Who discovered all the planets?
Most of the planets have been known about since ancient times. Only three have acually been "discovered." Uranus was discovered accidentally in 1781 by William and Caroline Herschel. People had seen it many times before, but had just thought it was a star. Neptune was mathematically predicted by John Couch Adams and Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier. You see, Uranus had been discovered 60 years before this time. According to the math equations, the orbit of Uranus was a little bit off. Based on this, Adams and Le Verrier figured there must be another planet which was affecting the orbit of Uranus. They calculated where it should be, then asked an astronomer to check. Neptune was discovered in 1846, almost exactly where it was predicted to be. Clyde Tombaugh found Pluto in 1930 by taking lots of pictures of the solar system. He looked for anything that moved with respect to the stars, and found Pluto.

http://www.bun.kyoto-u.ac.jp/phisci/Gallery/leverrier_note.html
Urbain Leverrier (1811-1877) French astronomer who predicted the existence of the planet Neptune, from the discrepancy between the theoretical orbit and the observed data of Uranus. He was educated at the Ecole Polytechnique, and began to teach astronomy there in 1837. Arago, then the director of the Paris Observatory, was impressed by Leverrier's ability, and Leverrier was to spend most of his time at the Paris Observatory. It was Arago who suggested Leverrier to work on the problems of Mercury and Uranus. As regards Uranus, Leverrier's work achieved a most dramatic success, leading to the discovery of the new planet Neptune, as was already mentioned. Although Adams (British astronomer) was independently working on the same problem, Leverrier was more fortunate in that his prediction was confirmed by Galle (German astronomer), in 1846. This incident was regarded by many people as one of the most impressive successes of the Newtonian astronomy (called celestial mechanics), since Leverrier's prediction was made by means of only "a pen and calculations". Leverrier eventually succeeded Arago's position, the director of the Paris Observatory, in 1854. Then he noticed the problem of the perihelion of Mercury. But this time, his speculation (postulating another planet inside of Mercury's orbit) was not successful; this problem was evetually solved by Einstein's general relativity in 1915 (see

http://www.who2.com/urbainjeanjosephleverrier.html
URBAIN JEAN JOSEPH LEVERRIER Mathematician Astronomer Urbain Jean Joseph Leverrier was a French astronomer and mathematician who analyzed the orbit of Uranus and accurately predicted the existence of another planet nearby. His prediction led directly to the discovery of Neptune in 1846. An English astronomer, John Couch Adams, calculated the same thing independently and earlier, but Leverrier's work was published first. Leverrier is credited with coming up with the idea of daily weather reporting, and he also tried to prove the existence of another planet, Vulcan, near Mercury.
Other famous astronomers include Omar Khayyam Johannes Kepler and Tycho Brahe

In considering the perturbations of Uranus , Leverrier made calculations indicating the presence of an unknown planet in an orbit outside that of Uranus. At the time, this was considered the crowning achievement of mathematical astronomy. The same conclusion had been reached by John Couch Adams a little earlier but had not been published, so Leverrier was initially given sole credit for the discovery of Neptune, which was actually first observed, as a result of Leverrier's instructions, by Johann Galle in 1846. After much controversy both Adams and Leverrier were honored as responsible for the planet's discovery. In 1854, Leverrier became director of the Paris Observatory.
