Lexell, Comet (D/1770 L1)
A long-period comet discovered on Jun. 14, 1770, by Charles Messier , but named for the Swedish astronomer Anders Johann Lexell (1740-1784) who first calculated its orbit. Several gravitational encounters with Jupiter have changed the comet’s orbit so that it no longer comes close enough to Earth to be seen and it may even have been ejected from the Solar System altogether.

Anders Lexell, among others (including Herschel), calculates the orbit of the moving body discovered by Herschel, establishing that it is a new planet. Herschel originally proposes the name Georgium Sidus for the new planet (after England's King George III), but the international astronomical community, maintaining the old tradition of naming planets after the gods of Antiquity, settles on the name Uranus. See also 1846 Astronomy Charles Messier publishes in Connaissance des temps for 1784 (published in 1781 despite the date) his final catalog, which now contains more than 100 star clusters and nebulae that might be mistaken for comets.
