Encyclopedia - Leucippus
Leucippus was the originator of atomism[?] (in the 5th century), the philosophical belief that everything is composed entirely of various imperishable, indivisible elements called atoms There are no existing writings which we can attribute entirely to Leucippus, since his writings seem to have been enfolded into the work of his famous student Democritus (see for more on atomism). In fact, it is virtually impossible to identify any views about which Democritus and Leucippus disagreed. In Greek mythology Leucippus , son of Gorgophone and Perieres , was the father of Phoebe and Hilaeira Castor and Polydeuces abducted and married Phoebe and Hilaeira , the daughters of Leucippus. In return, Idas and Lynceus , nephews of Leucippus (or rival suitors), killed Castor. Polydeuces was granted immortality by Zeus, and further persuaded Zeus to share his gift with Castor. An introduction to materialism
A short definition
Materialism is a movement of thought about the nature of being which considers that there is no other substance but matter and that though and self-consciousness are secondary products of matter or illusions. Materialism rejects the existence of soul, of the next world and of God, being opposed to spiritualism and idealism.
The materialist philosophy is closely related to the development of science whose results improve its capacities to evolve and to structure itself in the course of centuries. Therefore, materialism covers several forms that go from atomism of the Greek philosophers to modern science. Its various trends are characterized by the way in which they conceive spirit, self-consciousness or mental entity.
Ancient Philosophy
The atomist philosophers thought that universe and matter are only made up of atoms, indivisible particles, assembled by chance and in a purely mechanical way. The founders of this theory was the Greek philosopher Leucippus and his disciple Democritus (around 460 - 370 BC). For them, the formation of world and life are explained by positions, movements, collisions and associations of these atoms that are the only reality. Soul is a kind of fire made up of atoms suspended in the air and that disintegrates at the time of death.
This theory based on the atoms was resumed one century later by Epicurus (341-270 BC) which made of it a monist and materialist description of reality, without finality or reference to a divine intervention. With the "clinamen" (spontaneous deviation of the atoms in their trajectory), form of mechanical freedom, he introduced a share of non-determinism to leave free will to man. The famous disciple of Epicurus, the Roman Lucretius (90-52 BC), largely developed the theory nuclear physicist in his poem "On the Nature of Things" (De Rerum Natura).

Leucippus
The Greek tradition regarded Leucippus as the founder of atomism in physics. Little is known about him, and his views are hard to distinguish from those of his associate Democritus. He is sometimes said to have been a student of Zeno of Elea, and to have devised the atomist philosophy in order to escape from the problems raised by Parmenides and his followers.
1. Life and Works
Leucippus is variously said to have been born in Elea, Abdera or Miletus (DK 67A1). His dates are unknown, other than that he lived during the fifth century BCE. Diogenes Laertius reports that he was a student of Parmenides' follower Zeno (DK 67A1). Zeno is best known for paradoxes suggesting that motion is impossible because a magnitude can be divided into an infinite number of parts, each of which must be traversed; the fact that atomism is thought to have been formulated in response to these arguments may account for the story that Leucippus was a student of Zeno. The extent of Leucippus' contribution to the developed atomist theory is unknown. Most reports refer to the views of Democritus alone, or to both atomists together; Epicurus seems even to have denied that there was a philosopher Leucippus (DK 67A2). Aristotle certainly ascribes the foundation of the atomist system to Leucippus. Leucippus is sometimes said to have been the author of a work called the

Wallace Provost, Philosopher, Anaxagorus, Leucipus.

ANAXAGORUS AND LEUCIPPUS
Anaxagorus was the first philosopher to visit Athens. Burnett described him as a Persian soldier from Klazomenai, a Greek city that had been conquered by the Persians. He was a teacher of Pericles, and a student of the school of Anaximenes. He was banished from Athens for saying that the sun was a red hot stone and that the moon was like earth. Anaxagorus began by trying to explain the world in a Milesian sense while respecting the conclusions of Parmenides. Empedokles had taught that everything in the world was made from four basic elements. Anaxagorus denied this possibility. He said that there was a little of everything in everything. Or else how could hair be made of what is not hair unless hair was part of it. All things are together, was the way he put it, and everything however small or great had an equal number of portions of the opposites. Matter is infinitely indivisible. No matter how small you may divide anything it still had the same number of opposites. However, everything gives the appearance of that which is most in it. Therefore air is that which has in it most cold, fire has in it most heat, and so on. LEUCIPPUS Of all of the followers of Parmenides by far the boldest was Leucippus who challenged the basic thesis of the masters philosophy, that what is not cannot be. When Pythagorus developed his theory of the one and the many, the many were separated by the void, or what is not. Parmenides rejected this idea. Leucippus revived it. Following the lead of Parmenides, Leucippus argued that what is must be one, but it is a plenum, he said, a plenum filled with an infinite number of bodies each of which meets all of the requirements of the one but are separated from all others by the void. These he called atoms. They were infinitely hard and indivisible, they came in a myriad shapes and sizes, and everything that exists is made up of them. This idea was further developed by Democritus and we will discuss him later because he was a contemporary of Plato, and like him a student of Socrates.
