They were awarded for the first time at the Opening Ceremony of ICIAM 99 in Edinburgh in July. The four prizes are:
    • the CICIAM Lagrange Prize
    • the CICIAM Collatz Prize is awarded to an individual scientist under 42 years of age for outstanding work in industrial and applied mathematics. The CICIAM Collatz Prize is funded by GAMM, the Gesellschaft fur Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik.
    • the CICIAM Pioneer Prize is awarded for pioneering work introducing applied mathematical methods and scientific computing techniques to an industrial problem area or a new scientific field of applications. This prize commemorates the spirit and impact of the American pioneers and is funded by SIAM, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
    • the CICIAM Maxwell Prize has been established to provide international recognition to mathematicians who have demonstrated originality in applied mathematics. This prize is funded by IMA, the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation.
