Brief biography and summary of his works.
http://www.stetson.edu/~efriedma/periodictable/html/Nd.html
Adrien-Marie Legendre
From 1775 to 1780 he taught with Laplace at Ecole Militaire. He then decided to enter for the 1782 prize on projectiles offered by the Berlin Academy. His essay won the prize and launched Legendre on his research career, as he came to the notice of Lagrange, then Director of Mathematics at the Academy in Berlin. Over the next few years Legendre published work in a number of areas. In particular he published papers on celestial mechanics which contain the Legendre polynomials. He also published papers on number theory and the theory of elliptic functions. A 1785 paper on number theory contains a number of important results, such as the law of quadratic reciprocity for residues, and the results that every arithmetic series with the first term coprime to the common difference contains an infinite number of primes. In 1794, Legendre published , which was the leading elementary text on the topic for around 100 years. This text greatly rearranged and simplified many of the propositions from Euclid's Elements to create a more effective textbook.

Adrien-Marie Legendre would perhaps have disliked the fact that this article contains details of his life for Poisson wrote of him in [12]:- Our colleague has often expressed the desire that, in speaking of him, it would only be the matter of his works, which are, in fact, his entire life. From 1775 to 1780 he taught with Laplace d'Alembert . He then decided to enter for the 1782 prize on projectiles offered by the Berlin Academy . The actual task was stated as follows:- Determine the curve described by cannonballs and bombs, taking into consideration the resistance of the air; give rules for obtaining the ranges corresponding to different initial velocities and to different angles of projection. His essay won the prize and launched Legendre on his research career. In 1782 Lagrange was Director of Mathematics at the Academy in Berlin and this brought Legendre to his attention. He wrote to

Legendre, Adrien-Marie (1752-1833)

French mathematician who was a disciple of Euler and Lagrange . He published a classic work on geometry He also made significant contributions in differential equations calculus function theory, number theory (1797-98), and applied math. He expanded his three-volume treatise (1811-19) into another three volume work, (1825-32). Legendre reduced elliptic integrals to three standard forms, but their straightforward inversion by Abel and Jacobi rendered his work unnecessary. He invented the Legendre polynomials in 1784 while studying the attraction of spheroids His work was important for geodesy. In number theory he proved the unsolvability of Fermat's last theorem for n

In mathematics Legendre functions are solutions to Legendre's differential equation They are named after Adrien-Marie Legendre . This ordinary differential equation is frequently encountered in physics and other technical fields. In particular, it occurs when solving Laplace's equation (and related partial differential equations ) in spherical coordinates The Legendre differential equation may be solved using the standard power series x x = ± 1 provided n is a non-negative integer , i.e. n = 0, 1, 2,... . In this case, the solutions form a polynomial sequence of orthogonal polynomials called the Legendre polynomials Each Legendre polynomial P n x ) is an n th-degree polynomial. It may be expressed using Rodrigues' formula An important property of the Legendre polynomials is that they are orthogonal with respect to the L inner product x mn denotes the Kronecker delta , equal to 1 if m n and to otherwise). In fact, an alternative derivation of the Legendre polynomials is by carrying out the

Legendre, Adrien-Marie
French mathematician who was particularly interested in number theory, celestial mechanics, and elliptic functions.
In 1783-84 he introduced to celestial mechanics what are now known as Legendre polynomials. These are solutions to a second-order differential equation.
In number theory his most significant result was the law of reciprocity of quadratic residues (established more firmly by German mathematician Karl Gauss 1801) and the law of the distribution of prime numbers 1798.

Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio
