Leucippus (450 - 370BC)
Greek philosopher who was most likely born in Adera. Almost nothing of his life is known and all of his writings have been lost. However, he is often considered one of the founding fathers, if not father, of the atomic theory that was later developed by Epicurus. His theory states that all matter is made up of identical indivisible particles called atoms.

Leucippus
Leucippus, fl. 5th century BC, was a Greek philosopher and the founder of atomism. He maintained that atoms and empty space are the ultimate realities. Atoms are imperceptible, individual particles that differ only in shape and position. The intermingling of these particles in space gives rise to the world of experience. Democritus developed and popularized the ideas of Leucippus. Robert M. Baird Last modified on: Friday, October 17, 1997.

Wrong! The idea of the atom was first introduced by Leucippus of Miletus around 450 B.C.. Leucippus and his pupil, Democritus, theorized that all matter was composed of atoms, or bits of matter too small to be seen. The word "atom" comes from a Greek word, "atomos", meaning uncuttable, because Leucippus believed that atoms were the building blocks of all materials and therefore could not be broken down any further. This article is about the philosopher. There was also a Greek mythological Leucippus (mythology)
Leucippus or Leukippos 5th century BC ) was the originator of atomism , the philosophical belief that everything is composed entirely of various imperishable, indivisible elements called atoms There are no existing writings which we can attribute to Leucippus, since his writings seem to have been enfolded into the work of his famous student Democritus q.v. for more on atomism). In fact, it is virtually impossible to identify any views about which Democritus and Leucippus disagreed. Leucippus was born at Miletus (or some said Elea, for his philosophy is associated with the Eleatic philosophers ), a contemporary of Zeno Empedocles and Anaxagoras of the Ionian school of philosophy. His fame was so completely overshadowed by that of Democritus, who systematized his views on atoms, that Epicurus doubted his very existence, according to

See Hegel's analysis and on Law of Sufficient Ground Leibniz is most renowned as co-founder of the calculus with Newton (Newton and Leibniz each invented different systems of notations for calculus independently; there was an intensely competitive relation between the two men who would set each other mathematical puzzles to see whose calculus was superior, and Newton faked the date of publication of the second edition of the Principia to claim priority) and founder of mathematical and symbolic logic. Leibniz also did important work in mechanics, geology, biology, history, linguistics and engineering. He was prominent in the public affairs of his day, putting a scheme for the unification of the German states, which had been the legacy of the Thirty Years War, to the Imperial Diet, argued for the reunification of the Protestant and Catholic Churches, founded the Academy of Sciences under Frederick I of Prussia, and participated in every sphere of science, art and public life in the Europe of the Habsburgs and Louis XIV.

Leucippus and Democritus Atoms (Leucippus and Democritus) Our senses suggest that matter is continuous. The air that surrounds us, for example, feels like a continuous fluid. (We do not feel bombarded by individual particles in the air.) The water we drink looks like a continuous fluid. (We can take a glass of water, divide it in halves, and repeat this process again and again, without appearing to reach the point at which it is impossible to divide it one more time.) Because our senses suggest that matter is continuous, it isn't surprising that the debate about the existence of atoms goes back as far as we can trace and continued well into this century. The first proponents of an atomic theory were the Greek philosophers Leucippus and Democritus who proposed the following model in the fifth century B.C. 1. Matter is composed of atoms separated by empty space through which the atoms move. 2. Atoms are solid, homogeneous, indivisible, and unchangeable. 3. All apparent changes in matter result from changes in the groupings of atoms. 4. There are different kinds of atoms that differ in size and shape.

Leucippus (fifth century BCE.)
Leucippus was the founder of Atomism. We know next to nothing about his life, and his book appears to have been incorporated in the collected works of Democritus. No writer subsequent to Theophrastos seems to have been able to distinguish his teaching from that of his more famous disciple. Indeed his very existence has been denied, though on wholly insufficient grounds. Aristotle gives a clear and intelligible account of the way Leucippus' theory arose. It originated from Parmenides' denial of the void, from which the impossibility of multiplicity and motion had been deduced. Leucippus supposed himself to have discovered a theory which would avoid this consequence. He admitted that there could be no motion if there was no void, and he inferred that it was wrong to identify the void with the non-existent. Leucippus was the first philosopher to affirm, with a full consciousness of what he was doing, the existence of empty space. The Pythagorean void had been more or less identified with 'air', but the void of Leucippus was really a vacuum. Besides space there was body, and to this Leucippus ascribed all the characteristics of Parmenides notion of the real. The assumption of empty space, however, made it possible to affirm that there was an infinite number of such reals, invisible because of their smallness, but each possessing all the marks of the Parmenidean One, and in particular each indivisible like it. These moved in the empty space, and their combinations can give rise to the things we perceive with the senses. Pluralism was at least stated in a logical and coherent way. Democritus compared the motions of the atoms of the soul to that of the particles in the sunbeam which dart hither and thither in all directions even when there is no wind, and we may fairly assume that he regarded the original motion of the other atoms in much the same way.

Leucippus and Democritus: atomist philosophers
1 October 2001 Scribes: Lukas Tagalakis and Jamieson Hunter These minutes were spoken on 3 October; for another version, go to the unspoken minutes Monday's lecture concentrated on the teachings of the early atomist philosophers Leucippus and Democritus. These philosophers, both from Abdera, are often mentioned together. Leucippus is believed to be the originator of Atomist thought, which Democritus, with much ambition, expanded and carried through in detail. Epicurus, a contemporary of Democritus, further expanded the atomic theory into a complex system. There exists one or two pieces of evidence that Epicuras denied that Leucippus even existed. However scholars, including professor Hutchinson, have enough evidence to suggest that he did exist and that he was crucial in the development of the atomic theory. Professor Hutchinson described these attacks by Epicurus as polemical in nature. A student asked what the word polemical meant and professor Hutchinson said that it is derived from the Greek word polemos

Who were Democritus and Leucippus? Democritus of Abdera, on the coast of Thrace, lived around 460-360 B.C. Together with his teacher Leucippus, he was the chief spokesman for the philosophy of atomism. Nothing of Leucippus’ work has survived, but fragments from Democritus’ work on metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics remain, as well as his collection of ethical maxims called The Gnomae. Gnomae are aphorisms dealing with serious ethical and philosophical issues. He had written sixty books originally. Leucippus was a pre-Socratic while Democritus was an older contemporary of Plato, whom he opposed. Democritus’ thought was expounded subsequently by Epicurus and Lucretius. Democritus saw a piece of lint floating in the sunlight one day and wondered why the lint did not fall directly to the floor as other objects normally did. He surmised that there must be invisible particles hitting against the lint, preventing it from falling straight to the floor. He called these invisible particles “atoms” and said that they must really exist. Other Pre-Socratic Greek Philosophers: Basic elemental stuff of the universe.

LIFE OF LEUCIPPUS
I. LEUCIPPOS was a native of Elea, but, as some say, of Abdera; and, as others report, of Melos. II. He was a pupil of Zeno. And his principal doctrines were, that all things were infinite, and were interchanged with one another; and that the universe was a vacuum, and full of bodies; also that the worlds were produced by bodies falling into the vacuum, and becoming entangled with one another; and that the nature of the stars originated in motion, according to their increase; also, that the sun is borne round in a greater circle around the moon; that the earth is carried on revolving round the centre: and that its figure resembles a drum; he was the first philosopher who spoke of atoms as principles. III. These are his doctrines in general; in particular detail, they are as follow: he says that the universe is infinite, as I have already mentioned; that of it, one part is a plenum, and the other a vacuum. He also says that the elements, and the worlds which are derived from them, are infinite, and are dissolved again into them; and that the worlds are produced in this manner: That many bodies, of various kinds and shapes, are borne by amputation from the infinite, into a vast vacuum; and then, they being collected together, produce one vortex; according to which they, dashing against one another, and whirling about in every direction, are separated in such a way that like attaches itself to like.
