L.A. Critics Drop Awards Over 'Screeners'
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Film Critics Association has canceled its 2003 awards to protest an industry ban on sending special DVDs and videos to award voters.
The association voted Saturday not to hand out the awards, which can boost interest in a film and predict its Oscar chances. Members said they would consider resuming the awards if the studios again hand out videos and DVDs of new films.
The major studios and their trade group, the Motion Picture Association of America, agreed in September to stop sending "screener" copies to the 5,600 Academy Awards voters and other groups that hand out awards, including the Los Angeles Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics.
The studios hoped to prevent piracy, but the decision angered supporters of smaller movies who say voters may miss independent pictures if they have to see them at screenings in theaters. Opponents of the ban say screener distribution has led to several Academy Awards for smaller films, including best actress wins for Halle Berry in 2001's "Monster's Ball" and Hilary Swank in 1999's "Boys Don't Cry."
Ella Taylor, a critic for the LA Weekly, suggested the cancellation and said she hoped other critics groups also would withhold awards. She said there were many films released toward the end of the year, and that voters may not be able to see them all without screeners.

Once, practicing law was considered a worthy, honorable career. No longer. In a bloated legal system where technicalities count more than justice, and where wealth and fame can buy freedom, lawyers have become the parasites who feed off the desiccated remains of human suffering. To be sure, there are some who still enter the profession with the best of motives, but they are in the minority. Law is not about idealism; it's about money and back-room deals. As common as lawyer-bashing has become during the 1980s and 1990s, the most vicious cinematic attack on the profession occurred in 1979, when director Norman Jewison, writer Barry Levinson, and actor Al Pacino combined their talents to rake law and order across the coals in

    ACTOR'S WORKSHOP

The Santa Barbara Actors Theatre beginning Actors Workshop usually meets every Monday evening. The advanced class meets every Wednesday evening. The Teenage Workshop meets every Thursday evening. All participants have the opportunity to perform at least once during the course of each evening's workshop. Please call 212-737-4168 for times and places. Participants learn by doing. The working atmosphere of the professional theatre and film is duplicated: actors are cast by the director in scenes from classic and modern plays and films; particular emphasis is put on understanding the script's text and subtext, respecting the author's intention, and learning how to prepare truthfully. The Beginning Workshop, which meets Mondays, is open to anyone who is interested in learning about the process of acting. Absolutely no previous experience is required. Participants in this workshop who show exceptional ability may eventually be invited to join the Advanced Workshop which meets every Wednesday. The fee for the Beginning Workshop and the Teenage Workshop is $20 per session, or $80 per month. There is a one- time book fee of $20. The Advanced Workshop, which meets Wednesday, is only open to those who have had previous experience in community, university and professional theatre, or have studied with recognized teachers. The workshop is particularly designed for working actors who wish to keep in shape between jobs. The fee is $25 per session or $100 per month. There is a one-time book fee of $20.
