Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier
Astronomer died Paris, France, . He was successively professor at the Ecole Polytechnique, the College Stanislas, and the University of Paris. In 1839 he published a calculation of the planetary orbits from 100,000 B.C. to A.D. 100,000, proving the stability of the solar system, but his great triumph was his theoretical calculation of the exact spot where the hitherto undiscovered planet Neptune was to be found, as was done under his direction by Galle at Berlin, 23 September 1846. He also suggested the existence of a planet between Mercury and the sun. Between 1858 and 1877 he compiled most valuable tables of the movements of the solar system. In 1853 he succeeded Arago as director of the Paris Observatory. He founded the International Meteorological Institute, and organized the French weather bureau service. He was a fervent Catholic and did not hesitate to condemn publicly the materialistic and sceptical tendencies of so many modern scholars.

Urbain Le Verrier
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Urbain Le Verrier. Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier March 11 September 23 ) was a French mathematician who specialized in celestial mechanics . He worked at the Paris Observatory for most of his life. He was born in Saint-L´ , France. His most famous achievement is the discovery of Neptune , using only mathematics and astronomical observations. Encouraged by Arago , he performed calculations to explain discrepancies between Uranus 's observed orbit and that predicted from the laws of Kepler and Newton . At the same time, but unknown to each other, the same calculations were made by Adams . Le Verrier assisted Galle in locating the planet (September ); which was found within 1° of its predicted location at a point in Aquarius . (There was, and to some extent still is, some controversy over the apportionment of credit for the discovery; see Discovery of Neptune Perhaps galvanized by his discovery, Le Verrier proceeded to interpret the orbit of

Le Verrier, Urbain Jean Joseph
French astronomer who predicted the existence and position of the planet Neptune, discovered in 1846.
Unbeknown to Leverrier, English astronomer John Couch Adams had carried out virtually identical calculations a year earlier, but had failed to persuade anyone to act on them.
After his discovery of Neptune, Leverrier compile a comprehensive analysis of the masses and orbits of the planets of the Solar System. This was published after his death, in the Annals of the Paris Observatory.
Leverrier was also instrumental in the establishment of a meteorological network across continental Europe.

Adams, John Couch
English astronomer and mathematician. At the age of 24, Adams was the first person to predict the position of a planetary mass beyond Uranus . After Johann Gottfried Galle confirmed the existence of Neptune based on independent calculations done by Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier , the two became embroiled in a dispute over priority.

Barnard, Edward Emerson
American astronomer. Barnard discovered Jupiter 's satellite Amalthea and Barnard's star, the second-nearest star system to the Sun.
Bode, Johann
German astronomer. He is known for the bogus "Bode's Law" which attempts to explain the sizes of the planetary orbits.
Bond, William Cranch
American astronomer. One of the earliest American astronomers of note, Bond rose from poverty and overcame a lack of formal education to become the first director of the Harvard College Observatory. At the observatory, he studied Saturn and (with William Lassell ) discovered its moon Hyperion
