In Loving Memory Leslie (Les) John Hanawalt This page is dedicated to Larry's brother Les in his memory. Leslie had a wonderful carefree spirit, and was always willing to help anyone. He had a knack about him that kept family and friends in laughter most of the time with his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He would always "out pun" his siblings! He dressed as a clown many times to provide enjoyment to kids and adults, he was also pretty talented making anything you could imagine out of balloons! He enjoyed his "clown days", mainly because he knew he was helping people smile and have fun, and that was important to Les, he felt life was too short not to have fun and enjoy each day and moment you have here on earth. How right he was too! He truly looked out for others to ensure their happiness and safety, putting himself second. He was 37 when his life was shortened by a senseless Drunk Driver in California. He was born December 26, 1963 and was killed on June 23, 2001. Leslie attended La Sierra High School in Sacramento CA. We all miss his tender, loving, and carefree spirit each day of our lives. He's left us all with so many dear and precious memories, which we will all hold close to our hearts forever! He has a beautiful daughter Jamie, whom he loved very much and adored with all his heart and soul. Every time he would talk of Jamie, his face would just glow, and his eye's looked like twinkling stars.

Home Next JESUS LOVES YOU CONFESS YOUR SINS TO HIM MY TESTIMONY Dear Brother/Sister, Born in a Christian family, I had no problems in knowing who Lord Jesus Christ is. I accepted HIM as my personal savior when I was a boy of 13 years. It was a complete turn point in my life. This then is the message, which I have heard of HIM, of the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
This then is the message, which I have heard of HIM, and declare unto you. That God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
It is this Lord Jesus, our “Good shepherd", who manifests to us the name and nature of our Great living God.
It is right, then, that to this dark world the great God should be represented as pure and perfect light.
This then is what Jesus said...
John 6:37 "All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away."
John 14:11 "Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves."
John 15:16 "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruitfruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name."

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Leslie John Comrie 15 August 11 December ) was an astronomer and a pioneer in mechanical computation. He was born in Pukekohe (south of Auckland New Zealand , in 1893. During World War I he saw action in France with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and lost a leg in fighting. While convalescing he started using a mechanical calculator and went on to modifying commercial calculators for specific projects. He was the first director ( ) of the Computing Section of the British Astronomical Association , resigning to go to teach at Swarthmore College and Northwestern University in the USA where he pioneered the teaching of numerical analysis . He returned to England to join HM Nautical Almanac Office at the Royal Greenwich Observatory in In April his article On the Construction of Tables by Interpolation described the use of punch card equipment for interpolating tables of data, comparing this with the less efficient and more error-prone methods using mechanical calculators. Also in 1928, he was the first to use punch card equipment for scientific calculations, using

Astronomer and computer. Leslie John Comrie was born at Pukekohe on 15 August 1893. He gained his M.A. at Auckland University in 1916 with honours in Chemistry. In spite of the handicap of deafness, he served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the First World War and was wounded, with the loss of a leg. Forsaking chemistry, he followed an earlier interest in astronomy and computation, in which he was destined to become a master. Proceeding to St. John's College, Cambridge, as a research student, he was elected to an Isaac Newton Scholarship in 1920. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree in 1923 for a thesis on occultations of stars by planets. From Cambridge he proceeded to the United States, where he spent three years teaching astronomy and introducing computational science into the undergraduate course, first at Swarthmore College, and then at North-Western University, Evanston, Illinois. Appointed to His Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office in 1925, Comrie ultimately became its superintendent in 1930. In 1936 he left this position and founded in 1937 a private firm, Scientific Computing Service Ltd., London, which provided for the first time a general service for professional needs of high-volume calculation. During the Second World War this firm produced services with an accuracy and speed of which Comrie was justly proud. Ballistic, bombing, and geodetic tables were all compiled in effective fashion. In 1948 he made a complete tour of New Zealand, revisiting old friends and places. He died in London on 11 December 1950. He was a fellow both of the Royal Astronomical Society and of the Royal Society.

L.J. Comrie
Leslie J. Comrie, Ph.D, (1893-1950): astronomer and pioneer in mechanical computation, born in Pukekohe, New Zealand, and educated at Auckland University College, University College London, and Cambridge University, where he received a Ph.D. in astronomy [ Like his American contemporary, Columbia University Astronomy Professor Wallace Eckert , Comrie was a pioneer in the application of punched-card machinery to astronomical calculations and the production of astronomical and mathematical tables: the first scientific use of these machines, which had been designed purely for business use. Comrie pioneered the teaching of numerical analysis in 1923-25 at Swarthmore College and Northwestern University in the USA, and then joined His Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office in Greenwich. England, in 1926 the same year Eckert joined Columbia's Astronomy faculty. Comrie was Superintendent of the Almanac Office from 1930 to 1936 (where, when Comrie arrived in 1925, "the Nautical Almanac was computed by retired Cornish clergymen with long white beards, using dog-eared 7-figure logarithm tables" [Tee 1989]); Eckert was Director of the US Naval Observatory's Nautical Almanac Office from 1940 to 1945. Comrie was the first to turn punched-card equipment to scientific use: computation of astronomical tables by the method of finite differences, as envisioned by Babbage 100 years earlier for his Difference Engine, but not practical until the appearance of reliable calculating machines. Differencing was used because the
