Emile Lemoine As a civil engineer he rose to the rank of chief inspector and in that capacity he was responsible for the gas supply to Paris. He worked in the gas inspection service from 1886 until 1896. A symmedian of a triangle from vertex A is obtained by reflecting the median from A in the bisector of the angle A . He proved that the symmedians are concurrent, the point where they meet now being called the Lemoine point. Among other results on symmedians in Lemoine's 1873 paper is the result that the symmedian from the vertex A cuts the side BC of the triangle in the ratio of the squares of the sides AC and AB . He also proved that if parallels are drawn through the Lemoine point parallel to the three sides of the triangle then the six points lie on a circle, now called the Lemoine circle. Its centre is at the mid-point of the line joining the Lemoine point to the circumcentre of the triangle. These results are interesting but Lemoine's next venture failed to interest many mathematicians. He produced a classification of geometry according to five operations:-

Triangle Geometers
Euclid's Elements and other remnants from ancient Greek times contain theorems about triangles and descriptions of four triangle centers: centroid, incenter, circumcenter, and orthocenter. Later triangle geometers include Euler, Pascal, Ceva, and Feuerbach. In 1873, Emile Lemoine presented a paper "on a remarkable point of the triangle," now known as the Lemoine point or symmedian point. This paper, writes Nathan Altshiller Court ( College Geometry , page 304), "may be said to have laid the foundations...of the modern geometry of the triangle as a whole." Court also describes seminal papers by Henri Brocard and J. Neuberg and names Lemoine, Brocard, and Neuberg as the three co-founders of modern triangle geometry. An astonishing wave of interest and publications in triangle geometry swept through the last years of the 19th century and then collapsed during the early years of the 20th. However, many new gemstones in the fields of triangle geometry remained to be unearthed with new excavating tools, such as computers and methods from other areas of mathematics. All of this has led to the state of the art up to 1995, as described in Philip J. Davis

http://www.yorktaylors.free-online.co.uk/faguet.htm
In a dramatic review by M. Emile Faguet The author of le Détour and le Marché - namely M. Henri Bernstein - has just had a play performed by the Gymnase company, or rather it is a mixture of tragedy and vaudeville, which is perhaps not his Athalie or his Andromaque , his l'Amour veille or his les Sentiers de la vertue , but rather is more like his Nicomède , which is in no way, as you may perhaps have heard through hearsay, an entirely contemptible piece and is in no way the utter shame of the human spirit. So far does this piece reach, I do not say above the clouds, but in short has reached to the clouds, that there is a little exaggeration, but of a justifiable success, M. Bernstein's piece is swarming with improbabilities, but with a foundation of truth. It is in this that l'Affaire Lemoine differs from la Rafale , and, generally, from M. Bernstein's tragedies, as it does from a good half of Euripides's comedies, which swarm with truths, but are built on a foundation of improbabilities. Moreover it is the first time that one of M. Bernstein's pieces has interested people, who have avoided them up until now. Consequently, that swindler Lemoine, wishing to perpetrate a dupe with his claim of having discovered the means to manufacture diamonds, appealed... to the biggest owner of diamond mines in the world. As improbabilities go you will tell me that this is one of the greatest. And that's the first. At the very least you would think that this potentate, who has had his mind on the most important business affairs in the world, would send Lemoine packing, like the prophet Nehemia, who proclaimed from the walls of Jerusalem to those below who were offering him a ladder for him to come down:

~MARCEL PROUST~ Ephemera Site This is an informal site dedicated to publishing English translations of Marcel Proust's lesser known writings. Pieces and letters which, as far as I am aware, are not available in translation elsewhere. I am fully aware of my own limitations as a translator and these are certain to contain many errors, inaccuracies and misunderstandings. Please mail me with any constructive criticisms, corrections or improvements. I have tried to approach my translations in a similar spirit to Proust's during his period of Ruskin translation. One of Marcel Proust's friends (Georges de Lauris) once commented that he "would have been hard put to it even to order a lamb chop in a restaurant in English". That pretty much sums up my fluency in French, but armed with a few dictionaries, a French grammar and a boundless love and respect for Proust's writing I offer up my clumsy tribute to the great man. Since I first created these web pages volume 4 of Selected Letters has now been published. A small number of the letters here have now been included in Joanna Kilmartin's excellent translations, but the vast majority of the material below still remains untranslated elsewhere. Likewise Neugroschel's Short Stories. I will continue to add to these pages in the same spirit: this is a labour of love not of scholarship. Proust's Articles An attempt to list all of Proust's articles and miscellaneous writings.

32. Isogons
In Clark Kimberling s web page for emile Michel Hyacinthe lemoine we read {quote}Many of lemoine s contributions can be found in Nathan Altshiller Court,
http://www.pballew.net/isogon.html
Isogons and Isogonic Symmetry The word isogon has almost completely been replaced by the word equiangular. It describes a polygon with all angles congruent such as rectangles and the regular polygons . The word comes from the Greek isos for same, and gon for knee or corner.
Isogonic is  a related word that describes a type of symmetry between lines, passing through the vertex of an angle, and the angle bisector. In the figure Angle ABC is shown with its bisector BB'. The rays BX and BY are isogonal because they make the same angle with the angle Bisector. We often say that one is the isogonal reflection of the other, but it should be clear that if L2 is the isogonic reflection of L1, then L1 is the isogonic reflection for L2.   Two points on these rays, such as X and Y, are called isogonal points.  If three lines in a triangle are concurrent , then their isogonic lines are also concurrent.  In the figure the Red segments AA', BB', and CC' intersect at Point X.  The three blue rays are the isogonic lines for the three Red Segments, which are reflected about the angle bisectors (dashed rays).  Blue Rays intersect in a single point also, labled X'.  Points X and X' are called isogonal conjugates
One famous pair of isogonal conjugates is the orthocenter (intersection of the altitudes) and the circumcenter (center of the circle which circumscribes a triangle). If you draw any triangle and find these two points (lets call them P and Q), then draw the angle bisector from any vertex of the triangle (which we will call AX, you will see that the angles PAX and QAX are congruent.

HISTORICAL NOTES
Apollonius (c262-190 BC): Alexandrian geometer author of various books including the lost book on plane loci which is known from various commentators to have given the theorem about circles associated with the angle bisectors of a triangle. Bodenmiller (19th century re-discovered the theorem about the midpoints of diagonals of a quadrilateral now also ascribed to Gauss. Henri Brocard (1845-1922): discovered a number of properties associated with the points, triangles and circles now named after him. Giovanni Ceva (?1647-?1736): discovered theorems about points on the sides of a triangle (see glossary); the one for collinear points is now ascribed to the first century Alexandrian geometer, Menelaus. Leopold Crelle (1780-1855): engineer and editor of famous mathematical journal; he discovered various properties of triangles including the points now named after Brocard. He claimed that "it is wonderful that so simple a figure as the triangle is so inexhaustible". Euclid (c300 BC): author of the Elements the influential systematic account of geometry including many theorems about triangles. Leonhard Euler (1707-1783): prolific Swiss mathematician who established that certain special points of a triangle lay on a line - now named after him.

AUREA 'IMPERIALIS'
A short time afterwards Herr Max Leichtlin, of Baden-Baden, sent out a giant variety of
Crocosmia aurea, to which we (Victor and Emile Lemoine) gave the name of Crocosmia aurea 'Imperialis'. The spikes are twice as high as those of the type, and the flowers and the segments twice the size. Its colour is of a magnificent and brilliant orange-yellow. Herr Max Leichtlin is said to of obtained it by selection from several successive generations of seedlings. It is certain, however, that this plant does not come true from seed.
