MFA of Ukraine Pictorial Art Announcements Fine arts development in Ukraine harks back to the dawn of history. Archeological finds, especially dated to the period of Scythian and Trypilia cultures, are notable for proficiency of techniques and prove high artistic level of the artifacts by the ancestors of the present-day Ukrainians. Specimens of the art of the Kyivan Rus that had been developing within the general line of the medieval European culture linked with the Church and Christianity reached our eyes in a more complete form. The leading genres of the imitative art of the Rus were mosaic, fresco, and icon and book miniature paintings. The extant world of old art as integral assembly of architecture, decorative and applied artworks is real at St. Sophia Cathedral of Kyiv where samples of secular painting of the 11th century have preserved unique for the whole Europe. However, until the 17th century icons remained the principal pieces of art in Ukraine The intermediary between the icon and secular portrait paintings were so-called parsuny, full-face portraits made using icon-painting techniques. Well-to-do members of the Cossack chieftains’ families in great number ordered their portraits to be made. It is for the second half of the 18th century that the peak of the secular portrait painting fell on in the full sense of the term. At the same time, the tendency is evident of the gifted youth from Ukraine departing to St. Petersburg to the Academy of Art. Thus, the most famous artists of Russia of those days were Dmytro Levytsky from Kyiv and Volodymyr Borovykovsky from Myrhorod. Of the Ukrainian origin was also Anton Losenko, the creator of the historical style of the Russian academic art.

MFA of Ukraine Literature Announcements The history of Ukrainian written language is thousand-years long. Its origin is ascribed to the times of the Kyivan Rus, but even before the 9th century A.D., the ancestors of Ukrainians had developed an advanced spoken language tradition. The chronicles Account of Bygone Years (Povist' vremennykh lit) is an outstanding memorial that is also a source of historical information, a collection of epic songs, legends and narrations of the Kyivan state epoch. The poetic masterpiece of the ancient literature is Slovo o polku Igorevim. This heroic epic had imbibed the best samples of folklore and has become the common property and pride of the entire Slavic people. Polemical works of Ivan Vyshensky, Meletiy Smotrytsky, Feofan Prokopovych and others is a distinctive phenomenon of the writings of the Middle Ages. The high water mark of Ukrainian literature of the Baroque period is the writings of Hryhory Skovoroda, 1722-1794), a poet and philosopher. This ‘Ukrainian Socrates’ traveled throughout Ukraine and countries of the Central Europe to get to know the people. Permeating his philosophy is the issue of happiness being treated by him through the revelation of the divine inspiration of a human being, and disclosure of the God endowed talent by finding one’s own true vocation. The words of this seeker of truth “The world kept trying to capture me, but failed” are engraved on his tomb and became further evidence of his preference for spiritual life over vanity and idleness of the world.

Culture Gallery back CHURCH: KYIV AND MOSCOW CHURCHES: "TOGETHER FOREVER" By Klara Gudzyk, The Day, The Day Weekly Digest,
Kyiv, Ukraine, January 27, 2004 The Council [Treaty] of Pereyaslav determined Ukrainian nation's history for several centuries, and its impact remains. It also exerted a fatal influence on the political and social order, culture, education, and last but not least, on religious life, the Orthodox Church of what was then known as Little Russia. The treaty with Moscow eventually resulted in a Church union with all its consequences. Some historians hold that Bohdan Khmelnytsky from the outset of talks with Moscow was willing to join the Ukrainian Church to the Moscow Patriarchate, although the Ukrainian Church had since AD 988 remained under the Constantinople See. And that, prior to the Council of Pereyaslav, he wrote to Patriarch Nikon, addressing him as the "Supreme Shepherd." However , the accords made in the spring of 1654 had no clause on the subordination of the Kyiv Diocese to the Patriarch of Moscow . It was only after the Hetman' s death that the Moscow government claimed the clause was there and proceeded to wage a consistent, persistent, and often treacherous policy aimed at absorbing the Kyiv metropolis, relying on the principle of the end justifies the means. The Moscow tsar and the Russian Church were eager to get hold of the ancient Kyiv Diocese, knowing that Christianity had spread over all of Eastern Europe through it, with the shining Hagia Sophia of Kyiv and saints of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), numerous monasteries, theological institutions, learned clergy, and large pious congregations.

Culture Cinema The directing career of Oleksandr Dovzhenko was one of the landmarks in twentieth century world cinematography. His works have entered the golden heritage of the Ukrainian and world cinema. In 1958 at the International exhibition in Brussel his film Earth (1930) has been recognized as one of the best twelve films of all times and nations. From the 1960s to the 1990s, the Ukrainian schools of poetic, historical, and documentary films were the focus of attention. Films by Ukrainian directors have enjoyed success at international festivals and contests. Many awards of international prestige were won by Serhiy Paradzhanov's film, Shadows of Ancestors Forgotten, winning a place among the classics of the Ukrainian cinema (alongside with Babylon XX by Ivan Mykolaichuk, and the Petition Lost by B. Ivchenko). In the 1960s, this film won first prize at the International Cinema Festival in Mar del Plata (Argentine), the Cup of the Festival of Festivals in Rome, award of the British Academy of Film and Television, Gold Prize in Thessalonike (Greece). The film Swan Lake: The Zone (by Paradzhanov and Yury Illienko, 1990) was the first in the history of Ukrainian film to win the grand prix of the Cannes film festival. New feature and documentary films of the time of independence show the pages of the Ukrainian history, culture, national traditions, forgotten or hidden before. The best films are widely recognized by international audience. Such films as Fuzhou by Yury Illienko, Asihenic Syndrome by Kira Muratova, and The Voice of Crass by N. Motuzko have gained great popularity at film festivals in Cannes, Rotterdam, and Berlin. The film The Friend of the Deceased by V. Kryshtofovych has been of great success in the prestigious Two Weeks of a Film Director program in Cannes. The Ukrainian film The Derelict was awarded the grand prix at the 36th San Remo Film Festival.

    CULTURE
    National traditions and rituals
Ukrainian national traditions, customs, and oral folk literature reflect Old Ukrainian pre-Christian, and Christian cultures. The rituals derive from the folk calendar, religious celebrations like Christmas, Easter and Whitsuntide, Ivana Kupala (St.John's Eve), New Year, and the autumn folk festivals dedicated to the end of the agricultural work.
Ukrainians have typical wedding habits, family traditions connected with crafts and jobs (the first day of sowing, beginning of the harvest), along with traditional symbols (straw didukh, decorated pysanka Easter eggs, holy water, and traditional dishes like kutia (boiled wheat with honey and poppy seed), paskha Easter bread, varenyky (something like ravioli), and pancakes. The rituals include folk dances, carols, fortune-telling, and blessing with water.
    Literature
The literature of Kyivan Rus' is represented by numerous Old Churtch Slavonic documents. About 1500 manuscripts have been found so far, among them wellknown autobiographies of the first prelates of Rus', Olha and Volodymyr; biographies of the great martyrs Borys and Hlib; the first collection of laws, the Ruska Pravda; historical chronicle Povist' vrem'ianykh lit (Tale of Bygone Years); and Slovo o polku Ihorevim (Lay of the Host of Ihor). The Middle Ages also left a legacy of hundreds of dumy (historical songs), lyrical folk poetry, and tales.
The first printings shops appeared in the sixteenth century and during the next two centuries thirteen printing houses were established in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Lviv, Lutsk, Kremenets, Uman, etc. The first Ukrainian newspaper Gazette de Leopol was first published in 1776.

Kobzari Kobzars (kobzari). Wandering folk bards who performed a large repertoire of epic-historical, religious, and folk songs while playing a kobza or bandura . Kobzars first emerged in Kyivan-Rus and were popular by the 15th century. Some (e.g., Churylo and Tarashko) performed at Polish royal courts. They lived at the Zaporozhian Sich and were esteemed by the kozaks , whom they frequently accompanied on various campaigns against the Turks, Tatars, and Poles. The epic songs they performed [ duma ] served to raise the moral of the Kozak army in times of war, and some (e.g., P. Skryaha, V. Varchenko, and Mykhajlo 'Sokovy's son-in-law') were even beheaded by the Poles for performing dumas that incited popular revolts.
