To objectively evaluate complex historical processes, a historian must proceed from solid, reliable facts. Any science, including history, begins with a painstaking analysis of available factual data. Even the ancients had a general idea of this basic truth. Yet history has its own peculiarities. Whereas the exact sciences, especially those of an applied and technical nature, largely depend on experiments without which it would be extremely difficult or downright impossible to make any substantiated generalizations, in the case of history a similar function is reserved for the exploration of historical sources. They represent the groundwork and framework of history, which would be unthinkable without them. Unlike a physicist with his experiments, a historian has no possibility to conduct even an imaginary experiment of reviving, say, Bohdan Khmelnytsky to ask him what really happened in the 17th century.

HOME DISINFORMATION WALLOWING Marco Levytsky Ukrainian News March 1993 Staged for Nazi propaganda These women were not raped, nor beaten, but "wallowed in the gutter" — a practice which originated in medieval England to publicly humiliate prostitutes, says Dragan. The action was staged by the Nazis for the purpose of shooting a newsreel, which is now available at the State Central Archives in Moscow and the U.S. National Archives in Washington. The photograph being discussed in the Ukrainian News article below can be examined in any of three sizes by clicking on any of the three thumbnail images which appear on the WALLOWING page whose link can be seen at the very top and very bottom of the present page, or else by clicking on any of the following three links, which will take the user to images differing only in size:

Ukrainian News learns that photo actually records event staged for Nazi propaganda
By Marco Levytsky

The photograph above a defamatory caption that insinuates Ukrainians have traditions of atrocity against Jews, published in the February 22 issue of TIME magazine, not only does not depict a rape — as TIME declares — but an event that was staged for a Nazi propaganda newsreel

RUSSIAN FEDERATION
EXECUTIVE BRANCH
PRESIDENCY Yel'tsin suggests successor, Yastrzhembsky takes it back During his recent trip to Birmingham, England for the G-8 summit, President Yel'tsin reportedly introduced Dmitri Ayatskov, governor of Saratov, to President Clinton as "the future President of Russia." (ITAR-TASS, 19 May 98; NEXIS) Ayatskov later insisted that Yel'tsin was just joking, as did presidential spokesman Sergei Yastrzhembsky, who suggested that one should take Yel'tsin's statement "with a fair measure of ... healthy humor." (Ekho Moskvy, 18 May 98; FBIS-SOV-98-139) Yastrzhembsky was questioned on the possibility of a third Yel'tsin presidency and, in particular, why the text of the president's comments on the subject during his Internet chat appear in the English-language version, but not the Russian. Explaining the omission in the Russian text as "a technical slip-up," Yastrzhembsky claimed that since Yel'tsin himself did not rule out a run at a third term, he would not rule it out either. Borodin dismissal reversed According to initial press reports, Kremlin business manager Pavel Borodin
