Happy birthday Walter
Professor Walter Ledermann (pictured) will be the guest of honour at a one-day conference on Monday 19 March to celebrate his 90th birthday. Walter, who came to Sussex in 1962 as one of five founding members of the School of Physical Sciences, was Professor of Mathematics from 1965 until his retirement in 1978. According to Professor James Hirschfeld, who is organising the event, Walter was "widely reckoned to be one of our best lecturers" and he continued to give revision classes for first and second years until last year. Two eminent mathematicians of algebra - Peter Neumann from the University of Oxford and Martin Liebeck from Imperial College - will speak on finite groups. The lectures will take place in Pevensey 1A7 and are open to all. The day also includes a buffet lunch (with speeches from Walter and the Dean of SMS, Professor Charles Goldie). See www.maths.sussex.ac.uk for booking details. For any other enquiries, contact James Hirschfeld on jwph@susx.ac.uk

PDF (71 K) Permissions Randomized trial of four vs. seven days of ceftriaxone treatment for bacterial meningitis in children with rapid initial recovery.
Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal. 19(3):219-222, March 2000.
ROINE, IRMELI MD, PhD; LEDERMANN, WALTER MD; FONCEA, LUZ MARIA MD; BANFI, ANTONIO MD; COHEN, JACOB MD; PELTOLA, HEIKKI MD, PhD Abstract:
Background. Seven days or more of antimicrobial treatment is the standard for bacterial meningitis, although third generation cephalosporins are usually able to sterilize cerebrospinal fluid within 24 h. The limited experience from shorter regimens in children is encouraging, and we hypothesized that in rapidly recovering patients older than 3 months of age it would pose no risk for adverse outcome. Methods. Strict clinical and laboratory criteria were used to define rapid initial recovery, in which case ceftriaxone therapy was either stopped after 4 days (4 injections) in children born on even dates (N = 53) or continued for 7 days in patients born on odd dates (N = 47). Outcomes were compared on Day 7 of hospitalization and at 1 to 3 months after discharge. Results. On Day 7 no differences (P > 0.05 for each criteria) were observed between the 4-day and the 7-day groups regarding fever, clinical signs or serum C-reactive protein concentration. At the follow-up visit 1 to 3 months after discharge the 4-day group had fewer sequelae than the 7-day group (0%vs. 5% neurologic sequelae, P = 0.39 and 3%vs. 9% hearing loss, P = 0.49, respectively). One child in the 4-day group who had fully recovered was subsequently readmitted 53 days after the first hospitalization with recurrent Haemophilus influenzae meningitis.

    William Edge
Professor W. L. Edge, mathematician, died on September 27 aged 92. He was born on November 8, 1904. William Edge was one of the last survivors of the great Cambridge school of geometry founded by H. F. Baker in the earlier part of this century. It reached its high point in the 1920s, and included P. du Val, W. V. D. Hodge, T. G. Room, J. G. Semple, J. A. Todd and H. S. M. Coxeter (who still thrives). William Leonard Edge was educated at Stockport Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge, from which he went to Edinburgh University in 1932. He was to remain there for the rest of his academic career, retiring in 1975. Travelling did not appeal to him, although he did attend the conference in Toronto in 1979 celebrating Coxeter's 75th birthday. He also regularly returned to Trinity, and was even persuaded to travel to the University of Sussex on two occasions. He published 91 research articles and one book, Ruled Surfaces , between 1932 and 1994. His writing style was always polished and the argument in every paper is traced with absolute clarity. Unusually among mathematicians, every work is his alone. He would perhaps have been surprised to know that his later works are referred to in other mathematical works more than his earlier ones. His early work was entirely in algebraic geometry, and especially algebraic surfaces in "ordinary" space. He devoted many papers to careful exegesis of families of quadrics, that is, surfaces of degree two. In 1953 he published his first paper in finite geometry, bringing all his experience of complex geometry to bear on the elucidation of finite spaces. Such geometries now have many applications in such areas as the theory of error-correcting codes.

An Interview with Thomas J. Laffey
Professor Laffey, please tell us about your formative years. How did you go into Mathematics, and what are your recollections of your university studies? You went on to study with Ledermann for your doctorate.
Thomas J. Laffey I already had a Masters degree from UCG, so when I went to Sussex in September 1966, I was not required to do any further coursework, and I immediately began research. In the book by Curtis and Reiner entitled "Representation theory of finite groups and associative algebras", I was greatly impressed by Jordan's Theorem which states that there is a function J defined on the natural numbers with the property that if G is a finite subgroup of the group GL(n, C ) of invertible n x C C What did you do after you obtained your PhD? How did your research interests evolve over the years? You have been heavily involved in mathematical competition activities. What are your thoughts and experience concerning Mathematical Olympiads for the young? Can you give us a short overview of the Irish university system?
