Freitas E-Mail address not available 7 Jun 2004 It is June 7, 2004 and I am a 59 year old Vietnam era veteran (Army). For several years, I wore an MIA bracelet inscribed with Col. Leslie Hauer's name and date of loss. Durin gthe 1970s, I placed the bracelet in my jewelry box. From time to time I would take it out and think of him, unclear as to his fate. Recently, the Internet allowed me the opportunity to determine what had become of Col Hauer. I cried when I read his story and thought of his lonely fate in a hostile place. I am blessed to have survived that terrible era and in my heart hold great thanks for those who sacrificed themselves for me, my country and for those in a foreign nation who yearned to be free. I will try to find Col. Hauer's family, in the event they wish to have this bracelet. If not, it will hold a place of honor in my home and be passed to my daughter, lest we ever forget.

Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... L > John Leslie A B C D ... Z John Leslie Bishop of Ross, Scotland, born 29 September, 1527, died at Guirtenburg, near Brussels 30 May, 1596. He was of the ancient House of Leslie of Balquhain, but apparently illegitimate For favouring the project of Mary's marriage with the Duke of Norfolk, he was imprisoned by Elizabeth, first at Ely, and then in the Tower of London. During his absence from Scotland he was deprived of the revenues of his bishopric and was reduced to great poverty. Theiner prints an interesting letter addressed by him to the pope in 1580 showing the efforts he made, though absent from his diocese, to confirm those wavering in the faith, and recover those who had fallen away. Liberated in 1573, but banished from the country, he visited various European courts to plead the cause of his queen, and finally went to Rome. The Archbishop of Rouen appointed him his vicar-general in 1579. James VI restored the bishop, his mother's lifelong friend and champion, to his former dignities, but he never returned to Scotland. In letters he is principally remembered as the author of a Latin amount of the history of Scotland "De origine, moribus, ac rebus gestis Scotiae libri decem" (Rome, 1578), a Scottish version by Dom E.B. Cody, O.S.B. It comes down to 1571, and in its latter part presents a Catholic account of contemporary events.

His father, Robert Leslie, was a joiner and cabinet-maker with some knowledge of mathematics. John had an older brother Alexander who also studied mathematics and John learnt mathematics at home being taught partly by his father and partly by his older brother Alexander. He attended three local schools but his total school education still amounted to no more than a year before he began his university studies. Leslie entered the University of St Andrews in 1779 at the age of 13. At this time the Scottish Universities competed with the schools for the most able pupils so it is not surprising that he entered university at such a young age. The Regius Professor of Mathematics at St Andrews at the time was Nicholas Vilant, and Leslie studied under him and also under his assistant John West . Leslie's abilities were quickly noticed by the Principal of the University who arranged a scholarship to enable Leslie to continue his studies. It was assumed that once his education was complete that Leslie would join the Church, which was the main occupation for educated boys, and it was on these conditions that the Principal gave the scholarship.
