Here is an extract from Fine Hall in its golden age: Remembrances of Princeton in the early fifties by Gian-Carlo Rota, a series of recollections of reknown mathematicians viewed with all their glorious mannerisms.
Solomon Lefschetz
No one who talked to Lefschetz failed to be struck by his rudeness. I met him one afternoon at tea, in the fall term of my first year at Princeton, in the Fine Hall common room. He asked me if I was a graduate student: after I answered in the negative, he turned his back and behaved as if I did not exist. In the spring term, he suddenly began to notice my presence. He even remembered my name, to my astonishment. At first, I felt flattered until (perhaps a year later) I realized that what he remembered was not me, but the fact that that I had an Italian name. He had the highest regard for the great Italian algebraic geometers, for Castelnuovo, Enriques, and Severi, who were slightly older than he was, and who were his equals in depth of thought as well as in sloppiness of argument. "You should have gone to school in Rome in the twenties. That was the Princeton of its time!" he told me. He was rude to everyone, even to the people who doled out funds in Washington and to mathematicians who were his equals. I recall, Lefschetz meeting Zariski, probably in 1957 (while Hironaka was already working on the proof of the resolution of singularities for algebraic varieties). After exchanging with Zariski warm and loud Jewish greetings (in Russian), he proceeded to proclaim loudly (in English) his skepticism on the possibility of resolving singularities for all algebraic varieties. "Ninety percent proved is zero percent proved!," he retorted to Zariski's protestations, as a conversation stopper. He had reacted similarly to several other previous attempts that he had to shoot down. Two years later he was proved wrong. However, he had the satisfaction of having been wrong only once.

History
The Lefschetz Center for Dynamical Systems is one of the leading groups in dynamical systems and control theory. It originated in 1964, when a large group of mathematicians and control theorists came to Brown from RIAS (the Research Institute for Advanced Studies) in Baltimore. The center was named in honor of Solomon Lefschetz, one of the outstanding mathematicians of this century. He was a very innovative and influential contributor to the theory of dynamical systems, the director of the mathematics group at RIAS before it moved to Brown and a continual source of support and inspiration. At Brown, the group was led for many years by Joseph P. LaSalle. Current members are from the Applied Mathematics Mathematics and Engineering Departments. The research topics of current interest are largely in dynamical systems, partial differential equations and stochastic control theory and applications.
Mission Statement
The Lefschetz Center for Dynamical Systems supports research in dynamical systems interpreted in its broadest sense as the study of evolving systems, including partial differential and functional equations, stochastic processes and finite-dimensional systems. It promotes research in this area at Brown University through the organizaton of activities that facilitate interactions between its members and other scientists, engineers and mathematicians. New initiatives for making connections to other areas of science are developed and students are trained with a broad perspective on the mathematics and applications of dynamical systems.

Brown University
Brown University , founded in 1764, is the seventh oldest institution of higher learning in America and one of the major universities in the nation. With an enrollment of 5,600 undergraduates and 1,300 graduate students it combines a university's emphasis on scholarship and research with a college's commitment to education and attention to the individual student. Brown awards degrees in virtually all areas of the humanities, the physical, biological and social sciences, mathematics and computer science. The Division of Applied Mathematics is one of the most prominent departments of the University, and one of the oldest and strongest of its type in the country.
Origin Of The Division Of Applied Mathematics
The Division had its origin in a program of Advanced Instruction and Research in Mechanics, established in the summer of 1941 on the recommendation of a committee of the National Research Council. The Council was concerned with the lack of applied mathematicians in the country and its effect on the war effort. R. G. D. Richardson, Dean of the Graduate School and Secretary of the American Mathematical Society , succeeded in having the program established at Brown, partly due to the eminence of its Mathematics Department. A large part of the European scientific community had left Europe by then, and the time was ripe for establishing a substantial program in the United States. Dean Richardson arranged for the noted German applied mathematician William Prager to come to Brown to lead the program. About 30 students attended in the first year, 1941, and enrollment rose to about 120 one year later. The roster of visiting faculty during the war years reads like a Who's Who of American mathematical science of that time. On the recommendation of a committee appointed by Brown's President Henry M. Wriston, and including Theodore von Karman, Marston Morse and Warren Weaver, the very successful program became the Graduate Division of Applied Mathematics in 1946, and a formal Ph.D. program was established. Undergraduate programs leading to the Sc.B. and to the A.B. were added in the 1950s.

Individuals are listed in the form (Name / Place of PhD / Date of PhD). I traced it by hand back to 1954 but through the genius of the Theory of Computation Ph.D. Genealogy Database and The TCS Genealogy I was able to go back to 1856. Very nice. Things get really interesting because Franz Neumann was influenced by Euler and Kirchhoff was one of his students. Also, Carl Neumann was a friend of Ludwig Otto Hesse and studied Riemann surfaces." The University of Chicago Memorial from Volume 3, #1 , of TopCom Samuel Eilenberg, who made decisive contributions to topology and other areas of mathematics, died on Friday, Feb. 6 in New York City. He had been a leading member of the department of mathematics at Columbia University since 1947. His mathematical books, ideas and papers had a major influence. Eilenberg was born in Poland in 1914. At the University of Warsaw he was a student of Borsuk in the active school of Polish Topology. His thesis, concerned with the topology of the plane, was published in Fundamenta Mathematica in 1936. Its results were well received both in Poland and in the USA. In 1938 he published there another influential paper on the action of the fundamental group on the higher homotopy groups of a space. Algebra was not foreign to his topology! Early in 1939 Sammy's father told him "ammy, it doesn't look good here in Poland, Get out." He did, arriving in New York on April 23, 1939, and going at once to Princeton. At that University, Oswald Veblen and Solomon Lefschetz efficiently welcomed refugee mathematicians and found them suitable positions at American Universities. Sammy's work in topology was well known, so a position for him was found at the University of Michigan. There Ray Wilder had an active group of Topologists, including Norman Steenrod, then a recent Princeton Ph.D. Sammy immediately fitted in, did collaborative research (for example, with Wilder, O.G. Harrold and Dean Montgomery). His 1940 paper in the Annals formulated and codified the ideas of the "obstructions" recently introduced by Hassler Whitney. He also argued with Lefschetz. Finding the Lefschetz book obscure in its treatment of singular homology he provided an elegant and definitive treatment in the Annals (1949).
