Lie, Marius Sophus (1842-1899)
A Norwegian mathematician who, along with his close friend Felix Klein , introduced group theory into geometry and used it to classify geometries. Lie discovered the contact transformation , which maps curves into surfaces (1870), and Lie groups , which use continuous or infinitesimal transformations. He used these groups to classify partial differential equations , making the traditional methods of solution all reduce to a single principle. Lie groups also provided a basis for the growth of modern topology . See also Lie algebra

Biographical Note
George Bruce Halsted (1853-1922) was a member of the University of Texas at Austin Department of Pure and Applied Mathematics (1884-1903) where he taught noted mathematician R. L. Moore and L. E. Dickson among other students. He explored the foundations of geometry and introduced Non-Euclidean geometry into the United States through his own work and his many important translations. He was later at St. John's College, Annapolis; Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio (1903-1906); and the Colorado State College of Education, Greeley (1906-1914). Halsted was a fourth generation Princeton graduate, earning his Bachelor's degree in 1875 and his Master's in 1878. He went on to Johns Hopkins University where he was J. J. Sylvester's first student, receiving his Ph.D. in 1879. After graduation, Halsted served as an instructor in mathematics at Princeton until beginning his post at the University of Texas at Austin in 1884.

Marius Sophus Lie (December 17, 1842 - February 18, 1899) was a (A Scandinavian language that is spoken in Norway) Norwegian -born (A person skilled in mathematics) mathematician who largely created the theory of continuous symmetry, and applied it to the study of geometric structures and (An equation containing differentials of a function) differential equations . Lie's principal tool, and one of his greatest achievements, was the discovery that continuous (Click link for more info and facts about transformation groups) transformation groups (now called (Click link for more info and facts about Lie group) Lie group s) could be better understood by "linearizing" them, and studying the corresponding generating (Click link for more info and facts about vector field) vector field s (the so-called (Click link for more info and facts about infinitesimal generator) infinitesimal generator s). The generators obey a linearized version of the group law called the commutator bracket, and have the structure of what we today, in honour of Lie, call a (Click link for more info and facts about Lie algebra) Lie algebra

The collected works of Sophus Lie.
On this topic Heegaard writes: ``I had received a call to take part in the publication of Sophus Lie's collected works. Already before the world war there had been plans for such an edition, in six volumes plus a seventh volume of `Nachlass'. Now that the first world war was over, the matter was considered again. Professor Engel already had most of the manuscript ready. He had worked out most of the annotations. There were only a couple of the geometric papers, especially the first one, not easily accessible, that he had not considered. The Norwegian Research Foundation promised to give the necessary, considerable, financial support, but then a Norwegian had to join as a coeditor. In a way I was not particularly keen on the idea. The work would take me a long time since I had not earlier occupied myself with the work of Sophus Lie, and I would thereby be hindered in my plans to resume the investigations in my dissertation. But in this way the appearance of the edition would depend upon my consent, and as a professor of geometry, the very subject in which Sophus Lie had worked, I felt morally obligated to support the publication. I visited several times with Professor Engel in Giessen Heegaard does not indicate when the above took place, but according to the obituary, [

Seminar Sophus Lie
Seminar Sophus Lie is a joint Seminar of a group of German mathematicians interested in the theory of Lie groups and their wider horizon. It was founded around 1989-90 when, during the Volkskammer Government of the German Democratic Republic in 1989, open contacts between mathematicians in East- and Westgermany became a reality for the first time since 1961. Several mathematicians located at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, the University of Erlangen, the University of Greifswald, and the University of Leipzig organized informally the Seminar with financial support by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and met for the first seminar session at the University of Leipzig in January 1991. The Seminar meets once a semester since that time. Later on groups at the University of Bielefeld, the University of Clausthal, and the University of Agriculture in Wien (Vienna, Austria) joined the seminar. Meetings were held in
