John Gould's Tropical Birds
Humming Bird - Buff Breasted Leucippus
Leucippus fallax Venezuela $99 - order #8314 Information
In his pursuit of new and different birds, John Gould traveled to Asia, Australia and the East Indies. His series of natural history plates is considered by many as the finest works of bird illustrations ever presented.
Making these prints was technically and artistically demanding. Gould's original sketches were transferred to stone with special pencils or chalk. They were printed by hand from the stones. Each print was hand-colored, and issued in small sets to subscribers only. As the prints were very expensive only a few hundred of the wealthiest people and institutions could afford them, accounting for their rarity today. Date This print is from a limited edition facsimile of the best of John Gould's tropical birds printed in Germany in 1955 Print method Lithograph with shellac finishing. Blank on reverse.

Like many of the pre-Socratic natural philosophers, the Atomists built metaphysical theories that modern science would show were true to a certain extent. In the Atomists' case, their theories have undergone compartively minor changes when compared to modern atomic theory. Additionally, their theories applied to social theory would lead to social atomism per Hobbes and Locke, which would eventually lead to the modern discipline of psychology. The links on this site will take you to pages describing the prevailing intellectual winds at the time of the Atomists ( ), then focus on the two, primary creators/representatives of this view: Leucippus and his student, Democritus . Their atomic theory will be explained in the section titled then a summary of Christian interaction with this philosophy will be given in Finally, a list of Resources on atomism available on the Internet is given for further reading.

Recent Up a category Anaxagoras Anaxagoras is credited with bringing philosophy, the study of knowledge, to Athens when he moved there in 480 B.C. Anaximander Anaximander may have written the first philosophical treatise in Greece and was a student or companion of Thales. Fragments and passages about him by other ancient writers. Pre-Socratic Philosophers Early natural philosophy didn't spring up in a vcacuum but borrowed from the mythographers. Anaximenes Anaximenes was a pupil of Anaximander who believed the underlying principle or arche was air and distinguished planets from stars.

PHI 254: ANCIENT AND MEDIAEVAL PHILOSOPHY Waggle Section Ancient Atomists: Leucippus and Democritus With these philosophers, we finally have a coherent and ingenious response to Parmenides challenge to knowledge of sense-perception.  The upshot of the atomist position leads to an incredible advance in our understanding of the physical world and the constituents of knowledge.  What more, by eliminating final causation from their physical theories, the ancient atomists break from the mystic tradition carried over into philosophy, and they establish the study of ethics as a separate sub-field of philosophy independent from religion.  This makes them far closer to our understanding of ethics than anything we have seen previously. Little is known of Leucippus, and we have only one sentence of his work The Great World System that has come down to us.  Even in antiquity, he appears to be a shadowy figure.  Leucippus was eclipsed by his pupil, Democritus, and most of what we will be doing will focus on Democritus.   Democritus was a very prolific writer.  Over 70 works are attributed to him.  He is a contemporary of Socrates, and was in Athens when Socrates is active. Democritus is said to have constructed a systematic and comprehensive theory of nature and of the origin of things that was difficult even for the ancients to distinguish from Leucippus.  It is Aristotle who grasped the significance of the atomist work.

Leucippus
This article is about the philosopher. There was also a Greek mythological Leucippus (mythology)
Leucippus or Leukippos 5th century BC ) was the originator of atomism , the philosophical belief that everything is composed entirely of various imperishable, indivisible elements called atoms . There are no existing writings which we can attribute to Leucippus, since his writings seem to have been enfolded into the work of his famous student Democritus q.v. for more on atomism). In fact, it is virtually impossible to identify any views about which Democritus and Leucippus disagreed. Leucippus was born at Miletus (or some said Elea, for his philosophy is associated with the Eleatic philosophers ), a contemporary of Zeno Empedocles and Anaxagoras of the Ionian school of philosophy. His fame was so completely overshadowed by that of Democritus, who systematized his views on atoms, that Epicurus doubted his very existence, according to Diogenes Laertius x. 7. But Aristotle and Theophrastus expressly credit him with the invention of Atomism. w('leucippus') Word Browser lincoln

CULTURE Miletus' Cultural Leadership Miletus became an important Ionian center of arts, science, and culture. The historians Anaximander, Aneximenes, the natural philosopher Thales (mathematician, physicist, and also a merchant), the georgraphers Kadmos and Hecataeus were all contemporaries living in Miletus. DIDYMA (Didim) Didyma (nearby Didim, in the Aegean region of Turkey ) was a cult center for the city of Miletos . It is located in the present day village of Yeniköy, about fifteen kilometers from the site of Miletos . In ancient times, it was connected to its mother city by a sacred road that had statues located on either side of it. The Didymaion, the temple to Apollo and its oracle at Didyma, was of considerable repute among the ancients. German archaeologists excavating at the site have shown that the earliest sanctuary here was built in the 8th century B.C. and that it was enlarged into an enormous temple around 560 B.C. After their bloody suppression of the Ionian rebellion, the Persians sacked and laid waste to Miletos (which they regarded as the instigator) and the Didymaion in 494 B.C. It was during this assault that the temple's cult statue of

Democritus THE ATOMISTS LEUCIPPAS ( fl DEMOCRITUS (460- ) Leucippas may have come from Miletus; however, little is known about him. He is said to have written two books, On Mind and The Great World System . He is accepted as being the first to devise the theory of atoms and the void (atomism). Democritus came from Abdera , in Thrace in Northern Greece, and did indeed associate with Leucippas. He traveled a great deal. He wrote many works (at least seventy) on varied subjects, including The Little World System , in homage to his teacher. What Is and What Is Not 1. 'Leucippus and his associate Democritus declare the full and the empty [void] to be the elements, calling the former "what is" and the other "what is not". Of these the one, "what is", is full and solid, the other, "what is not", is empty [void] and rare. (This is why they say that what is is no more than what is not, because the void is no less than body is.) These are the material causes of existing things....' (Aristotle, Metaphysics The Need for a Void Atoms/Thing and the Void/Nothing 1. 'Democritus believes that the nature of the eternal things is small beings unlimited in multitude. As a place for these he hypothesizes something else, unlimited in size, and he calls the place by the names "void", "nothing" and "unlimited" [of "infinite"] and he calls each of the substances "thing" and "compact" and "what is". He holds that the substances are so small that they escape our senses." (Aristotle
