"According to HealthGrades, the health-care-rating organization that conducted the study, needless deaths averaged 195,000 a year in 2000, 2001, and 2002. 'That's the equivalent of 390 jumbo jets full of people dying each year,' says Dr. Samantha Collier, vice president of medical affairs." - Newsweek, August 2, 2004
"The study by Health Grades Inc., a health-care consulting firm in Colorado that rates hospitals, estimated that medical errors in U.S. hospitals contributed to almost 600,000 patient deaths over the past three years, double the number if deaths from a study published in 2000 by the Institute of Medicine."- The Wall Street Journal, July 27, 2004

Norman Levinson
Norman Levinson August 11 October 10 ) was an American mathematician . Some of his major contributions were in the study of Fourier transforms complex analysis , non-linear differential equations number theory , and signal processing . He worked closely with Norbert Wiener in his early career. He joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in . In , he was awarded the of the American Mathematical Society . In 1974 he published a paper proving that more of a third of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function lie on the critical line, a result later improved to two fifths by Conrey. His death in was caused by a brain tumor He received both his bachelor's degree and his master's degree in electrical engineering from MIT in , where he had studied under Norbert Wiener and took almost all of the graduate-level courses in mathematics. He received the MIT

This is the story of Charles Revson (1906-1975), the insecure kid from a cold-water flat in Manchester, New Hampshire, who never went to college but founded Revlon. He went from putting the nail polish on his own nails (to test it) and criss-crossing the country by rail (to sell it) to, ultimately, a $5,000-a-day New York lifestyle complete with a 257-foot yacht, the Ultima II, whose gas tank cost $20,000 to fill and whose staterooms Revson liked to keep chilly enough, in the heat of the Caribbean, to require toasty electric blankets. I loved writing this book, not least my three days on that yacht. It's out of print, but below you can read the first chapter. A.T.

Charles Revson is on the phone with the assistant manager of Campbell's funeral parlor, trying to arrange for the burial of Norman Norell, namesake of a major Revlon perfume. He is used to dealing with the manager at Camp-bell's, not the assistant manager, but the manager has stepped out. "This is Charles Revson," he says. "Do you know who I am?" The man apologizes. "Charles Revson, Charles Revson don't you know who I am?" Sorry. "Where's your boss?" He stepped out. Revson tries another tack: "Mr. Norman Norell. Do you know who

Enders Robinson
By ROBERT DEAN CLARK
Assistant Editor
The digital revolution that overhauled geophysical exploration in the 1960s was born about 15 years earlier somewhere on a Massachusetts thoroughfare, about as far from the Oil Patch - politically and attitudinally as well as geographically - as it is possible to stray.
Neither of the principals, Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty members G. P. Wadsworth and P. M. Hurley, was an explorationist. The former was a mathematician and considered something of a curiosity by his peers because his interests centered on the applied, not the theoretical, branch of the discipline. A current Wadsworth project was to adapt the breakthrough but forbiddingly difficult time series equations of celebrated MIT colleague Norbert Wiener to weather forecasting.
Wadsworth and Hurley regularly rode to the campus together and often discussed their work. One morning Hurley, a professor of geology, made the mental connection that the barogram traces on Wadsworth's meteorological data wiggled just like seismic traces. Was there a possibility that Wiener's work could become an interpretive aid in seismology? The men discussed the idea at greater length and decided it had enough merit to be investigated by one of Wadsworth's research assistants. By the fall of 1950, the stage was set for 20-year-old Enders Robinson to make his dramatic, turning-point entrance into exploration.

40. Film Synopsis
by renowned directors norman Jewison, Barry levinson, Garry Marshall, BARRY levinson ON THE FUTURE IN THE 20TH CENTURY YESTERDAY S TOMORROWS
http://www.levinson.com/lf/century/
SHOWTIME and Touchstone Television have joined forces with six of Hollywood's top filmmakers to explore important issues of the millennium. IN THE 20 TH CENTURY features six feature-length documentaries by renowned directors Norman Jewison, Barry Levinson, Garry Marshall, Gregory Nava, Robert Townsend and Robert Zemeckis. The films will air on a monthly basis beginning in June 1999. As the millennium approaches, this series offers an entertaining and provocative look at the last century. Each director probes a personally compelling aspect of our political, social and cultural landscape, tracing its impact and its evolution. Among the subjects explored are comedy (JEWISON), the future (LEVINSON), marriage (MARSHALL), the American dream (NAVA), sex (TOWNSEND) and smoking, drinking and drugging (ZEMECKIS). Using archival footage, interviews with experts and newly-shot footage, these films offer a unique perspective on the past 100 years. Working in the documentary format for the first time, each director uses his distinct point of view in a unique form of storytelling to weave individual tapestries of society and the influences that have shaped it. The IN THE 20 TH CENTURY schedule is as follows: June Garry Marshall on Marriage in the 20th Century: In Search of the Happy Ending July Robert Townsend on Sex in the 20th Century: From Behind Closed Doors August Barry Levinson on the Future in the 20th Century: Yesterday's Tomorrows September Robert Zemeckis on Smoking, Drinking and Drugging in the 20th Century: The Pursuit of Happiness
