Current reading assignments
Read section 7.5.1 of the textbook. Unfortunately, the section refers quite a number of times to concepts that we could not cover in the course. Try to just ignore these references, especially the meaning of "integrable" and "tori" - even if you do not know these terms you will get a good idea of what is happending in this system thanks to the figures. When you are done answer the questions on the web page. The deadline is 3:59am Thursday 6/5, which is during the night between Wednesday and Thursday.

How are galaxies made?
Feature: May 1999 Galaxies have been forming since the universe was less than 10% of its current age - as supercomputer simulations predict and observations have confirmed. Ever since the 1930s when galaxies were confirmed as the fundamental building blocks of the universe, their origin and evolution have remained a central focus of physical cosmology. Speculation about the nature of galaxies dates back to the 18th century and the work of thinkers such as Thomas Wright of Durham and Immanuel Kant. Today, the prevailing theoretical ideas revolve around a 20-year-old suggestion that the origin of galaxies should be sought in quantum fluctuations generated at the time of the big bang. As with all problems in physics, the solution to the mystery of galaxy formation requires the interplay between theoretical ideas and experimental data. In this case the data are observations of galaxies stretching back over the history of the universe.
1 Looking back at the universe
The universe is thought to be between about 10 and 15 billion years old. Its actual age depends on the Hubble constant, the density of matter in the universe and the value of the cosmological constant. The expansion of the universe means that light emitted by distant galaxies is "redshifted" to longer wavelengths on its journey to the Earth:

SHOW ME PROOF
A preacher in a skeptic’s disguise
Mark Perakh
Posted on February 20, 2000 CONTENTS
INTRODUCTION The text of Fred Heeren’s book Show Me God What a Message from Space Is Telling Us About God Show Me God. The implications of that combination of title and picture are obvious: The greatest scientist of the 20 th Heeren is actually a preacher disguised as a “skeptic in search of truth.” He tries to tell the readers that scientific data not only point to God as the creator of the universe (which view cannot be either proved or disproved scientifically) but that these data lead directly to the belief in Jesus being God. Hence, Heeren is not just a believer suggesting arguments in favor of God’s existence, but rather a propagandist for his specific religious beliefs, and in that he is on a shaky ground, as he provides no substantiation for his propagandistic effort, thus devaluating his book into a piece of religious ranting feebly disguised as an objective exploration of his thesis. HEEREN PROVES GOD BY SHEER LOGIC. OR DOES HE?

CHAPTER 3 THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE In this way, Edwin Hubble worked out the distances to nine different galaxies. We now know that our galaxy is only one of some hundred thousand million that can be seen using modern telescopes, each galaxy itself containing some hundred thousand million stars. Figure 3:1 shows a picture of one spiral galaxy that is similar to what we think ours must look like to someone living in another galaxy. Figure 3:1 We live in a galaxy that is about one hundred thousand light-years across and is slowly rotating; the stars in its spiral arms orbit around its center about once every several hundred million years. Our sun is just an ordinary, average-sized, yellow star, near the inner edge of one of the spiral arms. We have certainly come a long way since Aristotle and Ptolemy, when thought that the earth was the center of the universe! ln the years following his proof of the existence of other galaxies, Rubble spent his time cataloging their distances and observing their spectra. At that time most people expected the galaxies to be moving around quite randomly, and so expected to find as many blue-shifted spectra as red-shifted ones. It was quite a surprise, therefore, to find that most galaxies appeared red-shifted: nearly all were moving away from us! More surprising still was the finding that Hubble published in 19 even the size of a galaxy’s red shift is not random, but is directly proportional to the galaxy’s distance from us. Or, in other words, the farther a galaxy is, the faster it is moving away! And that meant that the universe could not be static, as everyone previously had thought, is in fact expanding; the distance between the different galaxies is changin

Lev Davidovich Landau
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Lev D. Landau Lev Davidovich Landau January 22 April 1 ) was a prominent Soviet physicist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics whose broad field of work included the theory of superconductivity and superfluidity quantum electrodynamics nuclear physics and particle physics . He developed the theory of second order phase transitions . Among many physical effects named after Landau are Landau pole and Landau damping . He co-authored, with Evgenii Lifschitz , a beloved series of physics texts which are still widely used as of 2005.

Biography
“In fact, usually it was sufficient for him to know just the guiding ideas of a study in order to reproduce all its findings.”
Lev Davidovich Landau (Ле́в Дави́дович Ланда́у) was born on 22nd January 1908 in Baku, in the family of a petroleum engineer who worked on the Baku oil fields. His mother was a physician and at one time had engaged in scientific work on physiology. Recognized early as a child prodigy , Landau completed his school course at the age of 13. Even then he already was attracted by the exact sciences, and his mathematical ability manifested itself very early. He studied mathematical analysis on his own and later he used to say he hardly remembered a time when he did not know differentiation and integration.
