Le gouvernement de Louis-Philippe, soucieux de bénéficier de la popularité du savant, demanda à celui-ci un plan pour la recherche astronomique. Ce plan, déposé en février 1847, décrit assez précisément le propre plan de travail de Le Verrier, qui d'ailleurs sera effectivement mené à bien en trois décennies, et il suppose presque explicitement que son auteur se trouve placé à la tête de l'Observatoire ! Cette ambition, qui se heurtait à l'autorité d'Arago, membre du gouvernement provisoire en 1848, ne fut pas immédiatement satisfaite; mais, s'étant rallié avec zèle au Second Empire, Le Verrier, qui fut nommé sénateur dès janvier 1852, fit naturellement partie de la commission officielle qui, à la mort d'Arago, devait se pencher sur la réorganisation de l'Observatoire de Paris. Sa proposition de séparer l'Observatoire du Bureau des longitudes fut entérinée par décret, le 30 janvier 1854; le lendemain, Le Verrier en fut enfin nommé directeur, avec les pouvoirs étendus qu'il souhaitait et avec les augmentations de traitement qu'il demandait. Mais bientôt, son caractère autoritaire, ses façons hautaines, les vexations continuelles qu'il imposait au personnel placé sous ses ordres, les suspensions arbitraires de traitement, et le renvoi d'astronomes installés par Arago lui aliénèrent la sympathie des astronomes, lassés de cette dictature, et finirent par attirer l'attention du gouvernement. Une commission fut désignée pour enquêter, la polémique gagna la place publique et, lorsqu'en janvier 1870 quatorze astronomes de l'Observatoire démissionnèrent collectivement, le ministère fut amené à intervenir en relevant Le Verrier de ses fonctions. Urbain Le Verrier Cool! Le Verrier theorized that there was a second asteroid belt in our solar system. He believed the second belt was between the Sun and Mercury. We now know that this second belt does not exist. In 1854, Le Verrier became director of the Observatory of Paris. At the time, this observatory was in decay. Le Verrier reestablished the observatory as a place where good science was taking place. He often used very tough measures at the observatory. As a consequence, a storm of protest led to his removal as director in 1870. He was reinstated as director in 1873. Urbain Le Verrier died in Paris in 1877.
