Some of his major contributions were in the study of Fourier transforms complex analysis , non-linear differential equations number theory , and signal processing . He worked closely with Norbert Wiener in his early career. He joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in . In , he was awarded the Bôcher Memorial Prize of the American Mathematical Society . In 1974 he published a paper proving that more of a third of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function lie on the critical line, a result later improved to two fifths by Conrey. His death in was caused by a brain tumor

School/College: Designation: Department Major: Economics Degrees Offered: M.A., M.S., Ph.D. Faculty: Professors West (chair), Andreoni, Brock, Che, David, Deneckere, Durlauf, Hansen, Haveman, Hester, Kennan, Lipman, Lyall, Manuelli, Nichols, Samuelson, Scholz, Staiger, Taylor, Walker, Wolfe; Associate Professors Kitamura, Neal; Assistant Professors Haile, Levinson, Norman, Sandholm, Severinov, Tripathi, Wallace The graduate program in economics offers a firm grounding in the theory and tools of economics as well as in a variety of fields of specialization. Facilities within the department include faculty and student offices, a library of core materials, and a computer center. The size of the department, the breadth of specialties represented among the faculty, the abundance of research workshops and research facilities, and the related programs of other university departments combine to provide an unusually supportive atmosphere for study and research. Students are encouraged to work together. Study groups for course work and preliminary examinations are standard. The department currently has more than 30 faculty members and more than 110 graduate students. All students are assigned desk space. The department and students sponsor social events throughout the year. A graduate adviser is on staff to help students with problems and questions. Each student is also assigned a faculty adviser. The primary focus of the Department of Economics is on the doctoral degree. Although a master's degree is offered officially, students are not admitted for a terminal master's degree.

    -Theorems for Quotients of Zeta-Functions at Combinations of Points Norman Levinson Theorem A. Let q O and r O be integers. Let s = + it, let (s) be the Riemann zetafunction, let G o (s) = 1, and G q (s) = (2qs - 2q + 1), q 1 H r (s) = (s) ((2r + 1)s - 2r) and let F(s) = G q (s)/H r (s). Then as t q+r+1 r+1 is Euler's constant. Stronger results such as proved in [1] are valid, and in particular q and r can be allowed to increase with t as in [1]. Results involving the real part of the sum of the factors of G q and of the reciprocals of the factors of H r can be proved much as in [3].

    THE TOEPLITZ METHOD
The Toeplitz method of spectral factorization is based on special properties of Toeplitz matrices In this chapter we introduce the Toeplitz matrix to perform spectral factorization. In later chapters we will refer back several times to the algebra described here. When one desires to predict a time series, one can do this with a so-called prediction filter. This filter is found as the solution to Toeplitz simultaneous equations. Norman Levinson, in his explanatory appendix of Norbert Wiener's Time Series, first introduced the Toeplitz matrix to engineers; however, it had been widely known and used previously in the field of econometrics. It is only natural that it should appear first in economics because there the data are observed at discrete time points, whereas in engineering the idea of discretized time was rather artificial until the advent of digital computers. The need for prediction in economics is obvious. In seismology, it is not the prediction itself but the error in prediction which is of interest. Reflection seismograms are used in petroleum exploration. Ideally, the situation is like radar where the delay time is in direct proportion to physical distance. This is the case for the so-called primary reflections. A serious practical complication arises in shallow seas where large acoustic waves bounce back and forth between the sea surface and the sea floor. These are called

In 1960, the University of Wisconsin granted a fellowship to Dr. Robinson to work in Uppsala, Sweden under Professor Herman Wold and Professor Harold Cramer, earlier developers of time series analysis. Dr. Robinson stayed in Sweden from 1960 to 1964 as Deputy Professor of Statistics at Uppsala University. With the advent of transistorized computers in the 1960s, digital methods became economically feasible for use in oil exploration. Introduction to Algebraic Topology
    Instructor: Jonathan Simon
    Time: 9:30 MWF
Place: 118 MLH Text: Massey, A Basic Course in Algebraic Topology and Algebraic Topology by Hatcher The course has three parts, corresponding to text chapters 1 (2-Dimensional Surfaces), 2-5 (Fundamental Group and Covering Spaces), and 6-9 (Homology). In all parts, there is a recurring theme of understanding interesting/important/complicated spaces by building them out of simple pieces.
The 2-dimensional manifolds we study in Part 1 provide examples we use throughout the course. While the course includes some very rich and beautiful theory, we will balance that with lots of examples, calculations, and applications.
There is a lot of material in the text, so we may occasionally skip/highlight some portions. Students preparing for the Ph.D. Comp in Topology should study all the above chapters, and perhaps some additional material I will suggest during the course.
We likely will have weekly assigned homework, one or two evening midterm exams, and a comprehensive final during Exam week.
