French mathematician who is best remembered for his work on number theory and elliptic integrals. Encyclopedia Legendre, Adrien Marie ¤drēăN m¤rē ləzh¤N drə ) , 1752–1833, French mathematician. He is noted especially for his work on the theory of numbers, on which he wrote an essay (1798) containing the law of quadratic reciprocity as well as several supplements, all later incorporated in a definitive work, Th©orie des nombres (1830). The results of his long study of elliptic integrals appeared in Trait© des fonctions elliptiques (3 vol., 1825–32). He invented independently of C. F. Gauss, and was the first to state in print (1806), the method of least squares, and he collaborated in drawing up centesimal trigonometric tables. He taught at the ‰cole militaire, Paris, and at the ‰cole normale and was associated with the bureau of longitudes from 1812. His ‰l©ments de g©om©trie (1794, tr. 1867) was an influential textbook.

During the Revolution, he was one of the three members of the council established to introduce the decimal system, and he was also a member of the commission appointed to determine the length of the meter, for which purpose the calculations, etc., connected with the arc of the meridian from Barcelona to Dunkirk were revised. He was also associated with G. C. F. M. Prony (1755-1839) in the formation of the great French tables of logarithms of numbers, sines, and tangents, and natural sines, called the Tables du Cadastre .
