From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Norman Levinson August 11 October 10 ) was an American mathematician . Some of his major contributions were in the study of Fourier transforms complex analysis , non-linear differential equations number theory , and signal processing . He worked closely with Norbert Wiener in his early career. He joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in . In , he was awarded the B´cher Memorial Prize of the American Mathematical Society . In 1974 he published a paper proving that more of a third of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function lie on the critical line, a result later improved to two fifths by Conrey. His death in was caused by a brain tumor He received both his bachelor's degree and his master's degree in electrical engineering from MIT in , where he had studied under Norbert Wiener and took almost all of the graduate-level courses in mathematics. He received the MIT Redfield Proctor Traveling Fellowship to study at the University of Cambridge , with the assurance that MIT would reward him with a PhD upon his return regardless of whatever he produced at Cambridge. Within the first four months in Cambridge, he had already produced two papers. In

Norman Levinson 's family were very poor Russian Jewish immigrants to the United States. Norman, born in Lynn, Massachusetts just before World War I, was the son of a shoe factory worker there, who earned three dollars a week and whose education consisted of attending a yeshiva for a few years. Norman's mother was illiterate but, despite the poverty, she managed to feed Norman and his sister Pauline. Zipporah (Fagi) Levinson, Norman's wife, wrote in [5]:- Relatives and friends would give Norman's mother worn hand-me-down clothes. She would take them apart, and using the undersides which didn't show any wear, would make clothes for her children and husband. Despite a childhood of desperate poverty, and an education that consisted of attending rundown vocation schools, Norman said of his childhood:- We were very poor, but we didn't think of ourselves as poor.

    Levinson recursion
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Levinson recursion is a mathematical procedure which recursively calculates the solution to a Toeplitz matrix It was proposed by Norman Levinson in , improved by Durbin in , and given a matrix formulation requiring n multiplications by W. F. Trench in . S. Zohar improved Trench's algorithm in , requiring only n multiplications. In most applications where Toeplitz matrices appear, we are dealing with a problem such as where is an Toeplitz matrix and and are vectors. The problem is to solve when and are known. For the solution, straightforward application of Gaussian elimination is rather inefficient, with complexity, O n , since it does not employ the strong structures present in the Toeplitz system. A first improvement to Gaussian elimination is the Levinson recursion which can be applied to symmetric Toeplitz systems. To illustrate the basics of the Levinson algorithm, first define the principal sub-matrix T p as the upper left block of . Further, assume that we have the order
